Is it possible to achieve 1 pd off of 600 watts? What is a more realistic number with pretty decent growing skills? Im thinking SOG with Granddaddy purps X moonshine X urkle.

Is it possible to achieve 1 pd off of 600 watts? Yes, given enough time in which to do it.

What is a more realistic number with pretty decent growing skills?Between 0.2 and 0.4 grams per watt per month spent in flower.

Choose a better yielding strain. The 'elites' were bred for taste/color/effect, not for yield. You want weight, grow a commercial strain.

Thanks Stinky... I am at a dead end with aqcuiring new genetics. I have a lot of sativa dominant strands at the moment.
Note the elites where all crossed out in the west mountains.. I have not had a chance to see them in the garden but I know I need to trust you on this one!:) I sure wish I could sit down and burn one discussing our hobby stinky.(Discuss specifics) How many would you plant under a 600 for a good SOG?

Ms. Attic,
Excuse me if this is OT, but can you recommend a nice NL? There are so many- every breeder has one.

I wouldn't. Okay let me explain. First I'd start under something cheap to operate, that gives blue light. If you plan to flower under HPS600, you can veg under either flouros or a MH250. Read this thread:
http://boards.cannabis.com/basic-growing/151941-importance-continuous-canopy-s-all-about-efficiency-baby.html

Look very closely at all the pictures and note the relation between plant size and pot size, and that the distance between plants is constant. If you start under a big HPS you are WASTING MONEY.
First decide how big you want them to finish.
Then calculate how many will comfortably fit in your space of that size. Add a couple, because being squished together for just a couple weeks prior to harvest isn't all that bad if you have good air flow.
Next, start twice as many as you hope to finish. Remember males are useless.
Only use your HPS for flowering. Yeah, you CAN use it for veg, but it increases stretch. In fact, keeping your halide or blue flouros as the light source for the first 2 weeks of flower will help keep your canopy flat. Check out the bank of flouros showin int he closet indiscretions thread. It cost ~60USD for the 5 fixtures and bulbs, and gives good, and cool, coverage for vegging plants.

IMHO, those elites are beautiful, wonderful, sweet tasting strains that are worth growing out but trying to bank on wieght is kinda setting up for disappointment. On the up side, they get you WAY higher than lower quality genetics would.

Would you rather have a pound of Beasters (worth $2800USD) or a pound of OGK (worth 6 grand)? lol! I know the answer to that one.

Thank for the thread Stinky, very very informative...So informative I have nothing more to bug to about:jointsmile:
Luckily over the years I have accumalated a few fluoro sets so thats a check..
And now that I think of it...I have no idea about electricity...
Since I will be setting up a small fluoro room, Could I hook up my 430, 600, and 2 fans to one line in the room? Also I may need to add the AC because summertime humidity sucks!!!
Could you point me in a direction to figure out if all this would be safe. Or the safest way to accomplish this without spending more on electric setup

I think I gotta go with the OGK..Of course you already know!!!! LOL just wondering how much i can accomplish. Gas is killing me LOL Now I have 1030 watts to play with with the thought of going fluoro for veg. THANK YOU STINKY.

Probably everything but the AC on one line, but put the lights on 2 times so the big one comes on FIRST and the little one comes on half an hour later (=minimize surge draw on startup).
The ac should be run off a different breaker. Add up everything on each circuit according to rated amps, and make sure it is less than 90% of the total rated amps of that breaker, and that no ext cords are overloaded en route.

Honestly that is one of the threads I am most proud of here.

I like the NL..Have messed with it a few times. But its time for a challenge...Something knowone else can get their hands on my neck of the woods.

Oh didn't even see the NL Q.
I wouldn't know where to begin. It's a workhorse strain. I got the Nirvana cheapy ones and found a decent mom in the pack. I've never grown out one from a different source. Sorry I can't help ya. My picks for commercial would be PPP, Papaya, Critical Mass, Black Indica. All are hearty yielders and tolerant of abuse.

Dutch Passion's Oasis is a nice NL #2 variant. A real producer from what I've seen and it's fairly cheap over at seed boutique.

When to put under HID? It has been about 9 days and plants going on second set of leaves.

You can stay with flouros ( I'd recommend that for a first-time grower)or go uner HID, but remember that a HID put off a lot of HEAT, which seedlings are vulnerable to. Balancing distance to the light based on maximizing intensity while minimizing heat is tough. Put your hand palm-down at the level where the soil surface will be. How does it feel? Too hot? Raise the light. Now, note this distance- where it feels comfortable. If your seedlings stretch a lot at this distance, consider using flouros, because your overall temperature is too high.
More mature plants with better roots are more tolerant of heat.
