Skunk, Haze, Afghani, Kush, etc

i know the differences between indica, sativa, and ruderalis. but ive noticed a ton of strains/hybrids/crossbreeds to be made from Kush, Skunk, Haze, Afghani.....

what are the differences? like, what makes a skunk a skunk, or kush a kush....

can anybody explain?
