Hey friends
I am thinking about a move to Long Beach, CA from North Carolina. Can anyone give any advice or experience on the community? Anything is appreciated. :rasta:

Lots of nice clubs in the area, but on the other hand 75% of it is ghetto land.

Long Beach is a great place to live. the best areas are downtown below 7th st to the ocean and all of the east and west areas in there. not to expense depending on what you want. a studio run you from 600 to 1200 depending, and a one bedroom starts from 800 and up. there are at least 6 dispensers in long beach and a number of home deliveries. you will love long beach it always cooler than the rest of l.a. in the summer. hope that help

welp, here's some info.
i've lived in soCal for most of my 54 years, and only visited Long Beach a handful of times. i always kind of considered the area to be kind of a ghetto by the sea.
i definatly couldn't handle living there.

a really cool thing about Long Beach is the Grand Prix, where they turn the downtown streets into a race track. That's always a lot of fun. I can't remember but I think its not far from Hermosa Beach and Manhatten Beach if you prefer a smaller community. I loved the bike path on the beach. I lived in Santa Monica and used to ride up toward Hermosa along the beach just about every evening. :stoned: :smokin: California girls are soo hot, especially in a bikini and roller blades. :pimp:

Long Beach is cool. The thing is anywhere in LA country is going to be polluted. We've got two big ports, one by LAX airport and one in Long Beach. Long Beach used to be a bustling and cool 1920's towne with a bathhouse with filtered ocean water, a downtown boardwalk called the Pike, big waves, and orange groves inland. Now...well now it's going from having gone to crap to being rebuilt. Now by the ocean there is something called the Pike, but it's basically a big waterfront shopping/dining center. Right next to it there is a place called Shoreline Village though, which is pretty cool. There are also boat rides and helicopter rides and all that touristy stuff. Whalewatching can be fun if you go on a good day.
The people are very diverse. You've got a lot of poor people...immigrants, drug addicts, homeless. There are also, I'm not kidding you, swanky high rise condos the next block over. You've got rich yuppies living a block away from a family that lives 8 to a one bedroom apartment. We've got gangs, but mostly if you stay away from them they won't bother you. If you are chill and just doing your thing you should be fine. I walked around downtown as a kid in the 90's and never had any problems because I kept to myself in public and just always had a place I was on my way to. There are a lot of artsy types and musicians in Long Beach. We've got a lot of great local bands, in all genres, and live music is becoming big here again. Because all cultures seem to be represented here we have awesome authentic food in from just about any country available. Every day is interesting in Long Beach.
I recommend a deadbolt on your door and asking your neighbors where the best neighborhood pizza and Mexican food are. You can save money for your meds by shopping at discount grocery stores such as Notricas or any other large store that caters to the Latin American population. You can find all sorts of cool Mexican food ingredients and also it's way cheaper. There are some Asian supermarkets around too that are also cheap and you can get good tea and stuff there. We've got a big Indian neighborhood in nearby Cerritos also. The food is great.
Anyway, if you have any questions let me know. It's an interesting place to live, and I know I'm a better person for all I've experienced here.
Edit: I forgot to add, we no longer have waves. You have to drive 15 minutes to Seal Beach (cute tiny old fashioned beach town) to surf. Our beach water is not very clean and I don't recommend swimming in it, although there are nice bike/jogging/walking paths along the beach.
