View Full Version : Sativas and Anxiety

To start off, I get severe anxiety when in public places. Most of the time I will puff a bit before leaving the house to sort of put me in my own world, and a lot of the time it works. But there are times where smoking can trigger my anxiety, without me even leaving the house. This normally happens when I smoke more than usual, say more than one or two grams depending on the quality. This has happened a couple times to me and I got to thinking, could it be the more intense high of a Sativa that triggers it? Panic attacks and Marijuana do not mix well. Does anyone have any experience with anxiety and specifically Sativa strains?
Thank you in advance, peace.:hippy::rastasmoke:

I find that its the hybrids that cause anxiety for me. My theory is that its kind of a conflict of interests going on. The sativa side makes me want to go out and do something while the indica side is trying to keep the remote in my hands. Pure Sativa's always put a big smile on my face and the last thing on my mind is anxiety. Indica's are more prone to giving me anxiety because I don't like it when my body feels to far gone from control. I guess it depends who you are.

Perhaps it is Indica that 'causes this then, because that whole body feeling is what makes me panic for some odd reason.

I've found that stuff with more sativa in it messes with my anxiety..A good hybrid or indica dominant let mature longer thus increasing CBD seems to have a good reaction for me..
Not to mention I've always preferred to be stoned than real high in the first place :stoned:

I've been there, I believe it is the sativas that cause that anxiety more. I've smoke a few and tripped out... but it is all in the mind....

definitely. i smoked two bowls of shoreline a few days ago and felt like i was going to die. some friends and i were hanging out and 15 minutes after smoking i began feeling anxious. i was ready to jet. i have quite some history concerning panic attacks and found that smoking too much (especially hardcore strains like shoreline) brings that freaky feeling back. now it's one puff at a time...

Like the others will tell as well, sativas aren't gonna help anxiety and personally make my anxiety worse too. Indicas relax and put you to sleep if alot is smoked. Light amounts of strong indica's are good for anxiety. Most sativa's in my experience will make your heart race and pace around. Experiment for yourself to find out though.

hello has all !
I do not know if one can consider Satori
Satori (http://www.mandalaseeds.com/html/satori1.html)
and Swiss Bliss
Products - Seeds (http://www.paradise-seeds.com/index.php?language=en&pageid=seeds&prodid=#1011)
as Sativa but their effect does not get panic or anxiety.
These 2 genetics are well for 1 high sativa positive.
when the phenomena of anxiety for a long time are smoked or parano arrives + often.
(that is my case. I am obliged to choose my genetics attentively.) ;)
see has soon

i suffered from severe anxiety/attacks but since i started smoking (approx 4 years ago) i haven't had a single anxiety problem since:jointsmile: having said that if im not smoking, it returns :( although some certain strains of potent indica do not agree with me but its more of a frustration then anxiety :hippy:

The more sativa that a plant has in it the more of a head trip you will get from smoking it. Sativa plants are not good for people who have anxiety because if you smoke a lot you will be tripping in your head, your pulse rate will go up and your thoughts will be all over the place. This can lead to a panic attack or just simply feeling nervous or anxious. Indicas or hybrids that are mostly indica are better for people with anxiety because they slow your thoughts down and calm you, rather than speed you up and make you think faster.

Find a good Indica and as with everything, use in moderation. MJ can be a cause or cure.
It took me many years to find the indicas that best suit me for anxiety. For me, Northern Lights, Strawberry Cough, and most Kush strains will do the trick. If it's really bad, maybe play some really relaxing music while you toke or just keep focused on an activity you enjoy, ie..video games, cars, w/e etc.. Just don't over do it in 1 toke session. If your tolerance is high, stop for a few days/weeks. Hang in there and good luck.:hippy:

I didn't read the full thread ... if it wasn't mentioned above:
Strawberry Cough -- 75 sat 25 ind and BRED FOR ANTI-ANXIETY *yay*
it's awesome.
I do get anxiety from SuperSilverHaze :( and on rare occasions, too much White Widow when vaping.

I have found that in me that the sativas works as a amplifier of your current state. A fine thought can turn sweet... a sour moment can turn bitter. Ii use it to pay attention to such moments for later pondering...kind of like a green highlighter. So I can understand why anyone with anxiety would find a Sativa uncomfortable.

Sometimes I do get anxiety when buds are harvested too early... I've found it was due to immature commercial weed as well as early bud samples during flowering. If already flowering a sat dom pheno I would advice to do so until you observe 60% milky, 40% amber trychs. She will be much better.

Well for me, the Indicas tend to bring on Anxiety i've herd it go both ways, so i think it depends on the person. I like a nice tasty Sativa. Plus I dont get much done on the Indica LOL.

The first time I smoked a weed with a very high THC level I got a little goofy and was walking around the house checking windows and doors at bedtime. I just talked myself back down and laughed it off.
The reason in my opinion is the ratio of THC to CBD. If I can generalize, THC can make you anxious and the CBD is what makes you sleepy/couch locked. I like weed with a balance so I can emjoy the high yet also feel the body buzz for pain relief.
If you are near Oakland, try Harborside Health Center and talk to one of the budtenders about the issue and they can recommend something not to overpowering.

Actually, it's the fact that Indica strains mess with my sense of time that makes me anxious. Sativas are much better on my anxiety. I think the anxiety reaction is largely subjective and individual.

This is an interesting thread and I'd love to hear what strains anyone with anxiety have found work for them. I actually just posted a similar topic asking for a little advice:
http://boards.cannabis.com/medicinal-cannabis-health/177297-cannabis-anxiety-disorder.html
I do agree with the majority that Indica strains do seem to be favourable for less paranoia for some, but on the other hand a lot of people become increasingly paranoid from the drowsiness and couch-lock that Indica strains can cause. So I'm a little confused about what strain(s) would be best.

whats weird is (for me) indicas are generally to blame if i get a panic attack while smoking.
sativas (all though considered to be an up high) relax me as they put me in a positive mood that doesnt let me have my mind dwell on the bad things.
this is just experience though.
i think what does it for me is the body highs make me nervous esepcially if i smoked too much or am not in a good mood to begin with...
sativas are more of a clear high and i like it better...
so i think it matters on the TYPE of indica or sativa...because there are pure indicas that dont effect me negatively.

If you read through all these, you will notice that each person is effected in a different way. You will have to experiment and see what is best for your body.
As a better explanation, most folks with high cholesterol can take any number of the variety of drugs used to combat that and lower the cholesterol. Works great on almost everyone. Not on me. Those make me so sick I wish I were dead, I hurt like the dickens, and have a plethora of medical issues. This is because MY BODY does not like the stuff. I have no control over that.
The same will be true with how various species affect folks. One person will get paranoia, another panic attacks, some get sleepy, some get awake. Your body is your educator, listen to it and learn.

Ya I have smoked Sativas a few times and the times that I did I tripped out bad...When I starting hearing things louder like normally happens instead of thinking it was awesome I just freaked out and got anxious and then my thoughts felt like it they were too loud, like everything I was saying was outloud...Also it was horrible being around ppl...I was just wondering if you figured out a way of sorting out the anxiety...I mean if I ignored the bad trip it would be fine because I love how spacey I feel, I just don't like the anxiety

No matter what I smoke, I get an anxiety attack from hell. It has always been that way. The benefit for me is worth the adrenalyn so now I use a benzodiazapine if I want to smoke and adios the trip to hell and welcome to the smile on my face. :)

I hear that Gilbert but Wash is right. I tried a benzo also but it takes too much out of the Bud. For me it is more therapuetic,I smoke for a week and the anxiety or paranoia is gone. Shoot for me I'm using Cannabis to help me deal w/ 3 1/2 years of 6 then 8mgs of xanax a day.
All of the psyche crap I have taken had the total opposite effect of the listed side effects. That I believe is why there are SO many!

Wow Chance. Thats a lot. I have sativa growing right now. I first smoked it in SE Asia. I hardly remember anything about it except I laughed and laughed and life was good for a moment. I cant smoke too much of it as I do have chores and responsibilities and when nothing gets done here, everyone suffers, especially me. As far as anxiety goes, I have to ride or work when I smoke the stuff (daily). The benzo just takes the edge away for me. I wish it were legal here dammit. :-)
Best wishes.

Yes Sir it is a lot. I still take between 4 and 6mg.
I believe your wish may come true thanks to our economy being in the toilet. Ever heard of geodon? It is what they inject raging people that do not respond to ativan with in the hospital. The pills cost $450 for 60! I personally prefer to spend that on say a 1/2 and some edibles haha.
Thanks for the wishes. I wish nothing but the best for you.Be well.

I have noticed that Indica strains, especially strong indicas, like kushes, have a tendency to cause some anxiety, heart racing, etc.. Sativas, on the other hand, usually have the opposite effect, calming and relaxing the smoker.

i have the same encounter lately. i got really anxious and angry. I did Bubba Dawg and Ghost OG. Both hybrids though. I couldn't trust anyone..i felt mad for no reason. weird. so i cut it down to one bowl a day instead of 2 or 3. I've been smoking for about 3 months straight. Now i just smoke sative (Green Crack) before working out. :) I read about the same reasons on Medical Marijuana Bootcamp site.

I had a really bad trip in high school on this experimental drug called 2C-I. It has fucked me up ever since and I have never been the same. I also have panic attacks and have had them for the last 5 years, ever since i took that drug. I usually have a panic attack every couple of days so it tends to be very disruptive to my life.
Its not the marijuana that is giving you anxiety, its how your mind reacts to effects of being high. Some people dont like the racy, speedy high of some of the sativa strains and can make some anxious. I dont feel anxious on the sativas, nor do i feel energetic. They help me focus and concentrate on tasks and activities better.
Anxiety=Fear
Anxiety is the bodies natural response that is commonly refered to as your fight-or-flight response. Its a natural response that happens to the body during sudden times of stress and when you need to make a quick reaction. Basically if you were walking down the street and a car veered off the road and you had to jump out of the way, anxiety would your natural response. Anxiety disorders are when the brain has lost some of its ability to disguish when you should feel anxious and when you should feel normal.
its just fear basically. You can take prescptions all of your life and fry your fucking brain like my mother, cousins, and grandparents(what the fuck do you think valium does after 30 years? it turns you into a fucking vegatable!)
Do you wanna treat the symptoms or do you wanna treat the disease? I will never take drugs because the day i can calm myself down from a panic attack, is the day my anxiety ends

I agree, in my experience cbd is bad for my anxiety and depression, sativa doesn't mess with me, the only times I trip is on indica and especially on it in public, can't even seem to make eye contact cuz I feel so down.

Personally any type of sativa relaxes me and indica is the kind that could give me some panic about certain things sometimes because it gives me the body high not the mental high. Thats why I prefer sativa over indica! If your having panic attacks on sativa try indica and then try a hybrid ... you need to experiment alittle. If your smokin 2g a day by yourself of course you might get some anxiety so try 1.5 or 1g a day and see how that goes.
