LIFT EV'RY VOICE AND SING
also known as "The Black National Anthem"
by James Weldon Johnson
Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
Till earth and heaven ring.
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise,
High as the list'ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet,
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might,
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee,
Shadowed beneath thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.

Sounded like she was introduced as "Renee Martin", but her name is Renee Marie. Maybe she was pissed off because they didn't get her name right. ;)
Just found her website, where she wrote an explanation:

Well... this american division was foreseen long ago... in the Bible, in the book of Daniel, the king had a dream, and the dream and its interpretation follows:
The dream:
(From Daniel chapter 2):
"31Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
32This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
33His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
34Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
35Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth."
And the interpretation:
"36This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
37Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth."
The second kingdom was the Assirian, and the third was Rome.
And now comes the fourth kingdom, that is the USA:
" 40And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. "
Its not any news that the USA is a divided kingdom... but now we are really witnessing it...

Somehow, I think it was more of a 'Political Statement!' Just a thought. As our anthem is suppose to represent all people of this nation! It is begining to look like a few have the color of presidential candidate confused as the color of the flag!
I think this gal wasn't very bright. Surely, she had a contract of what she was suppose to be getting paid to sing! In her case, it may just be a business dispute! Who knows, but customs are expected by most!:hippy:

I agree that it must have been her seemingly creative way of making a political statement. Backfired, though, didn't it?
Illinillinois, I'm thrilled you posted this thread and shared your feelings. I tweaked your title a little so it wasn't quite so edgy toward people who may not share your sympathies about this world and our country being one earth, one people, one purpose. I'm not sure if you're old enough yet to realize this, and in order to do so you may need to have spent some time in parts of America where there still are very strongly divided racial lines. But believe it or not, for many people of color--far far too many, to be honest--we still are two very different cultures--black and non-black. (This is the way they see it, at least. And in their world, it is that way because there are very marked differences in way of life, education, income, etc.)
Is it ideal? No. It'd be lovely if they all saw us as one earth, one people, one culture, too, as you do. I think it's marvelous that you feel that unity! Increasingly the younger generations do--or will see us that way, too. I just want to remind you to step outside your own perspective for a moment and put yourself in the shoes of someone who may not have had the same advantages and education you have, and I suspect you'd real quickly see that, for plenty of groups, particularly the poor and racially diverse, we've not yet arrived at that unified ideal.
Just something to ponder . . . and why, from her perspective, perhaps, that anthem might have meant more to her than "The Star Spangled Banner." Obviously, she still pulled a fast one and was trying to sorta in-your-face to our official national anthem. I just suspect there was more to her motivation and her feelings of being separate than you might have realized.

I didn't say "you blacks have your black america and etc"..
I did just say you can have your etc.. and etc.. Not directing it to any race. Any Group of people that fight so hard to overcome something, then fight when they are victimized, then turn around and then do it themselves.
I can take what you said and receive it as another view out into the world.
Hope ur weekend was good..

I know you didnt, babe. It was clear to me how you meant it, which was not harmfully intended. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't have been misinterpreted by any others who might have been reading it through another attitude. You're one of our peacemaking, friendly regulars here, a leader that folks look up to, so I just softened it a tad lest there be any misunderstanding.
Hope you've had a good weekend, too, hun. This is strange, but in our town, they're having another big fireworks "thing" tonight. I can hear the explosions from my office! (Unless my neighbor has bombs going off in his garage. . . . ) Feels like July 4th on July 5th here in north Texas!

At least it wasn't the Borat version of the National Anthem of Khazakistan...
The funny thing in the video is that all the white folks are just standing there looking a little bit confused, like I would be, but the black guy who is behind the singer looks really nervous, sort of like, "Oh, crap... You're gonna get us ALL busted!"
