Anybody see today's Nova on PBS??? It was about the mystery of the first flower... anyway, after a new genetic reclassification, seems like strawberries are weeds first cousin...

I think I read about this somewhere before. Pretty crazy and cool.
Since cannabis is in the plant family called Cannabinacea, which also includes the Hop plant, I wonder if hops would also be related to strawberries?

It's actually hops.
Cannabaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabaceae)
Strawberries are in the same order, but are not members of the cannabacea.

I thought that was with the old classisfication... though I'm no botanist

I'm going to go poke around and see what the specific classification change was- they've been in the same general order, the rosales, all along though.
One thing to note is that strawberries are monoecious, while hops is dioecious just like cannabis- a very significant distinction.

I was half watching the special on the first flower ( watching soccer on comp)... It's really worth watching especially for those who like me, amature gardener... too funny watching botanists get hardons for orchids on the side of the road... It was like he found a budding skunk tree.. too funny

ah, dang I had cannabaceae spelled wrong.... tons of people out there keep spelling it "cannabinacea" I dunno why... too much misinformation to filter through while researching stuff.

I think I might have heard or seen or read from someplace at some time that Strawberries do release some sort of pleasure chemicals in the brain, maybe dopamine or that love chemical. Maybe weed releases the same thing. But that is freaking cool. I gotta find some way to smoke a strawberry.

Glad to see people still watch PBS. I love PBS for the fact that it's untainted by money. No spins, no lame attempts to hook viewers, very informative, and real.
Anyways, one day I stumbled across NOVA's website and found out that they put their shows online: Watch NOVA Programs Online (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/programs/)
I believe this is the show you're referring to: First Flower (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/flower/)

So I can grow strawberries in my growroom, and tomatos too? It won't cause any problems will it? :hippy:

stickys right... i read some where that you can brew your own beer with bud instead of hops.... it would be hella expensive tho you would need some were near 2 to maybe 6 oz of bud if u wanted to completely swap hops for bud ;)

I AM BACK FOR QUICK VINDICATION!!!!!!!!
I frequent another forum from Brazil in portuguese (Growroom.net) , but I am back for a this one post... (if I'm commiting any infractions by posting that other forum please edit it, thx :))
NOVA | First Flower | PBS (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/flower/)
Whoever has the chance should watch this somehow... around the end... they go on to say that genetically there's a new classification,
but from the transcript itself;
NOVA | Transcripts | First Flower | PBS (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/transcripts/3405_flower.html)
NARRATOR: Now with the assurance of DNA insight, the family tree of living flowering plants has largely been written.
The old family tree was now in for a major pruning. Roses were found to be closely related to squash, strawberries to marijuana, this meat-eating pitcher plant to China's famous rhododendrons.
For centuries water lilies were thought to be nearly twins with the lotusâ??no longer.
so there... :giggity: ALLLLL RIIIIIIIGHT
PS... I know stinkyattic doesn't frequent here as much these days (like me), but I learned alot from her, and I'm sure someone could pass on that info to her....
Peace out homies...
