This is my first post besides my introduction and I have a few questions........

So I'm 19 and I've suffered from really bad anxiety since I was about 11. I also have trouble getting to sleep as much of my anxiety is at night, keeping me awake. I also think I might have ptsd in light of recent events. The therapist said no, but my nightmares tell me otherwise. I have trouble managing all my stress sometimes. I've tried meds and even a holistic approach. Now I don't live in a state with medical marijuana and I don't know much about it. although I have been smoking 'without government consent' since I was about 12. I just wondered if anyone had information regarding michigan. I read a post about it being a possiblity sometime soon........

If marijuana was legalized here. does someone with experience know if i would qualify for it from my description of issues? It would be great if I could get it without fear of being arrested.

Ann Arbor has decriminalized it to an extent. Currently Michigan has no mmj legislation although there has been talk of it. Could MMJ help you...Well probably if you found the right strain. I too suffer from everything you happened to mention due to the Iraq war, and find that a good indica mellows me out to the point where I can relax where when im out.

Check out NORLM to update you on the current and future things going on about Michigans laws. Right now the thought of growing in MI scares me a little because they do have tough laws. NORML will also educate you on the specifics of MI law.

There's 5 mmj legal cities at the monent in Mich.
Ann Arbor
Detroit
Traverse City
Ferndale
Flint

I'm fortunate enough to live in 1 of the above named cities already . Go register to vote so the whole damn states mmj legal in Nov. Then get a Dr. to give you a written recomendation including their practices address and their lisc. no. and you'll be good to go incase Johnny Law comes knockin .

Whose mind is it anyway? Yours or the therapist's? :wtf: I think you understand what's going on in your head more than any therapist!

If you feel cannabis helps, then it helps! In California, you would qualify, no problem. A copy of your medical records/ note from your therapist briefly stating you were being treated for anxiety, insomnia, etc, the cash, and you'd be set! No telling how loose or strict a state will be until something gets passed! The language of a law often depends on the feedback that activists provide. Good luck and get "active"!

Turn your therapist on to my post (link below), there are a few studies on the psychological effects of cannabis in it, and other stuff he may find educational. If you have the paper and ink, a print up is pretty impressive. :D

I have had/have PTSD from a traumatic car wreck I had a little over two years ago. It changed my personality. I'm not so laid back and passive as I used to be. My "fuse" is also a lot shorter. Cannabis helped and helps, but I tend to use to the point of abuse, imo.

It's not a miracle drug. I also have used another natural "drug" which I cannot name due to this being strictly a MMJ forum. I induced visions with a cactus. I do not recommend you or anyone else doing the same, it's playing on a fine line of something helpful or something really really bad.

That was probably the major role in me taking a different view upon what happened and how I deal with it. Generally speaking, cannabis makes me slightly more apathetic, relaxed, more tolerant, and just more pleasant.

Drugs in general affect different people different ways. What works for you might not work for the next person.

Saying all this I do not like nor agree that synthetic drugs are overall good for anyone or anything.

This is going to be skating the line and I hope that someone edits this out instead of deleting my post if it is deemed a violation of the rules.

Valerian is something you might want to look for at your local herb/health food store. It will help reduce stress and relax you. There are numerous other herbs that can be helpful in your situation.

Erowid (http://www.erowid.org) is your friend!

Oh yeah "Granny" StormCrow has loads of useful information and insight.

The pertinent question is whether you've really already found cannabis successful for treating your anxiety. If you have, then it sounds like you'd be a good candidate. I personally believe people with anxiety need to be uniquely careful with cannabis, particularly in light of the fact that you don't live in a state where medicinal cannabis is yet available. Decriminalization is one thing. Real medical availability is quite another, particularly where treatment for anxiety is involved.

Unless you're growing your own or obtaining it from someone who does, the cannabis you get on the street is likely to be sativa-heavy and heavy on THC. The high THC content is considered desirable for its psychoactive effects, which is why that's what you're more likely to find from illicit sources and street dealers. Unfortunately, the THC is also what can aggravate anxiety in many people. It can also bring on other psychiatric symptoms in some vulnerable people (delusions). If you read the threads in this forum, anxiety and panic attacks after smoking are fairly commonly reported side-effects.

One of the other cannabinoids, cannabidiol, or CBD for short, does not have psycho-active effects, but it's the ingredient that seems to do good things to lessen "aggravating" effects of THC that can occur in some patients. CBD is also the key anti-inflammatory ingredient that is particularly helpful for other medical conditions. Scientists who've looked at the effects of cannabinoids are fairly certain it's CBD that ameliorates, or lessens, the effects of THC and helps make it more easily tolerated. They and the dozens of other cannabinoids, some of which don't even have formal chemical names, all work together in interesting ways.

All this is a long way of saying be very careful about trying to treat anxiety with street-bought cannabis. You really need to be in a real medical state where you can get a recommendation and go to a dispensary and find a strain that's helpful for anxiety. Or you need to grow your own or get your cannabis from someone who does. People who treat anxiety often find that Indica-dominant strains, which tend to have more sedating effects, work best.

I'm not sure what sort of doctor you're working with, but I'm always skeptical when I hear someone not believing patients who've been through traumatic events and are having nightmares and flashbacks or assuring them they do not have PTSD. I've been treated for PTSD myself. I used to be a paramedic and saw several really traumatic accident and injury scenes. They definitely stick with you! I was treated with a technique called Eye Movement Desensitization Response (EMDR), and it worked beautifully. Nowadays professionals are realizing that more and more patients suffer from PTSD than previously believed. It's quite common among paramedics, battlefield medics and veterans of combat, among others. If your doctor is not believing you, find another!

Good luck to you! My heart goes out to you. I know anxiety isn't easy to deal with. I struggle with it myself. These days it's medical school that stresses me. If you're into holistic healing, try the most holistic approaches of all: exercise, meditation and guided imagery/breathing relaxation. Those really do help.
