Fan noise

I have a four inch intake fan and its a bit noisy how can i silence it, would it be safe to put it into a box of some sort or would that make it overheat.:)
Or is it the air coming in through air ducting making the noise. :(

It's a combination of things that make a fan noisy, if it's touching anything hard that it can vibrate through can add to the noise, a lot of bends in your ducting dosn't help either. You can buy silencers, acoustic ducting and fan controllers which all reduce noise.

I wouldn't keep the fan inside a box for the reason that you stated, but Hudson listed three nice alternatives. My Vortex is hanging from flexible bungee cords, which is MUCH quieter than the metal hooks that were provided. Some people use speed controllers like potentiometers and rheostats to control the fan speed, but from what I've read, this can potentially be a fire hazard. The bungee cords work really well, so give that a shot if you're able to.

The intake fan is above my bedroom and its pissing me off.

Using rubber washers anywhere you have bolts or screws will hep as well. If you use a bracket to mount, cut a piece of bicycle tube and put it between the bracket and the surface, it will cusion vibration.
