little worm...big holes in stems

there is a little worm like critter that bores into the stem and eats its way to the top. the "frass" this worm leaves smells musty and i am sure would affect the taste. what is this little nasty called and what will kill or prevent it from returning. they start out kinda green and as they eat and grow, turn a coral color. HELP!!!

i get caterpillars in sept and theyre in the middle of the buds eating stems then buds die, well if so get ready to pick them out thetll destroy a crop in days
