Do I wait until 20% of ALL the trichs are amber or 20% of each trich.

You got about 2-3 weeks left. 3 weeks for 50% amber. Some pics with some white lights would help.

If you can achieve couch lock highs by waiting for amber trichomes. What's the value when breeders claim that certain strains give you couch lock highs and heady highs, etc?
can I grow an indica strain and have a heady high by harvesting when the trichomes are cloudy?

From what I have gathered the trich's are for telling THC, if you wait to long the THC will be kaput. Mix of amber and cloudy- THC optimal for using (highest levels) All cloudy- more like 75%. Clear- 50% or less.
As far as strains go my personal experience is this: I can be growing the dankest stickiest plant ever but if I do not harvest at the right time it can make all the difference in how the plant effects me. Of course how you grow it does alot too. The potential of the strain is probably what the breeder is talking about, THC production and what not.
I'm not an expert this is just what I think.

They like words like CouchLock and Heady cause it sells the strain. Genetics play a big part in the type of stone you are going to get, but you can dial it in a little more to your liking by varying the time you pick it, early or late. Most growers when they are first learning how to grow a strain will pick samples all the way through the last 3 weeks of harvest to see which stone suits them best.

I can understand that. But how can you get correct samples through the last 3 weeks of harvest when it takes weeks to properly cure?
I have only grown one type of plant and it was one that someone else tried so I had guidance of when to harvest. But I thought indica=body, sativa=head? Is that all bullshit too?

You can still cure them. You just take samples at different weeks. Then four your next grow with that strain, you will know which week yeilded the type of high you were looking for. It's usually not to see if your current crop is ready, because smoking uncured bud would make every sample taste like crap.

Well to get an exact comparison, and still have the same curing time. Wouldn't you need to start some plants a few weeks off from each other?
I don't think you can get a correct evaluation of the bud if the curing time is not equal as well....

The reason for taking samples is to determine the type of high. Sure you cant cure it properly because that would take to long. what you do is quick dry a small nug in the oven on low for a while and then smoke it in a day or two. when you smoke you will be able to tell what kind of high it is head/couch lock and harvest accordingly :stoned:
