i have a large 2 ft plant under 1 hps light. the fan leaves are freakin huge but my friend advised me not to cut them off. i was thinking of tying the down because the leaves underneath seem to not be getting much light. i have heard hps lights are strong enough to penetrate the lower leaves so should i just leave them alone or what?? thanks.

I train my large leaves around all the time. I just use a bamboo stick to push the leaves back and hold them out of the wayof lower nodes.

They re-orient them selves usually within a few days, just like LST, ..but you just keep training them around :)

Yeah I tie them. One of the plants I have going right now has huge fan leaves. In the past I've used bread bag ties to tie the leaf from the stem to a lower or adjacent leaf stem or you could just use string like you do for branches.

I use the twisty ties also, i tie down everything from the get go. If its a grow that i wont be around much [such as an outside one or so] ill use string...tie it around the bigger branches/stems and pull them apart so light gets all the way through the plant

My only concern is are the big fan leaves still getting as much light? Those fan leaves are your solar collectors and main source of light to the plant. Never remove them. But you can move leaves around, just don't shade a fan leaf.
