Transgender Contestant to Compete on America's Next Top Model

One of the 14 girls who will compete on the new season of America's Next Top Model â?? which returns to The CW on September 3 â?? is transgender.

"My cards were dealt differently," Isis, a 22-year-old former receptionist, tells Us Weekly exclusively in its new issue, on newsstands now.

Hailing from Prince George's County, Maryland, Isis identifies herself as "a woman born physically male."

Will she be a role model?

"I like to help people, but I'm here to follow my dreams," she tells Us.

The inclusion of Isis is being hailed by GLAAD president Neil Giuliano as "an unprecedented opportunity for a community that is underrepresented on television.

"We applaud Tyra Banks and The CW for making this historic visibility of transgender people possible," Giuliano said.

I hope they treat her with respect. She looks good, hopefully they don't bust her balls too much (no puns intended).

Yeah, they're doing it for ratings. It pays to be shocking. Murphy Brown was, and so was Will and Grace. Weeds is shocking. It's the mainstreaming (*cough* co-opting *cough*- oh shit did I just date myself?) of a sub-culture that had not seen much of the light of day outside of trashy paperbacks with covers that looked like my avatar. When the networks treat the subject with respect, even if it IS for ratings, that's positive media and we all know what drives our culture.. . :wtf:

And to be quite honest, it's about damn TIME a person with a Y chromosome got some damn style, because Elton John's silly hats and those goofball 'emos' and their damn 'guy-liner' just haven't managed to hit the mark yet.

i actually like this show and although i never follow it i always end up watching the random marathons where they show the whole season in a day on mtv lol. but i might just have to watch this one weekly.

^ AH! That's how I see it too.

Usually VH1 plays this shit in loops for days at a time and I end up getting stoned and then getting into it.

I never could understand folks getting all het up about transgender issues! WHO you are as a person, is far more important than WHAT you are on the sliding scale of sex. I think it's great when an unhappy person finds their way- even if it is not our own path.

A friend of mine is F to M. And SO much happier now! His Mom (VERY religious-3 foot tall Virgin Mary statue in the living room religious!). He was a she when we met -I tutored him in college (I'm going to just keep the male pronoun- it's easier). He had been in an accident and needed help catching up. To make it short, I became his supportive "other-mother". His Mom had totally flipped! She was about my age, so he asked me to talk with her. So I talked her "language"- how the soul is important, not the body...gender is just the "wrapping paper in the REAL gift, our souls...yadda, yadda.. and she eventually came to (grudgingly) accept it. She got to the point where she used his new name and proper pronouns (usually) before she passed away last year. She wasn't real happy about the changes, but he was "her child".

My friend says I need to go back to college and get my degree in Psych and be "other mother"/psychologist to others undergoing their change. It was so cool to watch this very troubled little girl become a confident man. He's married to a gal with 2 (ADHD special ed) kids from a previous and is an activist for gay and transgender rights. He's a great dad!

I could earn a lot more $ as a psychologist in the big city, but I think I'll stick to helping kids in our little backwater town. He's thinking of moving back to my school district, incidentally.

I expect to see attractive girls on these model shows, i'm usually always disappointed, no that i ever watch them though.. yea, yea modelling isn't about looks.. it's about the walk, confidence, blah blah, to me, a models essence is their beauty, their attractiveness, their desirability. This transgender person.. good luck to her i guess, if she win's i'll be appauled but it won't supirse me.

How long until there are Trans-species contestants? They'll shave the hair off apes and enter them in bodybuilding and beauty contests. Next they'll want combination transgender/trans-species entries, as well. :)
