too late to plant?

Forgive me if this question is stupid, but I have no experience or knowledge of growing. I just wanted to know if it was too late in the year to plant. I live in northeast north carolina. I've thought about growing before, but never had a place for it, but recently I just thought of a couple perfect places to plant. So, what will happen if I plant now? Will it produce anything smokeable, despite its quality? Will it die? Will it be okay? Any information is appreciated as I have no idea what will happen at all.

too late, your plants would begin to flower right as it starts getting into winter. too cold.
