YOU ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED THAT THE BOARD OF STATE CANVASSERS WILL MEET ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2008 AT 10:00 A.M. AT THE MICHIGAN LIBRARY AND HISTORICAL CENTER IN THE FORUM, 1ST FLOOR, 702 WEST KALAMAZOO, LANSING, MICHIGAN.
Included on the Agenda will be:
- Consider meeting minutes for approval.
- Accept testimony on the statement of purpose for the three statewide
proposals identified below. All testimony should be prepared to assist the
Bureau of Elections and the Board in creating and approving a statement of
purpose for the three ballot proposals below. This hearing is not the forum
to debate the 'pros' or 'cons' of the ballot proposals.
- COALITION FOR COMPASSIONATE CARE: Legislative initiative to allow under
state law the medical use of marihuana.
- STEM CELL RESEARCH: Proposed constitutional amendment to permit with
certain limitations stem cell research in Michigan. (At this date the
initiative petition filed by the sponsoring organization remains under
review.)
- REFORM MICHIGAN GOVERNMENT NOW: Proposed constitutional amendment to
effect a wide range of governmental changes. (At this date the initiative
petition filed by the sponsoring organization remains under review.)
- Such other and further business as may be properly presented to the Board.

Schedule for Canvass of Initiative Petitions and Creating and Approving
Statement of Purpose
The hearing is being conducted to extend interested parties the opportunity
to offer their views on the content of the proposals.
The deadline for challenging signatures sampled from the two initiative
petitions which remain under review elapses on Wednesday, August 13, 2008.
Interested parties wishing to submit background information on the proposals
or suggested ballot language for the proposals should direct their
submissions to the Michigan Department of State's Bureau of Elections no
later than Thursday, August 14, 2008.
The staff reports on the sufficiency of the two initiative petitions which
remain under review and the recommended ballot wording for the statewide
proposals will be released for public review on Tuesday, August 19, 2008.
A Board meeting will be conducted on Thursday, August 21, 2008 for the
presentation of the staff reports on the sufficiency of the two initiative
petitions which remain under review and the consideration and adoption of
ballot wording (statement of purpose) for the statewide proposals.
