Ok so my friend let me borrow his water pipe and it was a nice big one that cost him 80 bucks. Well needless to say my brother and I accidently broke it but it was all good because only the top part broke off and it was a very clear cut so there wasn't a million tiny pieces. So it was easily fixable but unfortunatly this was right before I embarked on my journey to college so I didn't have time to fix it because I had to hit the road so I left the piece there and we gave him 40 bucks instead of 80. I'm really poor and I really couldn't afford to pay him back the full price and anyway its not like he couldn't easily fix it with some super glue. So if he did that then he would have 40 bucks to be able to buy something new and still have his old one as well. Sounds like a pretty good deal right? Well he was infuriated because we had left not paying him back the full price and he ended up throwing out a perfectly good water pipe. It pissed me off that he was mad about it because for one thing its not as if he even paid for it because the dude has rich parents who paid for it inadvertently. So anyway was I a douche bag for not just giving him the full refund or was he just an idiot for not just simply fixing it and then buy a new one?

Thought you said he was a friend i would hate to see how you would treat you enemy's, think about it he was good to lend it to you in the first place, i dont think the fact that his parents are rich has anything to do with it. :)

You should have paid him the full amount that it cost to replace it with a new one. There is no excuse not to.

Maybe im old fashioned, but if you have the trustworthyness and friendship to lend someone an $80 anything and it gets broken, i would be pretty pissed if someone just said "I broke you bong, heres half of what it originally cost". I honestly dont think bongs really deteriate in value if they still work like day one
So, IMHO, yea thats was kinda bad to do, but if your tight on money, sometimes you gotta be a tight ass :D

It's not for you to decide if he's got the cash to replace it, or if he even SHOULD. He lent you an unbroken, working bong. You returned a broken bong and half its cost. Come ON. If you don't already know that was the wrong thing to do, you've got bigger problems.

He could have at least said, "Here's 40 bucks, it's all I have right now, but I'll send you the rest in the mail as soon as I can."

I read your prediciment and was reminded of a scene from Forrest Gump, I believe it goes like this

"Woah man you just stepped in a huge pile of shit!"
' It happens'
"what? shit?"
' sometimes'

You owe him 40 bucks and an apology. But he is also an idiot for throwing it out and not fixing it. Maybe if you had given him the full amount, you could have asked to have the broken one if he didn't want it anymore, and then you would have had a decent fixed bong and he would have an unbroken one like what he loaned you.

Movies are like a box of chocolates --- they cost a lot, and sometimes you bite into one you'd like to spit out.

Dude you broke the guys bong.. I'd be pissed too if you broke my bong and handed me half the money its worth back..

You need to phone your friend and apoligize, tell him you'll pay back the other $40 once you'v got some money..

Its not worth fallen out over a bong, your in the wrong so now you need to fix it..

Peace

If you had $40 why didnt you just buy your own one?

yeah but guys I mean come on....like I could understand if I shattered it into a million pieces or if I broke it in a way that couldn't be fixed but literally all that needed to be done was put a little bit of super glue on it and it would be good as new. I just feel its stupid to give him that much money so he could fix it up and still use it...then he'd have 80 bucks and a good bong. I should probably also mention that it was the very top part of the bong that broke not the bottom part so theoretically you wouldn't even have to glue it back together just to use it. I would just look more asethetically pleasing.

dude, you don't understand, he deserved a brand new bong, you could've kept the one you broke and used it yourself, then he'd have no problem and everyone's happy, if ya use other people's stuff and break it...you should replace it. obviously you feel bad about it and realize you were wrong or you wouldn't be asking everyone's opinion.

Dude, I dont know about you but my parents taught me to return things in the same, if not BETTER condition than they were loaned to me in. How is giving him a broken bong and $40 fair? I would be PISSED at that gesture.

I can honestly say that if I have ever damaged someones good, I have either replaced it, or given them full replacement value. I would except nothing less than the same in return.

Its not up to you to decide if he deserves a new one. Its not up to you to judge where he gets his money. You fucked his shit up, and its up to you to fix it. No exceptions.

Bad stoner.

but thats the thing I didn't mess it up. Its like replacing someones CD because you accidently got a little scratch on so everytime you play track 4 for at least ten seconds it skips or something. In fact that situation would be worse because its permanent damage. The bong would have worked 100 percent exactly as if it never broke in the first place. If I had time I probably would have just glued it myself and not even told him because that way he nor anyone else would have even found out. I mean I just don't see the sense in paying 80 dollars for something that would cost 3 dollars to repair and work exactly the same way. Btw this is something that happened years ago I was just reflecting on it and thinking how dumb my friend was for being so anal about it. I've broken things that I borrowed from people before and everytime I did I always replaced it but this is one of those rare exceptions where its neither black or white but rather in the grayish area. If it needed to be replaced I would have replaced it regardless of my income but under absolutely no doubt did it need to.
