This is really weird.

At the end of this, you will be asked a question.

Answer it immediately.

Don't stop and think about it.

Just say the first thing that pops into your mind.

Fun Test...This is kind of spooky!

Find out if you are among the 98% or 2% of the public.

Amazing test....just follow the instructions as quickly as possible.

Do not go to the next calculation before you have finished the previous one.

You do not need to write or remember the answers, just do it using your mind.

You'll be surprised.

Start: What is . . . . 15 + 6

And..... 3 + 56

And..... 89 + 2

And.......12 + 53

And.....75 + 26

And.... 25 + 52

And.........63 + 32

I know! Calculations are hard work, but it's nearly over. .

Come on, one more.. 123 + 5

QUICK ! THINK ABOUT A TOOL AND A COLOUR !

Scroll further to the bottom...

A bit more...

You just thought about a Red Hammer, didn't you?

If this is not your answer, you are among 2% of people who have a different, if not abnormal, mind. 98% of the folks would answer a Red Hammer while doing this exercise.

If you do not believe this, ask your friends to take the test and you'll see.

what did you get..

duppy man
02-26-2005, 07:52 PM
by asking people certain questions you can get them to think in a certain way which is very predictable they did not count on stoner's doing the test..did they..in answer to your Q. god knows, its just entertainment

I guessed red hammer as well. I think the theory behind this is what we call in linguistics salience, a rather vague concept, but useful in instances like these: red is the most "salient" color because it sticks out more than any other. Red grabs your attention more than the others; that's why they use it for many kinds of warning signs, stop signs, etc. In linguistics, we also know that red is the color a language will have a word for if it has no other color words. For example, there are languages with only words for "black" and "white" (but they're actually broader in definition--usually red, orange and yellow are called "white" and green, blue and purple are called "black"), and there are languages with words for "black", "white" and "red", but no language with only "black", "white" and some other color, suggesting that red is somehow more different from the other colors, or more important, i.e. it is more salient. So when someone tells you to immediately think of a color, you're more likely to pick a particularly salient color like red. It is interesting that most of the answers here are among the four most salient colors according to what colors languages have colors for. If a language has words for "black", "white", and four other color words, it is overwhelmingly likely that those colors are "red", "yellow", "green" and "blue" (think about it -- that would be a lot more useful than, say, "orange", "purple", "brown" and "pink" for color words).

I'm assuming a similar thing applies to tools. The first tool to pop into your head is likely to be one that is frequently used -- a hammer, screwdriver, handsaw, or something, not more specialized tools like a vise or a power sander.

red screwdriver

The only reson that people say that it should be the other way around (98% abnormal, 2% normal) is because not everybody is replying to the tread, so we don't get everyone's answer. The people that didn't respond could have gotten the red hammer, but we'll never know.

red hammer here. that is bizarre- i wonder what the theory is?

Same here. It is pretty weird...even though I had to use a screwdriver tonight (and I never use tools), I immediately thought of a hammer, then the color red.

So...what is the trick? Why did I think of a red hammer?

shadowfox
02-27-2005, 11:33 AM
Okay I googled it and found out the trick. It's pretty common sense I guess. Btw, how many of you guys actually did all the calculations? I know I didn't.
Read on to know the trick. I'm too lazy to put it in my own words. This is from some dude on the sciscoop boards:

This is actually a very simple trick often used to defraud investors in the stock market.

Hammer is a most commonly used tool. Google count for the word hammer is about 3 million as opposed to 0.5 million for the wrench and screwdriver. Red is the most commonly referred color (google about 60M compare to 40M for blue or green). It means a large chunk of population, something like 30% (not 98%) is going to choose the "red hammer" simply because it's the most common combination. Some large number is going to choose just red or just hammer, getting a "close" answer. Those who guess correctly, forward the message, those who don't discard it. Thus, then you get the message it has a long history of "right" guesses making you believe that there is something to it. But in reality is just a rule of big numbers.

A message constructed for a "violet allen key" would be a lot more interesting, but it's not possible.

I picked a red hammer, and was quite stunned when I scrolled down to see 'red hammer'. But I think if you just simply asked someone to think of a color and a tool in general, you'd get the same response as you would without the math equations.
