i was watchin friends on sky the other day and it was thanksgiving and they were eating "yams" ive heard of them before,i was just wondering if someone over the pond might be able to tell me what they are? they sound weird

Actually yams are not sweet potatoes. They are totally different produce although people confuse them all the time.

yams are used frequently in west indian cookery very nice with goat rice and peas..

Most supermarkets and grocery stores here have them, mashed with regular potatoes and pureed parsnips they make gorgeous potato cakes fried on the pan, or oven roasted with garlic and rosemary mmmmmmm feel's like dinner time :rolleyes:

Bubble n' squeak for those who don't know, is a dish of leftover mashed potatoes and vegetables ~ made into rounds, dusted with seasoned flour and fried on a hot pan with butter :p very tastey :)

i make it aswel on the odd occasion.... ddnt realise you could buy it though.... bubble n squeak is traditionally a way to use up the day befores left overs.... best with ketchup :)

is bubble and squeek a bit like corned beef hash? bit of potatoe,onion,corned beef and beans fried up? its not called hash because its got hash in it,just a name, but putting hash in it,great idea! i think only southern people eat bubble and squeek dont they? with jellied eels? or whatever you crazy southners do!

haha, jellied eels, gross.....
bubble n squeak are the left overs...... potatoe and vegetables, mostly mash n cabbage...... fry it all up in a frying pan.....
