In addition to continuing its public hearings for the city budget and land use codes, the Arcata City Council will also be deciding Wednesday on an extension of the temporary suspension of the establishment of new medical marijuana dispensaries.

According to staff reports, the city staff recommends that the City Council extend the moratorium, which suspend the issuing of new licenses for marijuana dispensaries, in order to continue developing medical marijuana land use standards. It does not affect currently established medical marijuana dispensaries.

The moratorium was for an initial 45 day-period and will expire on June 21. It can be extended for up to 10 months and 15 days. City staff indicates that the discussion of standards will not be finished by June 21, so an extension is required. The Planning Commission plans to move forward with reviewing the marijuana standards at its June 24 meeting.

City staff is working toward meeting with established medical marijuana dispensaries to review the need in the area, as well as schedule public hearings before the Planning Commission in order to develop land use guidelines that will regulate medical marijuana dispensaries, growing, and processing operations.

The staff will also work with the Planning Commission to develop zones where dispensaries can be located, criteria for storefronts, environmental quality standards and how to address community safety issues and off-site, unintended consequences.

Sounds like they had to do something. It was getting kind of out of hand. Though I haven't heard about any violence going on.
