bug problem need help

None of my plants have died yet because of the bugs but i fear they might soon.I read on one website if you leave cigerette butts in hotwater over night then spray that on your plants it will keep the bugs away for about 6 days.Is this true or does any one know any better ideas without using expensive chemicals?

you don't say what kind of bugs, different bugs, different remedies
