Computer fan question

I got this cpu fan free from work. Its from a large electrical circuit panel. Its got a metal casing and fan blade and its heavier than any other cpu fan I've seen so it seems to be "heavy duty" I guess you could say. It says 230v and 50/60Hz. My question is how much power does it need to operate at max cfm? 12v? Thanks for any info!!:jointsmile:

I dunno, I just didnt want to blow the motor on it. I'll try wiring it to be able to plug it in to the 110v wall outlet tomorrow.

if that doesn't work why not try to hook up a power supply then the fan directly off one of the wires coming out the power supply..just an idea:hippy:

yeah, somewhere on the fan it will tell u what are the power requirements

u r better off using a power supply, for running 1 single fan u can find PSUs as cheap as 20 bucks or maybe even cheaper online. or just salvage one from an old computer case.

or u can find the power requirements and use a matching 3rd party adapter u may have laying around the house to hook it up directly to the wall outlet.

just dont connect it to the plug without proper power managment! that will ruin your freebie and make a bad smell!

I talked to guy at the local computer store and he said it takes just 12v. I think I'm just going to get a 12v ac adapter that you would use for a cell phone charger. I think those are inexpensive. Not sure yet. Thanks guys for the help :)

the guy at the computer store is confused as to what you have ... you have a 230-volt fan, it's useless to you ... a website named 'coolerguys' sells computer fans, either 12v or 110 volt ... you can buy a powerful (100cfm+) 110-volt computer fan for about $15, some are less than that ... be simpler, and I've run one of those for a couple yes, still like new ... :thumbsup:

Absolutely, if its not rated for that voltage, be cautious as to which wires you stick where....

It seems you're on a really low budget on this grow. NO worries about that i'm on a less than 50 dollar budget on my grow and it's doing fine with floros. It seriously cant be that expensive to buy a little fan to use i mean a power supply fan isn't gonna push hardly any hair at all and probably make almost no difference. You dont have to have a huge fan but i'm sure u can find some little 5 dollar fan or something at dollar general or something of that nature.:rastabanna:

Thanks Nick, but im not on that low of a budget. Its just for a small cabinet for clones, nothing major. Thanks for the info tho :thumbsup:

I talked to an electrician where I work, and he said it would be 230v input to run it. He said 110v should move it pretty good though. It explains why 12v wouldnt even move it.
