It's part of a particle smasher. They are going to fire protons into each other near the speed of light and see what happens. Maybe nothing. Maybe they will find the Higgs Boson particle. Maybe they will kill us all!
Here are some more impressive pics.

Good news and bad news.
Bad news:
Its going to open a giant vortex to another dimension and the whole world is going to get sucked into it.
Good news:
There will be free weed for everyone.

I think it will be MORE interesting if they don't find the Higgs
That means we need to do a re-think

I think it will be more interesting if they create a mini black hole and warp themselves to another part of space. :stoned:
Or maybe in a parallel universe. We actually don't really know a lot about black holes. I just hope they don't "make" one !

They already did. I watched the documentary "The Mist".lol:jointsmile:

let's hope they create a self sustaining black hole with enough power to pull in faster-than-light particles and ultimately end up collapsing the entire solar system...
that'll teach y'all damned scientists to mess with physics!

haha sorry, i was responding to something one of the (in my honest opinion dumbassed) "scientists" said in the video lol
uhh...
maybe this thing will liquify all solid matter, turning liquids into the equivelants of solids now, gases, into the equivelant of current liquids and gases... uh into light? i dunno im just BSing at this point lol

that will be like the most unexpected and preventable thing in current world affairs!

I think it would be MOST interesting if it works exactly as expected and the research leads to huge breakthroughs in quantum physics.
Stop laughing, it could happen! :D

Considering that there are not going to be any collisions until October I would be most surprised if they formed a black hole tomorrow.

As a physicist, i should be excited about this new LHC, but i dont give it a damn anymore... what if they find the higgs boson? What will it change in my life, or yours, or everybodys else, for this matter? The only who will profit with this will be the few scientists that work there, which probably will win some nobel or something like this... but for us all, the world will keep being exactly the same, with higgs or without higgs.
I dont think they will create a black hole, but even if it happened, it would evaporate instantly, so we dont need worry about it.
And the LHC energy is not enough to enter "other dimensions" and things like this... But even if it were possible, still it would be completly useless. If they need a machine with dozens of miles to "open a door to another dimensions" with the size of a subatomic particle, how great should be the machine for make this "door" large enough for having any practical use?
Im pretty sure the world would be far more benefited if they take the money they wasted to make this enormous thing and used to fight the hunger, the poverty, and such...

LOL touche!
It really isn't that dangerous though, really.
honest... (ducks for cover come October)
Hawking has a bet for $100 that they won't find the Higgs - and I agree.
@Coelho: We could end world hunger and poverty tomorrow, it just needs the political will to do it and that (shamefully) doesn't exist. This is still important research imho but it has also been very expensive - it shouldn't be an either/or thing. We have the money and means to do both :)

But the first collisions are not set until October iirc
To be honest though there are more 'energetic collisions' happening in my pants

One of the doomsday scenarios involving this said that it would take about 4 years for the artificially created black hole or quasar or whateverthefuck would have enough energy to begin really destroying the world.
right on time for 2012.
maybe as it's eating up the planet, the extra gravity will pull in a meteor or comet too. We can go out with an extra helluva bang. or maybe it'll be the moon that will be reunited with the earth.
4 more years of peace on earth. party all you can.

um, this is really disturbing... i rather die not knowing its coming my way or i will suffer day and night b4 i eventually become "nothing"
but i also think if such a think happens it will happen in a split second and guess what? the rest of our solar system will join us in there as well!
u know what, im gonna get me a G first order of business in the mornin, all this crap and the shitty hurricane coming my way... i dont wann die regretting why i didnt enjoy my last days when i could get some bud
1.5 years break is most likely gonna get a brief break till i find out if im gonna die or not within the next couple of months... then i will suspend smokin again if i was alive

^ this (http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/) is not the stuff that "ends the world"... that is happening subtly before our eyes. ;)
Any unlikely black holes that are formed will be so tiny and vanish almost instantly. You simply cannot artificially create the sort of scale of a black hole that would be cause for alarm. There's just not enough room for a massive star to collapse within this planet. Real estate is way too expensive! :D

I have heard some intersting stories, about this whole thing, such as another colider has been in exzistance for some time now, and it is in the US some where. Also the one collider is actulay a twin of another one built some where elese. But some of these stories are right outta star treck or the twilight zone, either way some one needs to make movies about these stories. Not all the black hole stuff, but the interesting stories that I think are made up but some crditiable people say they are true and they happend, and some say we unknowingly open up another pandoras box, but I would just like to see these stories on the big screen.

I thought they had already smashed a few protons to make sure the thing moves them...I read in Popular Science that what they're doing right now is finishing construction on the ATLAS monitoring systems...
