View Full Version : OMG, that's/you're so EMO!!!

I swear to God, I'm gonna strangle the next person who says this to me. All of a sudden this one, insignificant little sub-culture has come to dominate and monopolize any and all themes dark, as viewed by those not immersed in the culture. Frankly I'm getting sick of this whole emo-hatred itself; I wouldn't ever embrace this way of life myself, really not my style, but is it really so outrageous a concept that we just let people be?
Now "Emo" has become a taint; not of the culture itself, but of the means by which it is applied by it's haters. This relatively new label is doing a lot more harm than most people realize. It de-legitimizes people's real problems, makes those suffering from genuine illnesses a matter of contempt and mockery, rather than sympathy and a desire to help as it should be. More and more these past few years, I find myself treading more lightly in everything from music tastes to personal issues, constantly weary of the possible response "OMG, you're so emo!" Even said by my "friends".
Last night I was on a YahooAnswers page with somebody asking about how to hide scars from cutting. They weren't even detailing their problems or their habbits, simply wanting to know how to hide the marks. But, sure enough, a bunch of people had to start yelling "EEEEEMMMOOO!!!!" I felt so bad for this girl who was just trying to find a little advice, but now in this emo-hating culture, people with real problems don't dare tell anybody for fear of mockery. Nobody's allowed to be in mental pain any more; now you're just emo.
Any time I showed my (former) best friend a new song, I'd get the old "That's so emo!" if it had any theme at all even bordering on depression or darkness. I don't even listen to punk, let alone emo, but apparently this label can even be tacked on to death metal.
All I'm sayin' here is that if you want to call something emo, make sure it's actually emo! It shouldn't be so broadly applied that any subject with just one aspect of the emo culture automatically becomes emo itself. I'm just getting so sickened by it's overzealous use which imposes a shame upon those who have depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, self-abuse problems, or just likes some depressing music. Surely the last thing we need to be doing in this mentally-unhealthy society is to create even more stigma against people with mental health disorders.

You bring a good point to the table. I think its rediculous that not only do people make fun of emo's but a lot of other classes as well. Punks, goths, wiggers, Valley girls. It's just so stupid to get all rallied up over someone's attire. It's just a style and though I think all of these styles are dorky, its just a style that isn't hurting anyone and honestly as long as they don't bother me then I'm cool with it. And you're friends a retard if he thinks that emo is death metal. I don't like death metal but I still know that its a huge difference from emo.

Agree 100%. I think emo is a silly thing to get into, my motto has always been "depression is not a fucking fassion!", but I consider these kids in to be misguided, not somebody to hate on.
Emo is about skinny boys in tight pants, shitty/whiny punk music, black hair over one eye, poety, I'm proably missing a bunch of things, and generally glorifying mental illnesses that shouldn't be glorified. It irks me to no end that the term is being thrown at legitimate clinical depression and accompanying symptoms, as well as dark themes everywhere. It makes me feel.....

what people call emo today is never what it was meant to be, specifically the style of music people label emo. It's been so bastardized from it's origins (sunny day real estate, rites of spring) that the forefathers wouldn't even be able to listen to modern day "emo".
This is something that pisses me off, what people call emo now should just be called pop punk or pop emo or SOMETHING anything else than calling it what it isn't and never will be.
well the music is shitty. usually it is a term thrown at people with no friends who whine about it and dont do anything about it then decide to start making themselves appear radically different than the rest of society then blaming their problems with social relationships on everyone besides themselves. or it is thrown at people with stupid haircuts, but then they should probably be able to take the insult.

BTW all this emo shit is not new... in the middle of the 18th century already there was people who today would be called emos... they used to think that die for love, by tuberculosis, or by suicide (love caused) was nice... they used to write songs, and poetry, and all this shit... but its now old history, and we call that age the "romanticism"... they were the forefathers of the emos... bleagh!

Well at least they reject the disgusting chav, gangster culture where behaving like an asshole is glorified. Emo's aren't really a threat to anyone, except themselves in some cases. In the UK chavs constantly victimise emoâ??s/ goths and recently someone was beaten to death for looking like one.
What exactly is the difference between goths and emos? what is their music because I listen to black metal sometimes is that emo?

I have been into hard rock/metal my whole life and what kills me is these "Mall Metal" or "Emo" Kids trying to come in and takeover the whole scene. Its kind of like the kids who dance around like idiots in mosh pits when they are supposed to be kicking the shit out of each other not flailing there arms around like a bunch of crazies. Emo is becomming almost a whole new generation and now it seems to be hip to be sad and pissed off at your parents and life. I personally like to express myself by listening to certain music depending on which mood im in not dressing like a sad depressed person with tight jeans and a "emo" hair swoop. Just note that im not bashing anyone who dresses like this, I have countless friends who do it im just stating my opinion on it.

To me, Emo's, or what the word has actually become, is people with no mental illness, who had a good, stable family life, and live with mom and dad in a nice suburban wasteland. There is a difference between being mentally ill, and just wanting attention. To me, Emo's just want attention.
If someone said emp to me, I'd just tell to eat shit. I'm fucking metal as fuck. I eat emo's for breakfast, shit them out, and feed the shitty emo's to more emo's, then eat that emo, and shit out the shitted out emo and the new shit emo....well you get the idea. :p

Not offended but I think your view and most peoples in here are extremely skewed. Falling prey to the stereotype of what Emo kids are.
Just like in anything there are extremists that stand out. Look at fanatical Christians, extremist Muslims, PETA, Nation of Islam (some of them), and many other organizations..
The individual does not reflect the masses.
Also many of what people all Emo when seen in public are actually just your regular run of the mill scenesters.
Enjoy your culture bashing everyone. It's fun to belittle others
ps: I don't listen to Emo music incase someone was going to lash out and call me emo. Sorry to disappoint
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I will defend their freedom to voice it but I thought I would point out the obvious lack of respect to other human beings whom have probably done nothing to you.

Daihashi, you are ever the respectable voice of reason in these arguments. Man, I hate seeing statements like, 'If your life sucks, just end it already!'.
It is possible to have a profound sense of malaise over what is, in fact, and ugly world, without being suicidal. I respect those who carry on long-term discussions of the sadness of modern life far more than I respect those who blithely run pointless errands in their SUVs with a cup of Starbucks epoxied to their perfectly-manicured hands, trying to ease that malaise with the trappings of suburban 'culture'. That's an image that says nothing to me but, 'look at how much money I can spend on having a perfect life... and my kids are STILL abusing their ADD meds!!! I love suburbia!!! [insert Weeds theme music here]'
I'm still not really sure what to think about the hair-over-one-eye thing. Why on earth do people lump goths and emos together?
Goths are awesome, well the ones I've met anyway, of course they cant all be awesome. At the other end of the scale there is of course the emos who are, infact, all fucktards.
Oh well at least we know they wont be creating any spawn on account of their balls being forced up into their intestinal tract.

I have seen them, ignored them and just learned what the heck they are! My opinion; I'll keep doing the same and allow them to be just who they are. So long as they aren't hurting anyone else; But, oops, blaming their parents- thats' gotta hurt, but what's new! So, I guess, I'd feel sorry for the people they 'blame.'
Frankly, if I have had enough with someone and they use the suicide card--I offer them a gun (only did it once)! Put up or shut up. Either they need attention or they are using you! People can only use you if you let them.
Either it is an act or they are sick and really need our help and understanding! Hippies were bad and look how great we all turned out!
Ya just gotta love a lot of energy of wanting to run someone else's life for them.
As if we have all the answer. I sure don't! Good thing we all have that freedom of choice!
I think, the main thing is, someone just did not want to be called emo! As if it were a bad word! Calling people names, is not a good thing! So, if someone says, you are so emo, perhaps you could ask them if they really know what emo is? I just learned, teach them, as you did us. Then, maybe ask them to stop calling you names!:hippy:

I agree no one should wear clothes that require lubricants and/or multiple people to get in and out of- unless you are an astronaut or hazmat responder. In which case your clothes are funny-looking anyway, regardless of the fashion of the moment.
However attaching that rule only to members of one gender is a bit sexist, now don't you think? There's getting to be an underlying theme of homophobia and intolerance of non-'mainstream' gender/lifestyle expressions in this thread that I find profoundly disappointing, especially coming from a community who proclaim themselves free thinkers.
