I often wonder what drives carbon based lifeforms to become 'alive'. From the very first life on earth I'm intrieged to know what the spark was to evolve and expand.
This also got me thinking about when we die. Does the life force run out or is a displaced to create new life. Is every life in the universe connected with the same force.
I'm not expecting specific scientific answers to these questions but I'm interested in what other people think about this topic.

I've always supposed that what we know as "life" is a circumstantial phenomenon that occurs when chemical reactions come under conditions that allow them to form certain distinguishable cycles. These cycles can be extremely complex, but there is another quality to their activity.
From personal experience, being "alive" is far more than just being an organic system. There is a seemingly mystical aspect to life, known as the state of consciousness, and I often wonder why lots of people believe a CNS is necessary for possession of consciousness. It seems to me that consciousness is what indicates the presence of a "life force," so it wouldn't totally be a stretch to say all living things share a sort of consciousness.
I think when we die, it is our status as corporeal member in this vast chemical symphony that we lose, as if we were a small cog in a great mechanical painting wearing out after working our share. What we would not lose is our cognitive membership, that mystical force called ego, self, soul. When our minds shed the bonds of our physical body, perhaps we will finally be able to know the "big picture" and revel in it's beauty and grandeur.

ah life force, my arch nemesis, ever elusive, ever present.
Mind, Body, Soul... an interesting threesome of concepts, the mind guides the body, the body acts upon the mind, and the soul drives them both.
Soul is supposedly the purest, most pristine, holy essence.
Body is supposedly the darkest, deepest, filthiest evil.
the mind, therefore, is caught between them, molded and modeled on the same playing fields as both spirit and flesh,
influenced by both utter darkness and blinding light.
the mind.... three conscious states, reflecting the mind, body, and soul...
The mind resting in the subconscious world, thinking, memorizing, contemplating.
The body, consciously acting, experiencing, creating memories.
The soul, all knowing, aware of the psychic, connected to everything via the superconscious all of infinity, the void of nothingness.

Nothing is to a blank canvas as Infinity is to a painting of Life itself.
we may be nothing more than recycled matter and energy timeless, and ageless throughout time, but we live, we die, we experience, we sleep, we create, we destroy, we are aware.
no, we are not just eternally recycled matter and energy; we are awareness itself.
awareness is to physics as electricity is to a light bulb.
