For a constant user, switching strains is a cool way to "cheat" your body's tolerance level for cannabis so you can get high again.... but I'm also more interested in the health aspects of it.... medicinal tolerance.

When most people talk about building up a tolerance to cannabis, they're referring to the ability to feel high/stoned.

What I want to know is, once tolerance to the high/stone is built up, does that reflect the body's tolerance of the cannabinoids' medicinal properties?

I've read something about the recepors in the brain having like an auto-switchoff for when max levels of THC or whatever are reached... but what about for the rest of the body?

IMHO, 'medicinal tolerance' is not the same.

There are many, many chemicals and cannabinoids in cannabis, in different ratios depending on strain and such.

THC is the main psychoactive chemical and is found in all strains, and a specific tolerance to THC may build quikly. When persons first encounter cannabis, they may experience a loss of motor coordination. This is quite common, and tolerance to these effects is the first to build. I only experienced abnormal coordination maybe the first 2 or 3 times, and never again.

Tolerance to other cannabinoids like CBD that cause the depressant effects may build very slowly in comparison to THC.

I have not been really 'high' in many months, but I still observe the medicinal effects of relaxation and appetite stimulation as well as the ability to alleviate insomnia.

Thanks for the reply, it's helped me to clarify my vague question...

What I'm curious about is the body's tolerance to it's healing properties (like fighting cancer). I should have been more specific with my question. All we know is that for some things it does seem to work, but how well and for how long is still unclear.

I'm thinking that there's just not enough information yet to know about medicinal tolerance. I just can't consider the relaxing, pain killing, and appetite stimulating effects of it as "medicinal"... those are more like physiological side effects to me which are still very beneficial. (side effects may include numbness to pain, drowsiness, increased appetite, etc. lol)....

For most of the things that cannabis seems to be used for is to treat symptoms. It's also used for directly treating ailments although they can't always be directly felt/measured by the patient (you can't feel the level of your own immune system, or feel the levels of brain chemicals, etc).... we're only aware of the changes within our body by the alleviation of symptoms over time; just because the pain goes away doesn't mean that the cause has been treated.

Almost sounds like I'm trying to make an argument now when I read over it, but I'm not... I'm totally confident of it's ability to treat both the cause and symptoms of various ailments. I'm just trying to find out how effective in the long run the body's tolerance would be for it's ability to directly treat illness.
