See this site for explanations regarding those stats: Drug War Distortions: Emergency Room Visits (http://www.drugwardistortions.org/distortion6.htm)
The federal DAWN report itself notes that reports of marijuana do not mean people are going to the hospital for a marijuana overdose, it only means that people going to the hospital for a drug overdose mention marijuana as a drug they use. Since marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug it is the most mentioned illicit drug when people come to the hospital for any reason. Also, alcohol-in-combination is a larger problem than any of the illicit drugs.....................Important Note: Mention of a drug in an emergency department visits does not mean that the drug was the *cause* of the visit. The DAWN report for 2000 says, regarding mentions of marijuana/hashish.......................Since marijuana/hashish is frequently reported in combination with other drugs, the reason for the ED contact may be more relevant to the other drug(s) involved in the episode."

Consider the source of this info, NIDA :admin1: When, in 1989, it was reported to the federal government that, "Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest theraputically active substances known. It would be arbitrary, unreasonable and capricious for the DEA to stand between those sufferer's and the benefits of the substance."-Francis L. Young Chief Administrative Law Judge, DEA, 1989. The Feds rejected this report and told Francis to re-do the report focusing only on the negative aspects of marijuana use, rather than create more propaganda he quit. WAY TO GO FRANCIS!!!. Propaganda bullshit!!! My step son works as a Dr in an ER and he has never even heard of a marijuana related ER/Hospital visit :smokin:. Peace...

I'm so scared... I'm going to quit RIGHT NOW!!!!! ;)
Breukelen Advocaat has a good quote. That is absolutely why those figures sound the way they do. A kid passes out at a party... goes to ER... doctors ask kids what they were doing... "Drinking and smoking," they say... and then that's ONE MORE STATISTIC TO ADD TO THE LIST.
I'm pretty much finished with anti-marijuana ads and "scientific studies," because I have been doing my own study for the past 10 years. Never been to the Emergency Room ONCE for a marijuana related incident.
Another good thing to address here is the statistics of young people in rehabilitation for marijuana. I'm not sure where I found it, but I read that the highest number of teens in rehab... are there for marijuana. Now, when most citizens read that... I just supports their ignorant fears about the substance. However, these facts are very misleading.
For example:
When a high school student is caught drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes (both dangerous substances that can kill you) they are usually punished by there parents and may miss out on school activities, depending on the situation. If police are involved, it is usually just there job to detain the teen until parents arrive.
NOW... when a teen is caught smoking marijuana, either at school or at a party... law enforcement is almost ALWAYS involved. The teen will most likely receive a fine, community service, and drug counseling.
I must admit, I have experienced this first hand. In high school I was caught drinking on numerous occasions... and it usually resulted in me not being able to go out (not really even that though). Now, I was caught smoking during a lunch break... got arrested... detained for almost 24 hours... questioned by a detective blowing cigar smoke in my face... calling me a prick because I wouldn"t tell him anything... treated like a dog... sitting in a cell in my socks and underwear. I was then almost tried as an adult, spent over $5,000 in legal fees, ordered to do hundreds of community service hours, and forced to undergo drug counseling. Later, at the meetings, the counselor told me that I absolutely DID NOT have a drug dependancy problem like the court decided I did... and it was a waste of tax payer money to have me doing this. I was like 16 or 17.
When a teen is caught abusing alcohol (a PROVEN dangerous and addictive substance) they are considered to be going through the natural phase of curiosity... and receive minimal LEGAL punishment. When a teen is caught experimenting with marijuana, they are hit with a flood of legal, social, mental, and physical punishments that can scar the young person for life.
Now... how accurate do you feel those statistics are? To me, it is like when a driver experiences a fatal crash... they test his blood... and he tests positive for marijuana (even though he may not have smoked in weeks) and the official cause of the accident is driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
So to any "anti-marijuana" advocates that may happen to stumble on this forum and particular post...
UNLESS YOU SMOKE AS MUCH AS I DO.... YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO MAKE CLAIMS OF THE POTENTIAL HARM I AM DOING ON MY BODY!
I'm seriously going to start calling the police when I see a fat person eating a candy bar or a cheeseburger. If we are allowing other citizens to police morality, based on their idea of a healthy life... well... fat people shouldn't eat fatty foods right??? ;)
Oh wait... I forgot... WE DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO DO WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR BODIES!!!
Well... that's my rant for the day. Stay :D and Keep

That is a really sad story. This should not happen in a first-world country, supposed leader of the free world...
Sounds like cruel and unusual punishment, a violation of... um... oh, what was the name of that old document we used to reference...?
The cigar-smoke in your face is police brutality and endangers your health. In 1 average cigar, there is enough nicotine to stop a person's heart.
If you do not mind me asking, which bible-belt state did this persecution occur in?

If you do not mind me asking, which bible-belt state did this persecution occur in?
Surprisingly enough... It happened in one of the states that speaks of Freedom in the motto. :wtf:
I remember it like it was yesterday...
and for the record... that is just the story I am comfortable talking about. That is nowhere near the worst of my experience with cruel law enforcement.
Now, I am fully aware of my rights as a citizen
And I urge you all to as well

Nope, it's not shit. I've known people who got too high and wanted to go to hospital. Like it was mentioned, usually edibles. Edibles can rock your world. I'm going to grab my last two pieces of lemon-poppy/ganja bread for tomorrow's breakfast. YUM! If one does feel like they are too high from ingesting herb, best thing is to eat something and wash it down with milk.

man people have really weak self control then. I've never freaked out from smoking too much. I mean I've had episodes where i've felt really uncomfortable and I KNEW I smoked too much, but i just grabbed some food and listened to some tunes and I snapped out of it. I've never thought "MAN THIS WEED HAS GOTTEN ME SO HIGH THAT I NEED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL". Although it does make sense if people are just telling them its pot even though it really isn't.

If a toker is educated, and understands that under normal smoking conditions, or with edibles in a dose that is even far beyond reasonable- you're NOT GONNA DIE!!! lol.
Even that dude who died smuggling a couple # of hash in his stomach died of toxic shock from what it sounds like, NOT an overdose.
So don't freak out, maaaaaan! Just post up those killer edibles recipes here with a trip report so we will all know how much was too much lol.

I would also like to point out... because we ALL know how ignorant many "non-smokers" can be... I think there may be another scenario that could be included in that nearly 80,000 ER visit figure.
Johnny comes home late for curfew and smells of freshly burnt cannabis. Fresh off of their daily viewing of Reefer Madness, his parents notice the odor of the Devil's Herb.
Mom: "Oh my god Frank... little Johnny has been smoking drugs!"
Frank: "How much did you take you little bastard?"
Johnny: "We just smoked a joint before the movie."
Mom: "Ohhhhh my god... a marijuana cigarette?
Frank: "Johnny... look at me... are you overdosing?"
Johnny: "No, I'm probably just going to go to bed now if that's okay."
Mom: "Frank, get your keys. We're going to the emergency room to get Johnny's stomach pumped. It's the ONLY way to get those drugs out of him."
The End
Now, I'd say that accounts for a few thousand. :stoned:

Mostly noobs having panic attacks. I'm well seasoned but the first time I tried edibles, I had a full blown panic attack. I'm no stranger with panic disorder, once it was handled... I never went back.
I also have to wonder how many of these had other drugs or alcohol involved.

Maybe I've just never smoked potent enough cannabis, but I've never had a panic attack or paranoia problems.
I have smoked some really good stuff though, so maybe I'm just one of those guys. :stoned:
Keep trying. It's kind of exhilarating in the beginning. Just try to get it in check before you hear the helicopters coming with the men in black who will jump out onto your roof and you omg have a HEART ATTACK and a SEIZURE. It's all downhill from there until the IV benzos in the ER kick in.

Yeah there are many reasons:
1. People get anxious and go to the ER (nothing medical is wrong, it is all mental, mainly a result of the paranoia generated by the legal system)
2. People smoke marijuana and also use another drug, but then report both to ER personnel when it's the OTHER drug or the COMBINATION that is causing the problem (not the cannabis)
3. Lies, lies, lies. If you report that you use THC and you have some unrelated condition, idiot doctors will blame it on the cannabis even if it's unrelated.
4. Some of those visits are for real side effects...but certainly not all of them.

Somehow, I think this thread has one it ought to be linked to:
The majority of people go to the ER with a 'racing heart' and they think they have gotten laced mmj! I would bet 98%! Since, I saw a lot of them and not one was for any other reason. However, there are threads in here of some really odd ordeals some have endured and remained calm and smart enough to know what they were using and how to handle the situation!
I'm sure this will link to a medical thread that will give you tons of info, from all the medical community here! Hope so! We'll see!!

I wonder what would happen if everybody came out and said they smoke weed and make it well known, even the famous people, let the media bombbard us every week so that non smokers might at some time come to understand that here all these people that we know, and we know there sain, and they smoke weed, like the people who live around you, and know you to be a smart, wise, hardworking joe, then mabey just mabey we will be able to start changing peoples mind. You know like, they could say you meen that nice guy across the street who keeps his yard real nice, who have good kids, a good job ect...you meen he smokes weed, wow he seems cool to me.

ALL EMERGENCY ROOM PATIENTS get a blood test... go figure... the only thing this confirms to me is the widespread use of cannabis...
I for one have been to emergency room after a severe anxiety attack with very similar signs to heart attack (that was the first time in 9 years of smoking i got an anxiety attack right after smokin bud and thnx to all the hype about risk of heart attack after smoking in the media i was fooled for it and plus i was alone by myself without any1 to contact but 911... didnt dare dying behind the wheel myself)
sadly i contributed to this stats in the US :( but u gotta understand how it is when u r overweight and u have smoked for a quite a long time and all of a sudden your heart is beating @ 200 bpm and u get massive chest pain + sweatin etc... had i known people get like this cuz of mj, i would have just relaxed as i learned to do afterwards whenever this happened again
also, i was given morphine in the ambulance to calm me down or something and the dumbass doctor came and said "u r healthy as a horse, your weed has most likely been laced with morphine!!!!!" hahaha i was like no way dude, i heard it in ambulance when they said give him some morphine! and plus what idiot would waste their morphine to lace some weed lol

Please do not be of the opinion that you must take a blood test if the Dr. ordered it. You have the right to refuse the blood test, it is not mandatory, because it is like buying a loaf of bread. You may need it, but you don't have to buy it! Pr
