CAIRO, Egypt - A 27-year-old Egyptian woman gave birth to septuplets early Saturday in the coastal city of Alexandria, family members and the hospital director said.

Ghazala Khamis was in good condition after having a blood transfusion during her Caesarean section due to bleeding, said Emad Darwish, director of the El-Shatbi Hospital where she gave birth.

The newborns, four boys and three girls, weigh between 3.2 pounds and 6.17 pounds and are in stable condition, Darwish said. They have been placed in incubators in four different hospitals that have special premature baby units, he said.

"This is a very rare pregnancy â?? something I have never witnessed over my past 33 years in this profession," Darwish told The Associated Press by phone from the hospital.

Darwish decided to carry out the Caesarean section at the end of Khamis' eighth month of pregnancy due to the pressure on her kidneys. He said Khamis, who already has three daughters, took fertility drugs in an effort to have a son.

Khamis, the wife of a farmer in the northern Egyptian province of Beheira, was admitted to the hospital two months earlier, Darwish said.

"From the initial checkup, I say that none of the babies have any sort of deformities or incomplete organs," Darwish said.

The woman's brother, Khamis Khamis, said even though his sister was trying to conceive more children so she could have a son, the family was astonished when they found out she would give birth to multiple babies.

"We thought about an abortion, but then we felt it's religiously forbidden. So we said 'Let God's will prevail,'" he told the AP by phone.

Egypt's health minister announced that the seven babies will receive free milk and diapers for two years, the brother added.

Well... imagine to carry seven babies inside your belly during eight entire months... wouldnt it be a heroic act?
And if she had gave birth by normal means (not by caesarian), THAT really would be heroic...
Im a man, so i (fortunately) wont understand rightly what it means, but im sure most women will do... and agree.

It's not even natural. If somebody takes sports-enhancing drugs to win an event, they are disqualified. She took fertility drugs because she had three daughters previously and wanted a son.

Having multiple children is just bringing more misery into the world. But hey, if it makes her happy, fuck everyone else - that's the attitude of people that breed like cockroaches.

Man... im not saying that she is a heroine because she gave birth to seven children that will indeed be more people to overcrowd the already overcrowded world... nor im saying that she is a heroine because of the great number of children she produced. I agree completly with your points.

Im only saying she is a heroine because of the great disconfort she must have endured during his pregnancy... and even more because of all the pain she will have to pass through to raise all this children... one crying baby at late night is bad... but seven crying babies at late night is simply a nightmare! I shudder even to think... poor lady...

OK, OK, I got you! I think she should have terminated the pregnancy, but if she had any brains to begin with she wouldn't have taken fertility drugs to conceive a fourth child.

Foul play, ehh! Sounds like a fair statement! lol! I've had thots of this over the years, fooling the body.

I bcan just hear byrdgirl now; just wait until they are teenagers!!

I frankly believe, it is like having puppies! I love them, the more the better. But, they have too many, especially at once. I always thot, if it were me, I'd have a few extracted for health purposes--No way can all that discomfort be good for anyone! she must have been miserable, in the hospital 2 mos. before!

Poor older siblings will have to raise them! No-one can handle that many. Watched a TV journal program recently that followed a mult. birth of 6 and they needed lots of help, money and some rest! Received a free Van that fit the whole family in and all kinds of goodies for decade or so and the program has followed them from birth until, I think around 7 yrs old now? The health problems that started showing up after a few years! Once can't see. One can't walk and it wasn't picked up at birth.

What a blessing and a burden for them! I'd be glad they are alive and pray healthy forever!:hippy: But, it is easier to toss a puppy on paper and a faster process!
