Questions!

I'm pretty sure I'll need to repot once all of my seedlings have sprouted. Problem: my closet floor is less than 2 foot square (19.5" X 22.5) and things are pretty cramped as it is.

The current pots are 6" in diameter and about 6" deep. I realize that might not cut it for proper growth. I do have a bunch of recycled ice cream containers (the 2 litre ones) which are bigger and would still fit in the closet.

I've also purchased one bag of perlite, one of vermiculite and one of peat moss for the repot.

Question 1: search as I try I find no information on the minimal pot size for a good yield (like how small is too small for a cabinet grow?)

Question 2: what would be the ideal mix of perlite/vermiculite/peat moss?

as far as your soil mix is concerned
its not going to have much of a nutrient value.
you should consider buying a bag of compost or if that cant be found a bag of topsoil and a bag of worm castings. i use all of that as well as red lava rock and sand along with the perlite, vermiculite, and sphagnum peat moss.
i cant really provide you with mixing ratios because i just add a little of this and a little of that till it smells and feels just right.
also if you want to maximize your space for pots try getting square nursery pots or just use a couple rubbermaid containers that fit into your space. a sog or a scrog with 1-2 plants will be your best bet in such a small space

Ideally, start in really small pots, like 3", until the plant gets a bit rootbound, and then repot to a SLIGHTLY larger size. This will actually help you in a small space. You'll find that the plants will actually fill those pots a little too soon with roots.

If you are using peat moss, you need lime in the mix. Peat moss is wicked acidic. Lime will take care of that.

I'm guessing the cabinet is square or rectangular, ya?
That would be the most efficient shape for the pots then.

If you start 'em in rockwool cubes, the cubes drop right into a small square pots for the first transplant and they don't go into shock.
Seems like all they notice is the new toe room
Next transplant, I cut the top off from square plastic milk jugs, bore holes in the bottom and wrap with foil to keep the roots covered.
Cheap and easy.

That get's them into puberty, and is easy to cut off for the next step.

For the prom dress, white, rectangular wallyworld plastic wastebaskets work well, and come in sizes.
Deeper than wider, for tall cabinets, and wider than deeper for spaces with less headroom.
They are translucent, but side by side, little light hits the roots.
If they are not butt to belly, you might wanna line them with black plastic bag material.

Can't help you with soil mix. I got fed-up with dirt.
Real happy with my initial results in DWC, (deep water culture).

D'Oh, good thing I asked! :eek: I'll skip the peat moss then, and use the left-over potting soil I already have & mix in perlite & vermiculite. Fourth or fifth grow and I find I still need to improvise ;)

BTW the grow cab is a converted Home depot wardrobe, the floor space is just under 2 foot square, but height-wise I have a good 5' for the plants to grow!

Hopefully 2 litre pots will be...adequate!
