View Full Version : Enough closet space?

This is an illustration of the closet measurements.
As you can see in the crappy photos, the roof slants down at an angle.
My questions are:
1)With the closet cleaned and empty...is there enough room to harvest a few plants at a time *veg*+*flowering*?
2)How can I control the temperature/humidity, without adding any holes in the walls?
3)Do I just need to go ahead and make a grow cabinet to fit the size of the room? (If I need to install aircontrol and stuff into the walls....I will have to make a cabinet because I cant make holes in these walls for personal reasons.)
P.S.
LOL @ the MSPaint design of my closet :)

1)Yes
2)Desk fan
3)Probably- Is smell going to be a problem? I would recommend building a grow cabinet and putting it under the window so that air can be extracted out of the building through let's say 4" metal dryer piping.
Also check out this link for some scrog-based closet inspiration International Cannagraphic Magazine Forums - 400W HPS Scrog - 1Plant - 450gr Harvest (http://icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=12653)
Good luck and I wish you success with your grow.

#1 and #2....Putting a fan in there to keep the air moving wont really cool anything. I'm just afraid it will get to hot in the closet during the summer. I want to be able to keep the temperature under control, and humidity.
Would it be easier to grow in the closet with it bare, or build a scrog inside the closet? Which would cost more, considering that I would have to most likely buy something to cool the closet, and a dehumidifier to control RH?
I like the scrog idea, but do not know much about it.
P.S.
On the right side of the closet, there is a fist size hole where someone has punched the wall. I was wondering how good of an idea would it be to use that hole to fit an exhaust extension leading into that?

After reading about 1plant SCROG setup, I think I may just want to do that method of growing.
It seems simple and looks beautiful. It also seems like a good idea because the plant will be grown in a cabinet like enviornment, also being contained in a closet, so the smell should be no problem right?
I just do not know what to expect trying to grow Top44 inside there.
Also, I would really like to start construction on the scrog setup a.s.a.p. so how can I build one that is nice and cost friendly? (i've been searching)

You are right, a fan won't actually lower room temperature. So what, were you planning to turn the closet into one giant fridge?
The way I see it, who needs to worry about temp and humidity, as long as nothing catches on fire! This is not some big time operation where such details might have a big impact on total yield (others care to disagree?). The main thing here is that you get yourself an HPS (high pressure sodium) lamp - no flourescents! I would say absolutley no more than a 400W, perhaps even a 150W HPS will be sufficient for that space. Also, don't bother with hydroponics - waste of time + money if you ask me.
So that hole in the wall, does it go directly outside? If so that sounds like your best bet for extraction. If not then I recommend reading this link http://boards.cannabis.com/growroom-setup/90173-how-carbon-filter.html which shows you how to build a device to erase the weed smell.
So my advice to you is do your homework but keep things simple. The main two priorities with any indoor grow are that it's air-tight and light-proof. Theres no need to build a box for the closet if you treat your closet like you would a box.
Thats pretty much all I have to say for now, I am an electrician, only one year older than yourself, but living in the UK, so if you have any electrical related questions let me know.
I couldn't help wondering, which strain do you plan on growing?

Top 44, the hole leads into my upper attic. I dont want to lead it there if the smell would seep to the lower rooms of the house.
I think I would rather seal the closet, because that seems cheaper than building a scrog.
I found a local 400w HPS light with an extra bulb for $125, nothing under that though...so I think I'm gonna just buy that light.
So, if I staple some foam around the door seems and add a fan in there with the 400wHPS light, and maintain the leaves with carbonated water for CO2, I dont need to worry about the temp and humidity?
I figured I would atleast maybe need a dehumidifier, just incase the light makes some heat, or the weather is humid outside.

You need to be concerned about cooling with a 400 watt hps in a closet, especially if you're wanting to seal it.
You didn't mention an air cooled reflector and I know even a cool tube costs about $85 cheapest store bought so it's not included in that $125 cost.
You also need fresh air from the outside. Carbonated water isn't going to cut it.
General rule of thumb is that you need to spend at least as much money on ventilation as you do on the lighting.
Personally if you could air cooled hoods I think you should spend more on cooling than you do on lights but that's just my opinion.
Happy growing

to be serious, to cool and dehumidify all at once you need a room A/C unit that goes in the window, put that thing on a table let the water drip on a plant.
whaa lah! you have a water drip, a de humidifier, and a cooling system!

does this actually work? I was thinking about doing that.. but I found a ventless a/c unit that doesnt require exhaust ducting.

I am 99% positive he is joking. You don't want to do this.

LOL he did say to be serious..
and i dont know maybe because I was stoned I thought for a second it could work. Not the watering the plant part but the putting a window unit in a sealed room.

Nah.. if you got one of the ones with the exhaust it would heat up the room more than it would cool it.
They do make portable A/C units that could probably be put into your room with your plants.

Crap!!!
What am I supposed to do? What if I went with a lower watt bulb? I could just save a buy a new 250wHPS light rather than the used 400w light :/. Would that solve any heating issues? I just need a bulb that can do a nice job growing Top44.
I can't drill out a slot for any ACunit in that closet, so something cooling the room has to be portable I guess.

Regardless of what light you use you're going to need cooling. It's just a matter of how much cooling you'll need.
Cooling is pretty much the same between 250w - 400w setups.

Well, what alternatives are there to using a Window AC unit, because a window ac unit would require me to cut thru the wall and mount it in the designated spot.
Is there any alternative?
---PRETENDING---
Say I did get a AC unit, cut out the slot, add support for it on the other side(making sure it wont fall thru). What would this take care of? Would this take care of my temperature control, and humidity? Would I still need to let in new/fresh air in the closet every so often?

Will a portable Tili AC unit work? $200

yes it will work but it probably still needs somewhere for the exhaust duct to go. I did find one A/C unit online that requires no exhaust but I dont think this is the one.

fuckin perfect! i can run the exhause thru the whole that is already in the wall from a fist. will that smell affect a house if it is running into the attic?

my spelling was horrible on the last post! couple big rips out of my friends bong got me blazed.
running the exhaust to the hole in the closet, which would flow out into my attic. Would it be pulling the strong smell of dank with it?
