Smith County Man Busted for Growing 71 Pot Plants

For one Smith County man, the street cost of marijuana apparently led him to grow his own to smoke, but police say there are two problems ?? it??s illegal and 71 plants are a little hard to explain as being for ??personal use.?

Smith County Sheriff??s Sgt. Randy Meadows said 55-year-old John Daniel Miller III was arrested Monday and charged with felony possession of marijuana and may see his charges enhanced as the drug is weighed.

??The narcotics officer got a tip about a possible marijuana grow out on County Road 1111 in the western part of the county. So, she and another deputy went to do what we call a knock and talk,? he said.

Meadows said when the deputies pulled up the driveway, it was evident there was illegal activity going on because at least five marijuana plants circled with old tires lined the drive.

Meadows said the deputies could only guess the tires may have been used to keep Miller from accidentally running over the plants with a lawn mower or cutting them down with a weed whacker.

Meadows said once the deputies had visual confirmation there was marijuana being grown at the location, they asked Miller for consent to search the rest of his property and were amazed when he said OK.

??He said he knew we were coming sooner or later so he was expecting us,? he said.

When the deputies looked in an enclosed area behind the house, they found neat little rows of plants growing like corn.

They found additional leafy substances in the home that were drying, but they did not find scales or indications that Miller was selling any of the marijuana.

??He told us that this was all for his own personal use and he began growing it because it is just too high to buy on the streets,? Meadows said.

Deputies estimate that the haul was worth just under $100,000.

Miller remains incarcerated in the Smith County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

While the bust was not close to some of the larger busts in Smith County history, one deputy said that, due to the fact it was for personal use, that meant there was a ??whole lot of smoking going on.?

I hope he doesn't get charged with intent to sell, but you would assume that with that many plants they would tack that one on.

Poor guy, he should have been just tad stealthier though. :wtf:

It sounds like he didn't really care. Was tired of all the babysitting and decided to just smoke up and say screw it.

Don't blame the police for doing their job, enforcing the law. Blame the legislators and this individual. Even if it was for personal use, he was growing too many for anyone to believe that. He was growing in his driveway? Good one stealth..

"Meadows said when the deputies pulled up the driveway, it was evident there was illegal activity going on because at least five marijuana plants circled with old tires lined the drive."

for whatever reason he was growing these stuff, this is clearly the stupidest move u can pull by putting something illegal in plain heck public view outdoors on or near your grow property, thats like come pick me up to police

He had 71 plants just growing out in the open.

Sorry, I don't feel sorry for him. 71 plants is excessive for personal use. Especially considering you can grow at least 2oz per plant under a 400 watt bulb and this guy was using the sun so he was sure to probably get much larger plants (if he was growing correctly)

71 plants at 2oz a piece is 142 oz. which is nearly 9lbs. How the hell could you smoke that much weed in between harvests? I'm sure it's possible but there's got to be a lot of hand outs, baked goods... etc etc.

I'm sorry even though he didn't have a scale his story is shady. Either that or this guy is really friggin stupid. Either way he makes the rest of us look bad.

This dude does not look healthy...look at his face. My guess is that there was some seriously heavy usage of something besides cannabis in his past. His brain may be a bit fried. He found something that worked for him and he ran with it- an "outlaw" MMJ user. Poor guy, he's just a few years ahead of what, I believe, will soon be reality in California.

Job protection for MMJ users is a signature away from reality in California. Once that happens, more folks will be open about cannabis! I know I sure will be! If it is vetoed, it will be on the ballot soon enough. There are too many MMJ users for it not to pass. For job security ALL of us will make it to the polls! :rastasmoke::pimp::hippy::jointsmile::smokin::ston ed::rasta::hippy:

Once people see that (a) Cannabis users are their better neighbors. (b) It has a LOT of medical uses. (c) You can get high with no hangover. (d) Usually people don't get belligerent when high. (e) Stoned, even celery sticks taste GREAT! If you watch what you eat, it can be a diet aid! (f) You can grow your own, easily! (g) To find it, isn't that hard!

Any idea the legal system had of maintaining any kind of limits will vanish with the ripple effect from the Rick Simpson method (which, if it works even 1 out of 10 times, will be enough to make it an accepted "folk remedy"). It requires a 5 gallon bucketful of cannabis. How many plants is that? It may not be just about cancer...maybe MS and a lot more- here's a thread about the oil-

Other people are attacking medical prohibition in legal challenges. Rev. Carl Olsen, my friend who goes by peanutbutter, over at IC among many others.

The recent federal judge's ruling against the DEA is another good sign.

Hemp as a fiber crop with many uses, is being looked at.

The seed oil has an almost perfect balance in the Omegas (click the link - see Nutrition). The oil is great cosmetically (It's all I use).

The seed is good food for man or beast, period!

You can make fuel from it.

The "Ganja Genie" is out of the bottle. :D How soon this comes is up to us all. Now, contact you local politicians and tell them (politely ;) ) what you think!

Why? That guy could be the clone of the worst neighbor I ever had- alcoholic, noisy and, on occasion, violent. Dang, I would of loved to have seen him happily puttering around all all day with his 72 plants, instead of getting drunk and being a total ass! My world, back then, would have been a much more pleasant, and safer, place.

when I'm typing - hunt and peck, all the way! lol Also I think a lot about what I say and I hate the 10 minute edit limit!

There should have been and "and between Carl Olsen and peanutbutter- they are two different people- now good online friends! :D

And, yes, he did toke, once in a blue moon, but booze was legal, cheaper and easier to get. :( Everyone, even dudes like him, deserves a little "Cannabis and Compassion" (like "tea and sympathy" only much better" ;) )

Look at that guy. Would you want him as your neighbor? And if he was, what would you want him using? Just going by that dude's looks, I would have been happy to see the plants, and not whiskey bottles, all over the yard! Is that dude smart? Obviously, no. Is he even "all there"? Doesn't really look like it, but I don't know him. Sick, treating something? He's 55, he should look better than that- so, possible. Less likely to be violent if stoned to the max 24/7? Very likely! :stoned:
