misting my plant????

ok so what is the point of misting your plant(s), everyone always gets told from one person or another to do it, but i think its an old wives tale... anyone have any idea on the benefits of doing this, I had always been told by my grandmother that {water on leaves+hot sun = burned up plant} because the water magnifies the sun or some shit... idk some help on this would be much appreciated.

You can water them by misting them. If you you put water soluble fertilizer into the bottle you can feed the plants by misting them. Neither is as efficient as root feeding, but some people like to do it.

Also, misting can be used to control pests Many pests don't like to be soaked, so regular misting (especially if you get the water on the underside of leaves as well as the top of the leaves) can be used to treat or prevent some pest infections.

As far as it leading to burns by magnifying the sun... that sounds more like an old wive's tale to me, to be honest. Also... consider that it came from an old wife! LOL. (no offense to your grandma).

You of course probably don't want to have the leaves soaked all the time... maybe that is how your grandma got into problems. That would be more likely to lead to fungus then burning though... at least that is what I would think.

But a misting a few times a week, or maybe even once a day, would probably be good for the plant. Oh, and I don't think you're supposed to mist the buds when flowers appear... not because of burning, but because of potential fungus if the water can't evaporate easily.

thanks. I appreciate it. A fellow grower around here told me to mist in between waterings, do you think it could help with heat stress? Give a quick misting when I see the leaves starting to curl.

wet leaves and direct sun or HPS lighting will definitely fry the leaves. Your grandma knows exactly what she is talking about. Trust me, i have done it. Look at a droplet on a leaf and you will see the magnification. If the sun is filtered or the lights have just turned on, its usually safe. Always trust the grandparents!

not if its water or nutes. the plant will take it up before it suffacates. and there are stomas on the topside also.

That may be true... I don't know. But if that is true then its all the more reason to water (and mist) in the morning or the evening before the sun is high. That is when watering is recommended anyway, I believe. And the water would be absorbed or evaporated by the time the sun got high, I would think. Once my plants beat whatever ph or nute problem that is plaguing them now (if I can get them looking healthy) I'll do a test mist at mid day on one, and in the morning an another.

Hell, maybe I'll post the results on my grow log too...
