First CFL Grow (Help Appreciated) Pics Included

Well after reading for months, I decided that the CFL Method would probally be the easier and Cheapest way to go. My Setup as is Follow

4 - 26w CFLs
1 - 62w CFL
180w @ 12000- 12500 Lumens
1:1 Ration or Cool to Warm

I have Most of the lighting no more than 8 inches away from the New Plant.
The seed is just from a Good sack that i purchased from a good man. Nothing like WHITE widow or anything crazy but good High high Mid Bud.
Its in a Gun Case(L=3ft W=2ft H= 6ft) with glass sliding doors and it has no roof in It. Might i also mention its in a closet where the doors need to be closed.(Parental Issues.)
It is on a 24/7 Light Schedule. I water 1 8oz glass bottles water about every 2- 3 days. The soil is sumthing my mom had on the Garden Spost to feed plants for 3 months. I will post the exact print tomarrow. Just was wondering about water , If i have enough Lighting for my Grow, and How bad will the Smell be. I am Currently Growing 1 Plant. Praying for Female. This is day 5 from sprout.

Any Tips Or Suggestions on Lighting water or nutrients or Anything Please feel Free To Suggest.Also should i increse the Lights to get a bigger yield and do CFL have to power to produce a nice Yield.

Picked up another 62w CFL bringing the total Watts to almost 250 with Around 16K Lumens. On a Single Plant. Do you guys think that this is be sufficent?

just from looking, your square footage looks pretty small. 5000+ lumens/ sq. foot is in the optimal growth range, so i'd say you're set. make sure you vent that and get temps down, as seedlings i've killed seedlings at 85 degrees.

I put a ceiling in on the cab used sum wire to hang a board with a strip. I got those adapters that use a light socket on 1 side and a plugin on the other. I have been trying to do sumthign about ventilation hopefully ill figure sumthing out..

I believe if you would have gotten a 250w HPS you would be getting a better lumen/watt ratio but then you would have a temperature problem to deal with

Hopefully ill have HPS by the time i bud. But doubt it. Really going the cheap way. Have only spent 10 dollars so far on this grow. I know my yield will suck if i just use warm cfls for budding. But sum bud for free is better than paying for it. I just got 2 PC fans hooked up to 9v DC chargers. I doubt this will be enough, Maybe i can do 2 intake 2 exhaust should be ok. My grow space is small. She looks ok just on occasion sum droopy leaves, but seems to go away then re appear

looking like you're getting things going. always improve what you can. are those fans all exhausting out, or do you have some doing intake? if one is blowing out and one blowing in, switch the intake to exhaust. just make sure all your fans for air EXCHANGE are exhausting. pick up a small (4-6") fan for RECIRCULATING the air. you want negative pressure in there.

as a side note, check this pic for an idea of what my CFL fixtures look like. Total cost for EVERYTHING was about $40.00

gG ~Nice im deff gonna try that lightining situation. as for my fans the 2together are blowing fresh air in an that fan on the top is blowing out of the box. Should i make them all exhaust or what. i only have 3 fans for right now i am planning on makin 2 intake and 2 exhaust at the top. think this will be good?

well basically, i'd said no fans for intake. you want as much suction as you can get. with fans blowing in AND out, you create positive pressure. you want negative pressure. if i were you, i'd switch all fans to exhaust on top. if you can and that cabinet is yours (or no one cares about it), i'd cover the holes from the 2 doing intake now, and create a passive intake (no fan, just a hole) at the lowest possible point in the box. cold air sinks and all. you should already be seeing temps drop but that should really help. if i can ever help you with instructions and a parts list for that light setup i use, just ask!

ok the cab is my g/f's so i can only fuck the cealing and that 1 saide where the 2 fans are. Ok so im gonna leave those two holes there then cut 2 more holes on the top and use all exhaust. so would be 3 fans venting out of the top of the cab. Now should i put the 4-6' fan in the cab or on top of it blowing all the exhausted air out of the closet.

it would be best for them to be on top but the side might work ok. the 4-6" fan is just to have some gentle breeze blowing across the plants. this will help circulate the co2 evenly and a gentle breeze will make the main stem and side shoots stronger and able to support heavier buds. :) you only need enough of a breeze inside for the leaves to barely flutter.

Yeh once they see the plant almost to bud they might as well let it bud instead of throwing it away. They smoke and the economy is fucked up plus we are broke with no weed like we used to. ill just use the excuse.. i was trying to save us money :-D, and look i even used energy saving bulbs!

Swish- not a problem. wish i knew this site when i was starting up. but i count my blessing. got my ebb/flow hydro system for free from my brother-in-law, clones from a friend and the lighting was cheap. as far as those side shoots go, i wouldn't worry yet, but if it continues, i look into any possible nute deficiencies. after i finish typing this i'll do a quick look for any posts on that and put a link in here for ya.

YGB - thank you. i used to use 2 4' fluoros on either side but it got in the way of my bushy bastards and was causing algae build-up in my reservoir (still haven't light-proofed it :( ) my current plan is to get some 2' fluoros for either side. for now though yes, all light comes from above. the wattage is: 6 26W cool white and 6 23W warm white. parts list or instructions? just ask.

oh yeah. the 23W are 1600 lumens apiece and the 26W are 1750 lumens. grand total = 20100 lumens in a 4.5 sq. foot area. not great not horrible.

shit crazy ass night. went to the casino won sum money. only 100 but hey sumthin i only came with 20. So i left the fan on and my pops was all up in ym shit. Luckily i had it locked but they where like wtf are the fans for. So i just told my dad bought the shit. he didn't say kill it and he said just let it grow for now till i think about it. so maybe this will be good if i don't have to hide, maybe i can get a better grow space in the basement or the attic :thumbsup:

i'm happy for you! hopefully pops sees the light and allows it to continue. seriously though, show him what you know about cultivating and constantly remind him (and your ma) that this is personal use only growing, and you are VERY concerned about keeping it on the DL. i think if he knew that you knew what you were doing and weren't gonna go on a huge scale, he'd be cool. little story: i was 8 years old looking for my dad before he left for work. looked everywhere, couldn't find him. wanted to borrow money for a comic book. finally found him in his bedroom at the computer desk with the monitor off, and his head down. got super worried and asked what he was doing. he said (greatest parents ever) "rolling some doobies for the drive home after work." i didn't know what that was and he explained it to me as best he could and told me that if/when i decided to try it, to try it with him. i did when i was 13, and haven't looked back. to this day i grow or find it for them. i am blessed.

The grow continues. I bought sum mylar.I think. I looked for an emergency blanket. I found one for 1.99. On the package it says Aluminized Emergency blanket. Nothign about mylar tho. Looks pretty reflective. I turned all fans to exhaust and i put a small 3.5 inch 12v DC fan from the store in there for air circ. Ill update pics soon

naw i'd stick to passive intakes. wasn't the inside of that cabinet white? if it was, you're probably not getting much more reflective-ness (is that a word?) with that blanket.
mylar - 95% reflective
flat white paint - ~90% reflective
aluminum foil - ~50% relective

i don't know if i'd keep that in there. maybe just get some flat white spray paint (assuming the white in there is glossy white) and get mom and dad involved with a little painting day. :)

the wall in the back was glass with a white wall behind it i coved that wil sum of the blanket. Another wall was brown i covered that. 1 wall is white i left what. then i covered 1 of the sliding glass doors. im just gonna try to get more powerful fans. see how that works. sry for shit pics the good camera is fucked but. hope shit stays good thx for help

yeah fans are the answer if you want to keep that. i'd pick up one of the 6" inline duct fans from lowe's or home depot. got mine at menards for $35. 250CFM. lemme see if i can find a link... there we go.

if you broke off the actual top of the plant, you "topped" it. now growth will slow for a bit but you'll now have two colas (main tops). this is a good thing. you can continue to top the main colas and end up with probably 4-8.

K im bout to move the operation to the garage. My 22nd birthday is coming up so might have people over, so i dont want them to see this. This is pics to my soon to be Grow Box. Might i add its much bigger! The dimensions are 6Ft High x 4Ft Length x 2Ft Width. I added 2x's 3inch PVC for "Passive:" intake. On left and right bottom

**Now is PAssive intake NO FANS suckin In? On the Top i plan to "Get" a inline exhaust fan but if not i am gonna cut 4 holes with 4 CPU fans for Exhaust.

no, that leaf curl isn't normal. i'd check the plant problems area on the forums. maybe start a new thread and fill out the troubleshooting form. love the grow box! now as for the freezing temps, i'd pick up some reflective insulation. its like bubblewrap covered in a mylar-like film. you can see it in my pic of my lights. that with a small space heater should keep it good. yes passive intake is no fans in, all fans out. and yes the pvc pipe will need a sharper angle. keep it up, sorry for not posting for a while.

I did sum looking on the curling. Sumone says it is in genetics. Thx for all your help. Here is a few updates on the plants. Seem to look okay. I can notice new shoots all over the plant. The spot where i topped is growing back with 2 more shoots. Anyways ill get another pvc and angle that more. And i will be looking for mylar insulation. Also Do u think that if i use regular insulation and staple that Mylar blanket that will be the same? And im thinking of adding another 100-150 watts of cfls once i move to the Garage. Also i seen 4ft Flouro reflectors and ballast at habitat for humanity with bulbs in them for only 9.99. Should i Probally pick 2 of theese up?

the improper pH won't help the plant, thats for sure. since you're in soil, i'd get a mid-range pH tester at any aquarium/fish store (maybe even wal-mart). i got mine at a local fish shop for 7 bucks. good for 200+ tests. stay away from the test strips as even touching them with bare skin can cause deviations of true readouts. the kit i bought has a little vial that you fill to the 5mL mark and add 2 drops of test solution. shake it up, and read the color against the chart provided. there are some ways to adjust pH without buying the "pH up/pH down" stuff. research the boards here and you'll find them, but i'd reccomend getting the real deal.
the mylar emergency blanket might be perfect. they are engineered to keep heat in, so why not?
those 4' fluoros might be worth a look, but i tried 2 of them of either side of my current grow and since removing them (about 2.5 months ago), i've noticed no decrease in growth. couldn't hurt though. all depends on how high your folks will let the electric bill creep up. :jointsmile:

fat leaves, stocky plant usually = sativa
thinner leaves, taller plant = indica
just so you know, sativas usually require a longer flower time.

swisha the Ph kit is like $7 its made by general hydroponics, comes with a little vial and small bottle of test solution, like GG said I have it work good,
for cheap nutes I don't know what kinda stores you avail but the alaska brand is cheap its what i started with veg&bloom like $12 bottle ea. gallon i have seen like quart size for $7 at a ace hardware thats enough if you can find it. if you can spend a little bit more like $45 bucks I highly recomend using the fox farm grow big$15/tiger bloom$15/big bloom$15 as its not too much more.the FF comes in quart size bottles sometimes you can find them in a 3pack for a little less. do you have a hydro store near you?
oh yea amost for got they look hungry might start nutes soon 1/4 strenght what do they say the 5th node I ferget you can if makes easier get the FF nutes seperate you'll have too get the grow big and big bloom rite away can wait on the tiger for flower stage it says too start feeding 2 week in FF nute schedule.

let us know if you get that 150watt HPS seems kinda hard to believe its only $20 fixture ballast and bulb . lol if you don't get it you can use 3000k CFL's

Hell yeah thx for The Info Man. In fact i have been talking to sumone who purchased that 20$ HPS 150 Lamp. It DID In Fact include The Bulb BALLAST and 3way power cord for ez hook to an extension cord or wall cord. I will diffidently try to get this b4 Flowering. But if not that's cheap enough for CFL's.
As for the Plant "She looks good" today has got to be close to a month or so of Veg. Still on 18/6 Light. Anyone Know how much longer till Sex? Im not too worried about it. Its LST and all i Did was wait for the 4th node of leaves to start then i put a screw in my pot. the i just used twisty ties on the plant and used fish line to tie the twisty's down. As for "topping" it was accidental but beneficial. all you do is cut the top upcomming leaves. Look up "Growing Marijuana Topping" in google and "growing Marijuana LST" thats where i learned all my stuff. Pays to do research =D

preflowers could start soon. keep an eye out and make sure you're familiar with what male and female preflowers look like. or you could temporarily put them in flower to sex them. either way, looking good & good luck!

Have you considered trying to open the middle of the plant up to more light by tying its branches down. I did this with some super silver haze a few years ago and had nice buds almost down to the base.

I just let mine go for a few days then water it. I Left mine on 24/7 for first 1 1/2 weeks now i am on 18/6 and i think the Plant likes it more. I wouldnt dump a bunch of water on it might plop it over :mad:

I know veg needs more N then P but would this be sufficient enough?, or should i try to go look else where. I tried walmart today but they had nothing all of the summer stuff is gone. If you plan to flower with CFL...I will go with that so I planned myself up.

6 x 42 watts 2700k cfl per plants in a really small closet with white walls

putting 2 at the top, 1 each side and 2 pointing up on the floor. HPS is costly for me right now.

Are your veg. lights 6500k?

If you plan to flower with CFL...I will go with that so I planned myself up.

6 x 42 watts 2700k cfl per plants in a really small closet with white walls

putting 2 at the top, 1 each side and 2 pointing up on the floor. HPS is costly for me right now.

Are your veg. lights 6500k?

2 are 6500k my two 65w are 4100k and i have one 3000k

the soil i am using is
Miricle Grow Potting Soil w/ Continious Feed plant food. N-0.21%,P-0.07%,K-0.19% - Do u think i should still add the rose fert or hold off on them. I am deffentily gonna get sum money for the flowering. The weed i got to smoke sum for free so no $$$ out of my pocket. I rather put $ into growing it and smoking it for free :D:D:D

1)Yes first sign of soil penetration was on 10/4/08 Check the date on my girst log i think it was 3 days old or sumthing.

2) I topped once on accident on first LST Attempt. I have "tried" to supercrop(ill post pic later today), it slowed alot and now it has 2 new fucked up shoots coming. Other than that i just tied down anything that was growing faster than the rest. and to keep it a bush not a giant.

3)hmm. I say moderate. I have 4 26w and 1 13w on the top of it Pretty close to the top. I have 2 65w on each side of the plant. So i suppose its decent. I think ima gonna purchase the 20$ HPS 150w Lamp on Tuesday and Use that plus the 2 65W for flowering.

Well today as you can see. where i LST'd yesterday The Plant was on a 90 Degree Facing the Wall and now the Tops have Went back Straight and are now growing upwards again. Sumone Suggested i started Flowering Soon. Think this would be good or should i wait a Few more weeks. Im hopeing for a female and a Decent Harvest. Yeh i Have a 5ft Limitation. Once i get in the garage ill grow and veg till 2 month and flower. GG84 said my plant would double in size in flowering Stage. Got 5 feet in height for growing space too. I think 3 feet plants at 2-3 months will be good to start flowering them for 2 months at least....so 4-5 months total.

Is there a problem with height? plants are 3" tall (from soil to tip of top leaf) and 5" in diameter (across top leaves) and are 9-10 days old..I think they'll be asa bushy as an old russian woman... but in height I don't know!

Yeah it will if it gets too bad. The testers are not very expensive, you can get them at any garden surplus store, and probably most hardware stores. not to mention on the net. Basically what you want to do to fix it is adjust the pH of your water so it is right in the 6.5 - 7 range, then water generously ONLY when the top layer of soil is bone dry. If you wake up one day and the whole plant is drooping, just water it asap and by the end of the day it should be good. :smokin:

1/8 - $15-$20(4.5g w/o bag)

Damn, one thing is bothering me...the stems of my plants are at a 45 degree like angle while the leaves are leveled...And the roots are not contributing to the fact that the whole plant is shaky...even loose...but they have plenty of space to grow and last watering was sunday. I've checked the moisture and they have like only 1 inch deep dry soil. 1 is worse than the other...but 5 days ago it was the other that was worse (I'll call them with ther names...the oldest, 11 days old, is Anetta Keys and the youngest, 10 days old, is Peachez.)

So at the beginning Anetta Keys had a rough start. Thought it was a mold at like 2 days old...pulles on the little white thingy with hairs...WAS ITS ROOT!!...damn push it down the soil and it was like ho my god what did i do what did i do!!! And when i transplanted it, soil crumbled everywhere, almost dropped the whole thing... But now it's healthy as a nurse!

For Peachez everything went like a charm, babyhood to transplant everything...but now it's as fragile as an octogenarian. Leaves are wonderful, stem is bigger than Anetta Keys, but if I touch it, roots are not helping it to restrain the force...the stem is hard but under it its like soft...I dont know how to explain it...It's like it is not planted HARD in the soil...it's all loose...I've tried pushing on the soil around it near the stem but...

Is it normal at this age?

This is my first grow of Anything.. I read as much as my brain can, even my mom is helping me.

(I called her 2-3 times to know some stuff) (Told her I was growing hot pepper) (Yeah....hot pepper...) (Her jaw will drop to the basement when she'll sees them!!)(At least, she's not coming over every sunday!..)


PS: I don't even smoke anymore....3 years without it! (maybe couple of puffs here and there but nothing kronic as before)

My gurl was like that at a young age. I just kept pushing down the soil by the root stem. I help that helps you. This is my First Grow also. I have much to learn but, once u get pics up ill be happy. I cant wait to see your ladies. As well as i cant wait for my plant to sex. If she's a lady like she's spost to be then i will continue the log for awhile. My plants did bad at first. They looked shitty alot o times, i just listen to what PPL say and try to make the best of it. So far w/o any nutes or special shit. I have come up with my plant. Only spent 10 bucks so far. Sigh.... My dark cycle is from 9pm to 9am. I just moved the light up 3 inches. I turned the light on this morning and went back to sleep. I woke up to the leaves crammed in the lights. A little advise, you should try to figure out when the plant need water and water it a little bit before the look droopy, as this may cause some stress and slow down the growing pace. You are lucky that you don't have any signs of deficiencies, maybe you're soil is rich in nutriments... But, eventually it will start to get hungry, better get ready to give it some "food". But don't misunderstand me the plant look great and you're doing a great job! :thumbsup:

Yes I have LST'd and I tried supercropping on 1 cola. I learned alof of stuff from GoldedGraham84. I really just let the plant do her thing.

Will it be too late to make clones. Or should i just reveg after bud and take clones when i am revegging and keep this as the mother. Once summer rolls around i can use the closet in my room for mother/clones and the outside garage for Flowering.

Okay. Today i transplanted. If people arent spost to get mad at this stage well then i failed. Miserably. Anyways Got er done. She is no longer tied down. I have another 2ft of vertical space so that is not a problem. I already feel better about this new pot. its WAY bigger than my last 1. I looked for male parts today. None i can see. I hope not. She looks Beautiful. So muc more Lively after i gave here feet a little more to move. Today is Flower Day 18. Im hopeing to be done by Day 75. She grows more everyday. SO MANY pistils. Now i have no idea even how a plant buds but guess i will answer my own question as this progress progresses!

basically, wherever you see pistils, it's gonna be a bud site. as flowering progresses, the buds grow bigger, and towards to top of the plant, they expand into eachother, forming a single (kinda) bud. this isn't as common on lower branches.

I did, and have been following. I just didn't know if he had updated his bulbs for flowering or stayed the same.

I switched all my Bulbs to Warm CFL. I have only 1 blue CFL in there. I have (2 65w) (2 42w) (3 26W) (3 13w) Total 331w on a Single Plant. I am gonna work on gettin more still.

Damn.... just broke a 20$ 65w CFL bulb....................... Ty weedman for the stress loosener. I am under CFL's yo. 2700-3200K I got about 10- im gonna add about 4 more 42 or 26w's. Gay i had to break a 65w! so much better then a dumb ass 13w -_- w/e

hey man, nice job for your first grow. in answer to your question, each
calyx with it's pair of pistils is a single flower. buds are made up of clusters
of flowers. you'll see each bud site continue to swell and add pistils to the
growing clusters.

also, as a CFL'er myself, i no longer use those 65watt bulbs, they're
too expensive and too hot, plus, all the light is too concentrated in
one spot. instead, i use 3 x 23watt bulbs for a total of 69watts which
spreads the heat and the light more evenly throughout the grow space
and gives me the ability to tweak the spectrums of light, plus, you can
find 3 packs of the 23watt bulbs, all day long, for about $5.00 - $6.00.

oh yeah, did you're parents figure out you're growing? i hope they're ok
with it. lol, myself, i have to hide it from my kids.
