WASHINGTON - Democratic Rep. John Murtha said Wednesday that Republican Sen. John McCain is too old to be president.

Murtha is 75, four years older than McCain. He says they are nearly the same age, and the rigors and stress of running the country is too much for guys their age.

"I've served with seven presidents," Murtha told a union audience. "When they come in, they all make mistakes. They all get older."

"This one guy running is about as old as me," he said, drawing laughter and applause. "Let me tell you something, it's no old man's job."

If elected, McCain would be the oldest man to become president at age 72. Ronald Reagan became president at age 69, but he served as president for eight years and was just a few weeks shy of his 78th birthday when he left office.

Murtha, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, made the comments while introducing the candidate he has endorsed, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, to the AFL-CIO's Building Trades National Legislative Conference.

Clinton referred to Murtha's introduction when she took the stage, saying she was grateful to have his endorsement and agreed with his sentiment that it will be difficult to turn around all the damage of the Bush administration. She didn't mention his comments on McCain's age, and the campaign sought to distance itself from the comments.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said Clinton "considers Senator McCain a friend, and she respects him. But it's not his age she has a problem with, its his ideas for the future."

Earlier this week, McCain was asked about his age and he joked about it, at first feigning sleep.

"Watch me campaign. We keep a heavier schedule. We campaign harder," he said Monday during The Associated Press annual meeting. "People will judge me by my performance. I am confident that my energy, my intellect, my experience, and my judgment is what American people will â?? hopefully that they will view me as qualified to be president of the United States."

His campaign said Wednesday Murtha's comments were "nonsense attacks."

I honestly wonder if the Dems really want to hold the Whitehouse. This is just the way to turn off the senior voters. LOL.....they basically just lost the state of Florida.

Have a good one!:s4:

LOL, I was going to say that this was definitely a case of the pot calling the kettle black. That fat bastard is just jealous that McCain is a healthy old bastard, while Murtha is slated to die any day from being such a portly SOB, and being old as dirt.

Hasn't Mccain had like 4 heart attacks and other serious health ailments. I'm starting to believe that he may just be immortal. While I wouldn't call him healthy; it would seem that Death just can't sink his scythe into John McCain. lol

Hmm... you know what, I'm not really sure. I thought McCain was in pretty good health, and don't recall of him having any major health issues. He's certainly getting older, but seems to be in pretty good health. Sure you're not mistaking his ailments for Dick Cheney? He's had more heart attacks than I can remember. And, didn't that hunting buddy of his (who Cheney accidentally shot) have a heart attack? If anyone is going to buck the kicket with heart problems, I think it would be him.

It's almost too easy to get politicians confused, there's no ignorance required! It's guaranteed to happen if you follow politics long enough.

Uck! Murtha!

As a Pennsylvanian I am SEVERELY pissed off that this guy is in office. It seems my state got stuck with the crappiest politicians ever. Like Arlen Specter, Murtha, Ed Rendel just to name a few. Murtha is the biggest pork barreled spender in the whole fucking nation! He blows constant tax payers money on his own little lobbyist and personal agenda projects.

The man should be tarred and feathered for treason.

I don't worry about McCains age in the least. I'm glad he's older, more experience. Besides, he may just pick a decent vice president.

The heart attacks were Cheney's --- he has about 5 a day, but he is kept alive by the secret nanobots in his bloodstream and the Dark Side of the Force.

McCain's problem is cancer and old age. He was diagnosed with melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer in 2000. He had several deadly tumors removed from his face at that time. You can see the scars and peristant puffiness on his left cheek where they cut out the lessions.

He's an old man. If he were to win, he'd be 72 going into office. And if he won two terms he'd be 80. Some people do fine at that age, but some don't. I remember Reagan testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings and answering "I don't recall" to every question. I thought he was just covering up, but he probably already had Alzheimers at that time --- it's what he eventually died of, and it was probalby already affecting his thinking when he was in office.

The presidency eats people up. Look at pictures of Bush and Clinton going into office and comng out. It ages you more than mormal in each 4-year term. Does McCain look like he can afford much aging?

He better pick a damn qualified VP, because there is a decent chance of him dying in office if he is elected.
