cut the top when they are between 2 and 3 foot.
you just have to cut the last leaves, the ones that are still growing from the top of the steam

If you're just wanting to flower the plant before it gets tall which is what it sounds like you're talking about, then just go to a 12/12 light cycle. ;)
Topping the plant isn't going to make it flower any faster, it will help keep it short and will make it bushier. You mention a short growing season are you growing inside or out? If you're growing outside you're at the mercy of Nature and the days is gettin longer.
Are you wanting to keep them short for stealth?

you could train the plant to grow more horizontal. a little angling of the pot (assuming you're in soil) and a slight bend and you can get em to grow a few inches above the floor by tying and training. works great outside growing in the dirt too...it's sort of a modified scrog without the screen (which would also work well for you...got any chicken wire handy?)
nothing you can do to speed up flowering time...they are what they are. clones in a hydro system is probably the fastest way to go about it.
good luck
btw...do not top just before beginning 12/12. top early so the individual tops will be mature and ready to grow flowers. as far as training, it's easy and you'll quickly get the hang of it. keep a roll of duct tape close by just in case. makes for a quick fix for those times when training gets a bit rough...

I don't really agree with topping the plant, you're cutting off the main growing shoot.. granted, the energy is distributed between the other colas.. but put it this way, if you had scrawny arms.. would you decapitate yourself to get buff? keep the main cola at all costs,
Nosehit nailed it, during the flowering stage your plant grows about 30-40% of it's original size (meaning from when you put it into 12/12)
So if you want 2 foot plants that will yield about an ounce of dried smoke.. put them into 12/12 when you think they're tall enough... about 1.5 feet?
LST is a great way of training the plant to grow a certain way, it opens up the lower branches so that the colas can get alot more light...and you still keep the main cola ;)
i did this to my plant, as some of you know... and it work extremely well..
Enjoy, Bob.

if i top, it's at the 3rd or 4th node in the seedling stage. the plant recovers fully with no comparable size diff next to an untopped. i would never top during veg...especially one as mature as a 2-3 footer. i've got pics of last summer's grow somewhere around here showing the early pinch and running along about 18" off the ground for 7' (hw). it was a 1.2 pounder...
i should have made it clearer in the 1st post...

Howdy del,
I'm curious,why would you never top a 2-3 footer ?
Also,I take it,that you believe that when you top a plant, that top should be what's cloned..do you then sex them ..or do you do that first, before topping ?
Also, have you ever tried the FIM technique ?
Also..off the subject..I read your want ad for a roomate, and I must say-it's somewhat tempting..I'm a retired/disabled feller, who should be on mmj..but I'm in Texas and you know what that means-no mmj yet. Is the offer for couples ? I don't reckon that you'd want an old, redneck hippy and a liberal Jewish gal, living there anyhow...lol.
Have a good one !! :D

What worked for me when i grew my plant is i got to about 2ft 4in i had it on 18 hours light 6 hours dark then i forced it to flower by changeing it to a 12 hours light 12 hours dark so ya thats what i did and i got about an Oz and a half not much but it was good.

put a fan blowing on the plant...from my experience in my first grow LST+fan=short plant ,big bush, lots of growing buds :)

here is a haze ready to flower. the yellow dots are tops, the ones circled in red are the result of FIM topping, in this case I got 4 new tops instead of 3 like I usualy get. the rest are plain tops, I think i topped a couple again. the white line is the main stalk tied horizontaly. the cartoon pic is for a better explanation. hope this helped you a little.

ok, well, right now they are inside, just a couple weeks old, they have just recently begun to smell, i am going to put them outside asap, so if i understand this right, by tying and training them to grow horizontally, i will get a shorter plant, more tops, and more tops means more buds right? yes i do need some stealth, but my main goal is to get as much smoke as possible in a short outside season, and as for topping and cloning, you mean cutting the tops off and planting them right?

cloning is a little bit of science but not much, put your plants outside and bend them down, all the buds along the stem will change direction and head for the sun, turns one crown bud into many all along the plant, train over a few days so you dont snap. i usually dont tip (top) same same, when they are to big as this makes a plant top heavy and liable to snap when flowering.
Cloning- do this before flowering stage as you have to sacrifice a bud and has to be done from the top for best results as this is were the growth hormone is. Get scissors, heat to sterilise, cut tip with at least 2 sets of leaves (nodes) from tip sight, take and cut the bottom set of leaf's from the base of stem under water, this fucks of all the air giving virile free environment, dip in cloning solution, (the more expensive the better) slide into grow wool and place in a closed attrium or humidity container with light (no roots must get water from leaves, needs 80% humidity) water with very weak fertiliser until roots grow out of wool -plant. (wash rinse repeat)

ok, well im not into all that yet, i just want to grow a decent harvest in a short outside season, and bob, my plants are just a few inches tall, they have the first two sets of leaves grown, and the next is coming in, they are in plastic cups and i have tied a thred from the cup around the plant and to the cup again, and put enough tension on it where it is at an angle, i added more soil around the bottom of the stem and pressed it a lttle so it would hold, the leaves have turned up, your plant has multiple tops, and that means more buds right?, what i want to know is, will that mean it will take longer to harvest time?

i usually move seedlings into the growing pot asap as you dont want to have to disturb them later by re-potting. When you tip a plant at a young age the thing literally turns one central growing stem into two so you have to tie down both of these new central branches as they develop. I dont think it extends the flowering time and if it does it is worth it anyway.
