View Full Version : MVP's Random WTF Quasi Grow Log
Well, its been a while since I started a grow log. Plenty of plants, but no time to really post my own thread. All of that is changing (kinda) as I am posting random stuff up as often as I can manage. Sound like fun? WTF, who knows at this point...
Hence the "MVP's Random WTF Quasi Grow Log" title. :wtf:
Let's start with a photo or two and see where it goes from here. This set is called BEANS. As in Indica Beans.
Not a whole lot more, but more. I'm going to get a little dirty, as you can tell by this next shot. Not sure what I am doing, but I am doing it with a purpose. Well maybe not a clear purpose, but I wanted to post up some pics without hijacking the thread of a few pals.
Ok, on to the photos:
1. Tossing dirt this weekend, yeah baby!
2. The BUBBLEBAG 8-screen model (complete with carrying case!)
3. This is where the cold water extraction magic happens...
So feel free to sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight on MVP's Random WTF Quasi Grow Log :D
Actually they are sitting, but what's the difference anyway?
More nonsense photos:
1. The Indica Beans 6 weeks later in their little mini-DWC hydros... aren't they beauties?
2. The Grow Cabinet, by IKEE-UH. Slight mods, 250 HPS, exhaust fans, and you can have one too!
3. My meds that I cannot partake until after I get a new job... Damn whiz quiz!
In anticipation of the first audience question: "What Meds are those, MVP?"
Answer: From left to right... Master Kush, Grand Daddy Purple (aka GDP), and Kushman's Strawberry Cough.
More later kiddies!!!

I'm in for this....... glad you have more time but hope its something good and not bad that's changed for you.
Alright! The Weedhound is riding shotgun on my little foray! :woohoo:
Welcome Weedhound, I was involuntarily introduced into the land of the unemployed last week so I have a bit more time to goof off and post on my favorite site! The upside is I don't have to commute and I can spend more time with my little ones. Downside is that I have to get a new job soon (aka have to pass a pee test) or I'll be moving to a lower rent area.
But WTF, no worries, I'm happy and healthy ('cept the chronic back pain thing) so I'll be just fine.

nice setup, those bins sure do take up a lot of space tho your ladies are looking nice and did u get feminzed seeds? goodluck with those 4 plants, ill be sure to check up on this every now and again
Stealth, glad to have you on board. Check this link for more info on GDP, it seems to be accurate with other sources I've spoken with, but I am not the expert. I've heard that it is a three way cross of Purple Urkel, Grape Ape, and Lavender.
Marijuana Strain Library - Granddaddy Purple (http://www.kindgreenbuds.com/marijuana-strains/granddaddy_purple.html)
Yeah, I hear ya on the FF stuff. I'm going slow and steady since I've never done the full life cycle in FF dirt before and I'm used to hydro. Hydro = fuckup, flush like hell, pray a bit, plants recover (usually). Dirt is not that forgiving which is why I use it almost exclusively for mothers. Hope to get a few nice GDP moms in dirt. I bet I know some people that might like a dirty mutha... :D
Hey shadow, thanks for dropping in.... yeah they take up space which is why I'll sex their clones (they're non-fem seeds) and as soon as I know which are ladies, they will be flowered together in a deeper, more space efficient hydro setup. If they were fem seeds I would have them in that setup now, but untangling roots (after culling the males) is a huge pain in the ass and stresses them out.
At any rate, check back every week or two and feel free to ask questions, etc. Limited hijacks will even be considered. After all this is a Random WTF Thread... :weedpoke:

Thanks for sharing your grow here, MVP. :noel:
When the lights fire up in a few hours, I'll sneak a few peeks of the girls in the closet and the cabinet as well. I've got a few minis/budsicles in there to make it interesting. Should be a cornucopia of stuff for show and tell... Stop by later and check it out.

Well just to be selfish i'm really glad to see you more often MVP!
Photos of the wardrobe cabinet I bought at a major Scandinavian retailer and converted to a stealth grow cab.
1. Doors open but panda velcro'd inplace to prevent light leaks.
2. Pulling back the curtain to reveal the good stuff...
3. Tada! A bunch of hempy buckets undergoing final flush!
Uh oh, wait a minute, something is wrong............. :wtf:
Hmmm, let's see... I had 1 large hempy bucket and 4 Mini hempy pots going, what is wrong here? WTF happened to the other Mini?
Dammit, another one bites the dust. I had her tied up nicely but the fussy little thing went Hara-kiri on me! :blueknife:
Well, as the autopsy photos show, she was a bit overweight so I guess it is really no surprise. She beat me to it by a couple of days! The poor little budsicle snapped under her own weight and what you see it the ENTIRE plant, with Coke can there for visual reference...
Yes folks, no games, no photoshop. Just two pieces. The hempy pot/stem, and a fat bud that is hanging in the drying closet... R.I.P. :wtf:

mvp is there anyway u can sho some pics of ur exhaust hook up reason being i have a old wardrobe i might want to bring in to play thanks in advance
tokr
Hey tokr,
The exhaust is basically a 4 inch vent cut with a hole saw and a 4 inch muffin fan mounted on the outside of the cabinet. Air intake is accomplished by creating a false floor 3-4 inches high that draws in fresh air from the back of the cabinet. In essence I pulled the backing board away from the bottom 2 inches of the wardrobe, making a light baffle to keep light from leaking into the grow area.
Hope that makes sense. I'll see if I can snap a few photos and post up so you can see what it looks like... :tin foil hat: :tin foil hat:
Hey tokr,
Here are the photos. Pretty basic stuff, I just needed a drill, a hole saw and a 110V muffin fan.
1. View from inside the cabinet.
2. Picture of the type of fan used (approx $15 off ebay).
3. View on the right side facing the cabinet.
The vent hole is 4 inches, the fan is 4 inches square with a 2 prong cord run to the fan. It draws next to nothing in terms of power. The vent is up high since hot air rises, and fresh air is vented from under the floor as described earlier.
Like I said, pretty basic. Hope that gives you a good idea of what is happening as far as ventilation.

yes MVP...check your email!! I too am quite intrigued with the bubblebags...never actually got any...love to see if someone can tell me they are "worth it"
whiskeytango
Hmmm, I think I could be talked into it... I am gonna chop my closet gals this weekend and then might have enough trim and popcorn for a small run. Would have to talk the GF into playing photographer but that isn't too tough. How does that sound?
To make it interesting can you all hit me up with what you wanna know/find out and I'll use that to plan my next experiment? :twocents:

Yeah!!
Okay then, I'll set aside some time to run the Bags this weekend. But I'll need to know what people want to see when I take pics, or what to experiment with so that will be worth the time. Basically I don't wanna get a bunch of follow up questions that could have been answered if mentioned up front. :wtf:
Given these ground rules, who is in? I say that once we get 4-5 topics/questions lined up we are good to go....

Who is next? C'mon peeps kick in some q's... :detective1:
Ok...here i go...;)
Is there really that big difference between the differed grades of hash from the diff bags??
And, is it worth to do more runs whit the trim, or just do 1 run, but a tough one??
Which is better, frozen fresh, or dry trim??
Btw...nice log MVP...some more bud shots would be great...
Hey Zeb, thanks for joining in here. I'll register one question as a follow up to whiskey's "how do the screens results compare to each other?", and add your other - "is it worth it to do more than one run?".
I plan to do all runs with fresh frozen (wet trim stuck directly in the freezer) since that is what the Bubblebag guys recommend.
So far so good, we have the following Q's lined up:
1. How do the screens results compare to each other? :greenthumb:
2. Is it worth it to do more than one run?
Very cool. We are almost half way there.... who in the audience wants to step up next?

fresh green compared to frozen & dried?
whiskeytango
The Bubblebag directions say you can use fresh or dried plant material - just be sure to freeze it ahead of time. The cold water extraction method uses ice cubes and water to separate the trichomes from the plant material.
Think of similarly to removing candle wax spills from carpet - freeze it with an ice cube and it separates a lot easier, right?
Since it is all going into ice water anyhow, brittle dried material would be rehydrated, so fresh frozen is best IMHO. Also that way I'm not getting little micro-pieces of herb in the finished product making it darker than if I used fresh frozen.

I'm not sure if I have a question or not.....I've been wondering about using fresh vs dried (both frozen) but I'll hold off on my q and see if it gets asnwered along the way.

whiskeytango
So let's just say :wtf3: and add that question to the list, if I understand it correctly. "What method is better: dried then frozen plant material or fresh frozen material?".
For a preview of the possible answer, refer to post #29... but I don't know for sure, really. ;) The smoke report will tell......
Weedhound

Right i saw that....and the reason I wonder is because the more WET my weed was (read: waterlogged) the harder it was to seperate the trichomes from the other material. That's why I'd like to see how it works here because I don't really use screens....just a strainer and then a coffee filter and the coffee filter holds EVERYTHING.
Ok....no real clue if that made sense or not.....you guys tell me. :D
Hound, do you use ice cubes in your cold water extraction method? And freeze your herb before extracting? That is key...

MVP....yep....ice cubes and I do freeze it. I need SCREENS.....like your cool bubblebags have.
For anyone that has followed my past logs, you'll know I was running a 430 HPS with a ValueBright hood... Guess what, I upgraded!
Now I have a Lumatec Digital 600 HPS ballast with a top of the line DayStar reflector that has 6 inch straight-thru cooling. It's connected to an Super HPS Eye Hortilux bulb that really kicks down a shitload of lumens, something like 88,000 +/-. The closet is 7 square feet, so that's way over 12,000 lumens per sq ft! :silly:
Venting it all is a 449 CFM Vortex inline fan that pulls air first via a 24 inch charcoal filter, then thru the reflector, then thru the fan itself, and out the roof vent. I run it wide open 24/7 and have a big time negative pressure situation where fresh air is inducted passively.
At any rate I figure I'll post a few pics and see what y'all think.... The white cord in front is to a circulating fan to keep the girls fresh and happy. Threw in the third pic since it looks a little more in focus.
I figured that if I don't put a shot of them in then I would hear about it later. They went into 12/12 the Sunday before 7/1....
1. Looking up their skirts.... to see the grow room amenities.
2. Two hot GDP babes hanging out in their Hempy pots.
3. Lower part of grow closet showing the drainage setup - bus boy trays!
I had to tie up a few colas last night but did not snap any photos at the time. Good stuff yet to come they are 25 days into Flower...
Any questions or photo requests just let me know.....

Hey how's that fan and super cool hood working? You may want to think about getting the "kinks" out of your tubing there.....
Hey Hound, The hood and fan are working terrific. There is so much velocity for that little closet (3.5 ft x 2 ft deep) that even the little kinks in the vent lines are not a problem. I don't have room on either side to make the bends less drastic but it blows super hard there are no worries. I've been in the attic to double check and it is kicking ass up there regardless of the inefficient setup...
Oh yeah, dig the green light I installed to be able to work on them during their sleepy time.... :abduct:

MVP, when I grow up, I want a setup like yours. That light is awesome! You mentioned your growbox/tent is in your attic? I'm thinking about an indoor setup, and my only possible location will be in my attic. Temperatures in my area would restrict use of my attic for a grow location until fall, winter, and spring. Can you give me any insight into how you manage high temperatures in your attic during the Summer?
Also, as to the bubblebags - how much trim do you need to filter through the bags to get a good pressing of hash?
Glad to be a part of the WTF thread, as WTF is my normal state of mind.
Hey Jake,
My attic is too hot as well, so I have my setup in the closet of an extra room, and a cabinet in that same room. I've tried the attic thing years ago in NorCal but gave it up cuz heat was too hard to control and limited overhead room.
Insulating the attic with styrofoam panels, etc can control heat if you build an airtight enclosed, but that is lotsa time and $$$.
Good luck bro and thanks for stopping by. Ask as many questions as you want and I'll help ya however I can.....
Here are a couple of shots after about 30 hours of darkness as I prepared to harvest these plants two nights ago. They are in the I-KEE-UH type grow cabinet, Hempy Buckets (3 parts perlite:1 part vermiculite) and flowered for 60 days under a Sun System II 250 HPS.
The photos aren't pretty; they have been flushed and nute starved for almost a week but they are now hanging in the drying area.
They are uncompressed so may take a minute to open. I wanted to post them up like that so y'all can see them in detail if interested.
Bud shots from the chop from 2 nights ago that is drying, and the Mini that fell over last week. Mmmmm, GDP nugs! :smokin::smokin::smokin:

So what is it about the GDP that makes you a fan MVP?
Outstanding balance of all of the herbal qualities I appreciate: great aroma, smooth taste, balanced effects, tight nugs, and the fact I can function and get pain relief at the same time. Hard to describe without passing you a big fat one, although I have not yet cooked with it yet. Similar to Strawberry Cough but a little more body and deeper (more noticeable/distinctive) taste.

And the 3 of 5 GDP cuts that were in the fridge for a bit over 2 weeks prior to cloning have rooted.. the first one I put in FF soil a few days back is showing new growth already. She is going to be a nice lil dirty momma. :D I think I will throw the other 2 in dirt too but they just showed earlier today so I'll have to think about this later tonight... maybe 1 dirt 1 hydro

Lookin' great, MVP! Boy, the perlite/verm really starts to look like soupy oatmeal by the end eh?
It also looks like you've got quite the yield considering pot size! Is that a 1 gallon coffee can? How long did you veg them for? What nutes are you using? Are you sticking with the hempy buckets for next round or you going full dirt or a different hydro style?
Sorry for all the questions! I hope I'm not turning this into a traditional grow log ;)
edit: Does anyone else HATE the new image display thing as much as I do?
Here is what happens when I leave town and don't post for a month: lots of growth and a few photos.

Hey All, thanks for stopping by... this is the result of 2 GDP (grand daddy purple) plants grown in Hempy Buckets (3 parts perlite/1 part vermiculite), watered daily.
Yield unknown for another week to ten days, but hoping to get a total of 6+ ozzies. If grown in my normal DWC setup, I'm guessing it would be closer to 10 ozzies.
Props to the homesitter for being cool and taking care of the girls! :D
