what are diffuser marbles used for? and what are their purpose?

essentially what the diffuser marbles are are little glass marbles, with holes going throught them, the theory behind it is that the smoke will pass through the marbles, which also have water around them, makeing the bubbles of smoke small and thus eassier to cool down, the marble make more bubbles, and more cold surface area, and make it take longer for the smoke to raise cooling it more, that is the theory behind it. Now for the ghetto rig, regular glass marbles, will basically do the same thing, just was them first in alcohol, or acetone to remove any surface applications, and becareful adding the marbles, they can get moving fast, and being made of glass can shatter your downstem/diffuser in your bong, best to add them sideways, with the smallest incline you can get them to roll down at. hope that helps.
