Can't help with the wiring thingy...but, I have read that most DIGITAL ballasts don't operate well off a generator. You need magnetic ballasts.
Hope that helps some.

First off you need to determine tha ampacity of the gen, then derate that by atleast 80% so if your gen is rated at 50 amps = you could safely run at 40 amps. This is actually pretty complex depending on the style and model of the gen. Is the gen 120 or 240? 240 is half the amps of 120 so it would look like this ( 50/25 amps) so that would be 50 amps @ 120 or 25 amps @ 240. It also depends on the plugs. Everything is rated in voltage and amps. Does the gen have breakers or is it a lug style. For 4 1000 lights if the voltage is 120 1000w / 120v = 8.3 amps or 1000w/240v = 4.16. So for 4 1000w lights you would need 33.2 amps at 120 or 16.6 at 240, how big is your Ac lets say its 14000 btu then you are looking at an additional 1500 w or close or 12.5 amps @ 120. Always make sure that all circuits are protected with the proper size breaker and the correct wire size. So you would take the power from gen to timer line side, then load side (lights). I would actually buy a bigger gen so that it would only be running at or below half the rated load of the gen. hope this helps
