View Full Version : Question for Stinky, planting by the moon

Hi Stinky. I don't like rumor and such, I like science. And I know you do too. SO I am wondering if there is much merit to the claims about superior plants by following ancient moon phase secrets, almanacs and such... planting this crop when the moon is waxing or transplanting or sowing seeds under a new moon, etc. I hear this from a few really old tokers I know, always rambling about how they grew plants under a black-light or how you can top a male a bunch of times and make it female etc. I have heard more crap, just don't remember it all.. It pisses me off because they don't want to listen to the science I tell them. Anyway, I am sure you have heard lots about the moon and have a good answer! Thanks!

there are tiny tiny bits of truth buried underneath all that manure.

"Plant seeds by the Dark of the Moon" (new moon)- 200 years of folklore can't be completely wrong. I do it, because my mother said so....

Can't hurt anyway. Too bad the Farmer's Almanac doesn't cover cannabis. The moon does affect aspects of our environment. I have no clue as to how other than the tides. The weatherchannel.com tracks the moon cycles though so it must be important for some reason.

Good reason to do just about anything.

Especially if she's nuts, lest she tie you to a tree in the middle of a forest fire for a few days.

I doubt, if gravity is much of a factor, (tides), too small a variation.

Hmm, lets think about it...

We know that some plants are strongly influenced by photoperiodicity.
So, giving a seedling almost total darkness for the first two weeks of it's life, as opposed to full moon light, by timing the planting, just might set it's "mood" for the rest of it's life.
It just might change the number of weeks 'till flower, if the plant has "expectations" imprinted in the first two weeks of life.
Or the eventual height, or leafyness, or attitude, etc.

Ah dunno really, but, it's food for thought.
What do you folks think?

Aloha,

The concept of planting by moon phases is probably not much (if anything) more than a convenient calendar followed since the beginning of agriculture by farmers who did not have access to actual 'calendars' (since they weren't really accessible to the largely illiterate population). Counting moon cycles from the Winter Solstice will give you a repeatable time at which to plant. Beyond that... I think it's a bit of bunk, lol. But that's just my opinion :D

I've never had a problem in not following the phases of the moon. Does that mean I'm saying that it doesn't work...? Not really, but it definatelly does not fit my schedules, and I'm not about to create gaps in my grow-cycles waiting for the moon, or for Saturn to rise beyond Venus, or waiting for the next solar eclipse....

With all the manipulation needed to pull-off an indoor grow, I really doubt the moon has much influnce on the plants, but more like stinky said...an easy to remember 'guide' for farmers, to bring the local crops to harvest on a predictable date. (being late in delivering product to an already full market isn't very profitable)
Could simply be that the moon makes it's easier to figure-out when you're supposed to plant, if you don't own a calendar.

Yeah, I know this shit. How? Eh beats me, but in college I got accused of plagiarism a couple times by professors who claimed that it was impossible for me to have been able to discuss certain concepts without having looked them up, and I was therefore lacking in my citations, and my argument was how can I cite what's in my head? lol! WE battled, they grilled me, and eventually I got As in both classes. haha. Learning disability my ass.

I'm not a farmer and hopefully am literate but I think this lunar calendar might be just the thing for me. I understand my Gregorian calendar when I can find it in my paper stacks. Or remember to input into and look at my newfangled computerized one.

Now to convince my various creditors that lunar billing is reasonable accommodation for ADD.

That's what I needed!

Perhaps scientific experiments are to come!

Anyway, today the same crazy old grower friend told me burning a tire and sprinkling the ashes around a flowering plant would be great fertilizer.. :wtf: That is disgusting, tires release so many creepy and poisonous chemicals when burned... yuk.

Tire ash? MAaaaaaan, tell your friend to take a shortcut and use molasses if he wants a whole damn mess of carbon! too funny.

As for lunar billing... I think we should start a movement. Not just as an ADD accomodation, but also for OCD; the concept of paying bills at the SAME phase of the moon EVERY MONTH, also conveniently pointed out by KITH as the same time one gets her period, I feel would be very harmonious and calming. At least as harmonious as sending half your paycheck to creditors CAN be...

...what?...don't you think farmers over the past 200 years didn't notice a difference or improvement...in the time they planted seeds?

I'm sure many tried full moon planting seeds too. We're not talking "make it or break it' ..we're talking "improvement".

"Corn planted under a waning Moon grows slower but yields larger ears."

Garden Guide: Outdoor Planting Table - The Old Farmer's Almanac (http://www.almanac.com/garden/plantingtable/index.php) -
"The best time to plant flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground is during the light of the Moon; that is, from the day the Moon is new to the day it is full. Flowering bulbs and vegetables that bear crops below ground should be planted during the dark of the Moon; that is, from the day after it is full to the day before it is new again. The Moon Favorable column below gives these days, which are based on the Moon's phases for 2008 and the safe periods for planting in areas that receive frost. See Moon phases for the exact days of the new and full Moons."
