View Full Version : Bubblelicious and Blueberry first grow

Quick summary - so I dont ramble too much.
Ordered 10 bubblelicious seeds from Nirvana - and 1 (haha) feminised blueberry seed. Bubblelicious seeds germinated on 3/20, and the blueberry germed 3/29. Using scotts seed starter mix in small pots for now, the Blueberry is in the party cup.
I'm gonna try to add some pics, we'll see if they show up.
Do you guys notice a weird greyish color or am I just freaking out???
I should add that I'm using a T5 setup with 10,000 lumens, and its about 3-4" from the plants. Temps are about 82-85 degrees, and I'm on 24/0. I'll post some pics of my setup here in a couple minutes.

Try to get your temps down about 5 degrees if you can. That greying might be strain related. The plants in the orange pots look great so far. Nice carpet. I had the same stuff in my living room, but in 'harvest gold'. :D Mmmm 70s textured short shag... mmm

Here's my growbox. Its kinda ghetto for now, I've already dumped a lot of money into it, and I'm kinda tapped out for the moment.
I have panda film or whatever u call it lining the inside of the box. The larger fan is my exhaust and the smaller fan mounted outside the box is my intake. And yes, there's only 3 screws holding it in instead of 4. I also have that little metal fan that I bought from target for 7 bucks thats blowing on the plants. The back of that fan feels warm though, and I'm suspicious that its just adding more heat. Any thoughts?
And also - my girlfriend and I still have some of our clothes in the closet, so dont mind the high heels and pink robes - I swear I'm not a cross-dresser :D :D

Yeah, I'm brainstorming on the temps. During the day though, when I run my A/C unit that is in the living room and leave the closet doors open the temps stay below 82. At night though it seems to be warmer because I can't really justify running my A/C 24/7.
Yeah, gotta love the carpet. My apartment is all about the 70's. Thats LA county for ya, everything is so old!

is it possible to put a fan as big as your exhaust or slightly smaller?(flowing as many cfm's as your exhaust fan... Not anything higher though).
You could probably lower your temps if you equalized the air flow in this particular situation since your grow space is kind of small.
Good luck.

Maybe, I'm not sure though. Do you think adding a passive intake would help?
Thanks for stoppin by

well you already have an intake.. I think adding another fan or equalizing the air flow would help.
How big is the exhaust fan? Do you have a pic of it?
bombdiggity
03-31-2008, 02:56 PM
pic one is the exhaust
pic two is the intake, which is mounted outside the box.
pic three is a view of the intake fan from outside the box.
Exhaust fan measures 4 1/2", intake fan is 3 1/4"
not sure of the cfm rating on the exhaust
intake is rated at 31CFM.

The 70's were awesome. I wish I hadn't of been zero years old and caught more than the last few months tail end of it.. lol
I'm all about 70's stuff too.. really all retro stuff.

the exhaust fan is on the left wall of the box, you can kinda see it in one of the pictures.
Exhaust fan measures 4 1/2", intake fan is 3 1/4"
not sure of the cfm rating on the exhaust
intake is rated at 31CFM.
That looks like a 120mm computer fan. Probably anywhere from 91-141cfm.
Look up Honeywell Turbo fan. I'd say it's about 9" in diameter but would probably work well in your room for both intake/exhaust.. and fully adjustable.
If you can find a smaller similar fan then those would probably be better for your particular space. Something more like 7" or so.

blah. thanks alot for your advice but I really dont think I'm ready to modify the box that much, again. I think I'm going to order another intake fan, same one that I have and just put it right next to it.
Also I never completely cut out my hole for the intake, so I'll go do that now and maybe it'll help a little
temps are 81.7 right now, but I guess thats just cuz its early and still cool in my apartment.

If your intake fan is not moving as much air as the exhaust, it's REDUCING efficiency. You'd be better off using BOTH fans in your exhaust and opening the intake to make it passive, while still allowing no light leaks.
I dig the retro stuff big time. My living room is all done up in Tiki Lounge Stylee. It's crap-tacular.

Just wanted to add for the no light leaks... you can get louvered vents from home depot that are perfect for helping to block light leaks from outside the cabinet.
I have alot of authentic Mid Century Modern stuff in my place. Talk about expensive. That stuff really get's pricey, but I love the way it looks. I feel like my house should feel like I'm on vacation when I come inside from a long day at the office. So I spare no expense (within my means) on retro stuff.
It makes me feel warm and happy inside. I think I was born in the wrong era :hippy:

Just to make sure you mean to turn my intake fan around and use it as exhaust as well as my current exhaust fan? if I do that how big would my intake hole have to be for that to work?

I've got a couple lamps and a very sweet daybed, but not enough to do an entire room quite yet. That's coming one of these days. Especially since IKEA knockoffs can fill in the missing pieces until I scavenge some real stuff. My attorney has a SICK collection at his office including some Saarinen pieces... lol... he's kinda hot too. Makes the business at hand less depressing.
You gotta post up pics. All mine is in storage until I finish renovating my house :(

That's a good question for someone who paid attention in physics class, lol. The key is to minimize how restrictive of air flow it is. You could just lose the active intake fan entirely and see if your temps stay in range with just the hole. The body of the fan itself blocks air flow.
bombdiggity
03-31-2008, 10:08 PM
Yeah, i just recently put that active fan in, and originally had a passive intake. If you look right next to my intake fan you see a little patch of black plastic, thats where I covered up my previous passive intake.
So, should I just uncover that hole and keep my intake fan?
Sorry if I'm having trouble understanding this - but I assure you I'm trying to hardest

My camera is sort've on the fritz (I dropped it. I'm horrible with handling digi's. Never let me handle a camera or it'll be it's doom)
I'll get some pic links of what I have and post it up in a thread in cannabis lounge (so we don't whore this guys thread) for you just so you can check out some pieces I've bought over time.
Luckily for me I live in a very "indie" part of town and there are so many thrift shops I can go to. Some of the stuff I've bought is fully restored and some of it was done by me (very shoddily).
I wish my attorney was a hot female. Instead my attorney looks like he could be a stunt double for Gimili from Lord of the rings, but my god he's an amazing lawyer. A good lawyer is worth his weight in gold, unfortunately for me my lawyer is very heavy. ;)

Big changes to the grow box!!
Transplanted the 4 older plants (bubblelicious) to new larger pots, with new soil (a mix that my hydro store makes), and FoxFarm Grow Big 6-4-4. Transplanting was such a pain in the ass, I wish I had just planted in these pots to begin with.
So I gave them 1/2 tsp / gallon at time of transplant, because I have no rooting hormone or superthrive like suggested in the threads I read. Hopefully this is okay. Any thoughts?
Here are some pics about 2 hours after transplant. I coated the top of the soil with perlite for light reflection and moisture control. They seem to be pretty happy for now, except for one of them.
bombdiggity
04-01-2008, 10:08 PM
So i came home from work today and noticed that the perlite that I have layering the top of the soil looks like its turning yellowish. Is this normal? Maybe its from the nutes?
I liked the nice clean-white finish it had :(

04-01-2008, 10:11 PM
you're doing well, stay on top of it ... lay off the nutes for a few days, when you transplant, and don't water as much ... that will encourage the roots to seek out moisture and food, (plus, some nutrients slow rooting, in favor of other needs) ... looks like you keep a nice clean area, too (not like my usual mess) jealousy :D
bombdiggity
04-01-2008, 10:21 PM
thx man - yeah i think i jumped the gun a bit on the nutes but i only gave them 1/2 tsp to the gallon and I used half a gallon for 4 plants. Here's a couple pictures :D
PS. Thanks for understanding the rep situation
Pic 1) Some kush I picked up last night
2) My normal after work routine :)
3) Updated pic of plant after transplant.. looks the same
4) Perlite discoloration?

4) Perlite discoloration?
It's getting stained from the soil. It's common for perlite to turn yellow, orange, or brown.

04-02-2008, 01:42 PM
Perlite can get algae on it too but that's also nothing to really worry about. Your plants look great. Transplanting may be a pain, but you get enough benefits from 'refreshing' the soil every month or 2 to make it totally worthwhile- read the thread in the FAQs for more info.
Daihashi, you made my sig. lol. Attorney worth his weight in gold. heh heh.

Is it a bad idea to wait for the plant to show me that it needs water before I actually water it? I plan on giving it just water with no nutes for the next 2 times, and then starting again with the GrowBig.

Got a quick update for anyone who cares
I've got 3 healthy plants, and 1 thats got yellowing on the bottom leaves.. but other than that its healthy. The upper leaves on the plant are fine, but the lower ones are yellowing and kinda crispy feeling. I gave them just water since the last post, I think I've watered twice. Do you guys think its time to throw in some nutes? I have GrowBig.
Here's some pics.

No give the plants at least 3-4 weeks or until alternating nodes appear. Which ever happens first

hmmm well in that case maybe I would just wait till flower to give them nutes.. I want to keep them short so I was going to flower as early as possible.

04-07-2008, 06:34 AM
Plants are starting to smell already. Shit!
Started nutes today. Gonna feed with GrowBig every 2/3 feedings with 1/3 being straight water. I've read that some people use the GrowBig along with the BigBloom and TigerBloom even during veg, is this correct? If so I might go to my hydro store and pick up the bloom parts.

Should I fill the pots the rest of the way with perlite, since it has compacted since I transplanted? I originally had them filled almost to the brim, but I guess from watering the soil has sunk down a bit. Will roots grow into the perlite?

Great! Thanks to whoever moved my thread, and thanks for the comments guys! I'll post some pictures tomorrow, I did a FIM today (haha) chopped off a branch accidentally. I left the other 3 alone. I also transplanted the blueberry seedling. Hopefully I can finish the plants in these pots, the hydro store guy said I should be able to but he did mention something about having to adjust nutes to compensate for the rootbound.

I might guess that the Blueberry requires less nutes, that's what little I've read about it.
I've grown lots of Bubblegum (Bubblicious) and that strain can take pretty strong nutes (although, I reached that point with my present grow, including the yellowing leaves. I flushed the pots and continued without the strong nutes, the plants came right back.
I am going to try and get some Blueberry seeds for my next grow.

Only down part about it is the smell is real strong, so Id get a good ventalation set up..
Apart from that its all good, especially the smoke and taste...

thanks Shovel! As far as the Blueberry goes, I have given it 0 nutes, and as far as I know the soil I have does not have any added nutes either. Not sure whats goin on there, but I did transplant a few days ago so maybe its still recovering from that.
Thanks for stopping by and giving advice! Dont be stranger :pimp:

Bomb is the trainer. So however you picture how your plant should look dictates how you train it. As the plant flowers you will want to continue to train the plant to expose the maximum foliage to the light source.

damm they look real nice.
why thank you! i'm almost scared because things are going so smoothly for me on my first grow. I guess its still early but I feel blessed that I'm not dealing with very many problems lately.
I re-did my passive intake. I used 4" duct, about 24" of it and snaked it in a S shape to trap light. I think I still might have to cover it with panda film, gonna have to wait till tonight to see if its actually light proof. The good news is though this lowered my temps to 76-77 with my room temp being 75.5. I'm fuckin stoked about that and now I can get my lights much closer to my plants. Temps were about 82-86 before.
Now I just need to figure out a way to lightproof my exhaust, which is just a computer fan and I think its slightly larger than 4". I might just try attaching the duct to the outside of my box around the fan - centered as much as possible and see how it goes. So right now other than my duct my box is 98% air tight.
YES! :D:D:D:D:D
(Will post pics late tonight my girlfriend has the cam right now)

Well I managed to duct tape my exhaust duct to the outside of the computer fan, and my temps are still below 80 so all is well! I'm concerned though, because a little bit of light can be seen coming out of the ducts, both the intake and the exhaust - I even have it bent in 2 90' angles. Any suggestions??

Hey, plants look great. Looks to me like it's not showing sex yet and shouldn't until you induce flowering (12/12). I have some plants that are about a week older and I'll try to post some pics to give you an idea of what to look for.

i always wait to flower till i see pre-flowers....look for a little ball/hershey kiss shaped thing where your branches go off the main stem...while you may not get actual sex, you will get pre-flowers in veg...I never call a sex till i see pistils, or nuts, and sometimes females will look like males when you only have a few on there.
so wait for white hairs (pistils) coming out of the hershey kiss(calyx) or a little grape looking cluster (nuts, balls,...dude)
good luck!

Well I'm going away for 3 days for a b-day trip with my girlfriend. We're gonna go see the kottonmouth kings show tomorrow (4/20) and we have a hotel room near the show. Gonna be so fun!!!! I'm gonna raise my light up a couple inches and tie them down real good to make sure they dont grow into the light while I'm gone. A heavy feeding right before we leave and they should be good to go.

Thanks WT! Its crazy how that main stem grew horizontal like that. It seems like thats as long as the main stem will get, where I topped it its now just splitting into 2-3 smaller stems. I'm starting to run out of places / ways to tie down all these new "main" stems. I feel like the plant is suffocating itself!

thanks greenatik! That LST u have looks nice too, I wish I had started that way I need more vertical clearance in my grow. My main stem is FIM'd so I could only keep it growing horizontal till the end of the main stem, then it just starts branching off everywhere like crazy.
I'm so fucking glad that I have atleast 1 female bubblelicious. I was really afraid that when I threw those other 3 out that it was quite possible I was throwing my only females out. The blueberry is feminised so I shouldn't have to worry about that one - but its not quite mature enough to show sex yet so we shall see.

I keep feeding my plants vegging nutes for 1-2 weeks into flowering (depends on strain) then start my bloom nutes after that. My plants seem to like that more, instead of the light/nute changes once I switch to 12/12. Gives the girls an easier time to adjust to the flowering schedule

Yes, the plant has male parts. I would get rid of it immediately. Even if you use that hermi to breed with mostly all of the offspring will hermie. Believe me I had a hermied afghani #1 and pollinated a white russian female, I planted 6 seeds and they all hermied except 1. But besides all that, very nice grow.:rastasmoke:

word thanks cede.. i was thinking about the screen idea but at this point I'm just gonna try to let them finish. I've been tying them down so much every other day and I'm getting tired of it - as I'm sure they are too. I'm going to screw my light fixture to the top of my box and just let them grow. Should be plenty of space. Doing that should give them about 12-16" more to grow vertically before they come dangerously too close to the light.

Nutes: Been using AgeOld Bloom at 2tsp / Gal every other watering. Waterings take place every 2-3 days. During veg I used GrowBig at 1tbsp / Gal, and used plain water every 3rd feeding.
Light: Still using ONLY my 2' T5 setup with 2 3000k bulbs putting out 10,000 lumens, while using 110W of power.
Vent: I will be installing my 4" vortex tomorrow (when it arrives), but up to this point I have been using a 120mm computer fan for exhaust, duct taped to 4" ducting.

I'm going to just use this light setup for this grow - to see how it can do. 10k lumens is theoretically enough for my 2'x1'x3' cabinet. (WxDxH)
The buds are growing fast and big too
Oh and the BB.. yeah I probably should transplant into one of my square pots but I'm so afraid to shock it during flowering. I was thinking about finishing it in that container as it was pretty small when flipped to 12/12.

I finally got mine yesterday and spent about 4 hours redoing my exhaust and intake ducts, and permanently installing my carbon filter. I have it at the end of my exhaust line and its working great! Yesterday my temp maxed at like 78, and my house temp was 75. Finally no more prepping for dark cycles every day.
Also I transplanted the blueberry - it was starting to look horribly rootbound. After about 10 hours of light it was looking better already - I cant wait to see how its doing after last nights dark cycle.

Day 24 of Flowering. If you're just joining us, the larger plant is "Bubblelicious" from Nirvana, and the smaller plant is "Blueberry" from (i think) dutch passion.
Feeding has remained the same. Any nute burn you see is from veg.
Trichs have started appearing everywhere. When you touch the buds and smell your fingers, it smells sweet and fruity, but not really anything like bubblegum as claimed by the breeder.

try bamboo skewers (just from the grocery store) they work well to hold leaves where you want them.
Im no expert for sure , but I just chopped some leaves on mine early last week, just to move more air through the canopy and expose more sites,
I know JGarcia2007 chops almost all his, and his results were amazing, but his plants were all so a lot larger...

Hy anbesol thanks for following along.
I have the 2' 2 Bulb T5 System from HTG... got it for $69.95, and yeah I'm using the 3000k bulbs for flower. About a week before I flipped to 12/12 I was using one grow and one bloom bulb, then switched to two blooms. I'm really happy with the performance, considering the price and power usage. My buds on the top seem firm frosty, and I'm only in my 5th week. During veg I had like no stretch. Anyone who wants to talk trash about t5's can just browse though this log and see how well they do perform - atleast in small confined areas.
I will take pictures in about 30 minutes - gotta eat first!

T-5 HOs and other high output flo tubes can really perform. Stuff enough of them in a space and anything can happen. They have very good efficiency numbers (90% to CFLs 65%) the trick is getting all the light near all the grow. Every inch of tube should have vegitation within 2-3 inches. Probably perfect for scrog.

Last day of Week 5. I need to get a microscope :wtf::wtf::wtf:
Its been getting hot here recently but temps are staying relatively low in the grow cab. I haven't seen it go above 83F since I installed my vortex. And despite the cheap carbon scrubber I have, there is no smell coming out of my cabinet. I do, however, smell the carbon filter a little bit. Smells a little musty.

How Much Longer do You think?
bombdiggity
06-03-2008, 02:34 PM
2-3 weeks on the bubble, 3-4 weeks on the blueberry.
I'm going to feed nutes only 1 more time to the bubble, then straight water till finish. I'll probably give the blueberry nutes 2 or 3 more times.

Day 38 12/12
I stripped the lower growth on the blueberry, it wasn't doing anything and honestly it looked pitiful. I know this will probably decrease my yield, stress the plant, blah blah, but I did it like 3 days ago and haven't noticed a single sign of stress. They are really starting to put on weight, especially the bubble.

and thanks shov for clearing that up for me, I was really worried that I might have stressed the plant to be a tranny.
although I am satisfied with this T5 setup, I would love to see the results if I switched it with a 150w HPS. Also, I would like to know if there is a difference in heat between my 110W T5 and the 150W HPS.

Yea I do image that going to HID would add a bit of heat, those things are HOT. but you could always add another small fan blowing between the plants and the light , directly towords and exhaust port, and you'd be totaly fine.
They look good man, nice fat buds always do...
I think Im going to give mine a bit of a hair cut this weekend too ( im the same as you , about 40 days flowering )

yeah, i've noticed dramatic bud growth on all those top buds ever since I trimmed the bottom stuff on the bubble (the larger one), and I just pruned the blueberry like 5 days ago I think so it might be still recovering, although it has put on a little weight.
I have another question.
Is there a way to tell when to harvest other than a microscope? Can I just harvest on the suggested day from the breeder?

first, the HPS is warmer than the t5 a small fan should do the trick if the ambient temp isn't over 72ยบ or so.
Second, a suggestion with the little microscopes. You can buy lithium batteries in AAA, which will give the best service. Otherwise the light gets dim very quickly and then the scope doesn't work for shtt. I discovered that using a mini flashlight with AA batteries (which I have plenty including rechargables) works great, even better than fresh batteries in the microscope. Lay the flashlight on a folded handkerchief or cloth on the table so it points right on the leaf you want to look at. Just use the scope with the flashlight. ramble ramble....

Bomb, I use a 30-100X mini-microscope and I usually use just 30X and see everything. The light on mine is not very bright, especially after using the batteries for a few minutes, so I use a little flashlight to shine more light on the leaves. I cut a little piece of leaf and lay it on a piece of white paper. I lay the flashlight down shining on the leaf and I can see things much better. I hope this can help you.
Good luck on your harvest. Don't be in too much of a hurry, let 'em ripen up good, man. I have the one hermie curing now so I'll have smoke for the 4th fosho. Today is day 60 (Sunday) and I will pick the rest on Tuesday.

The BG is doing pretty good, I haven't seen any noticable bud growth in a little while though. I have spotted a few amber trichs, but still mostly clear. The BB has a much better smell, and just flat out looks better. More calyx / leaf ratio, sooooo many trics, and an amazing smell. The BG is a monster for such a small pot / light. I must say I'm pretty satisfied with my first grow (knock on wood). I still probably have a week or so left.

I harvested about 25% of the BG yesterday, hung the buds for abouut 36-48 hours (they dried quick), and cured them overnight. I'm now smoking on my own homegrown.
I'm so excited about it. And the bud is really good too. Maybe a tad immature, but there was like 20% amber and alot clear, not too many cloudy. Seems like a weird ratio to me so I harvested just the branches that looked like that. The larger ones are still pluggin away and will be harvested soon.
BB is taking a little longer than expected, but should come around here any day now.

bombdiggity
06-26-2008, 02:34 PM
thanks man! I'm glad you were able to learn a few things.
the BB is AMAZING. Its not cured, just dried and it tastes and smells amazing. I just started curing last night so we'll see what happens. The smoke is extremely potent, keeps up with the local kush here in OC. I'd say its better but I think my opinion is biased
Yield on BB: 9~ grams or so
It was a tiny little one cola plant so I'm not suprised
The rest of the BG is still growing, the harvested part is OK. Doesn't compare to the BB, but is still decent.
I will post a final yield and smoke report in a week or so.
Thanks for reading :)

Here it is - THE FINAL HARVEST
This is the remainder of the BG plant. I already harvested about 10grams or so about a week ago. This looks like a little under an ounce, could be less. I'm happy with the yield, consider the light used, and space restrictions.

Buds finally dried and are now in jars. I dumped all of the bubblegum out of the jars for a final picture. I'm very happy with how this plant turned out. Its way more potent than the first batch that I harvested a couple weeks ago.
I'm guessing that I have just under an ounce here, and keep in mind I had already harvested about 10 grams on this same plant, and then let the plant go another 2 weeks.
Unfornately, I dont have a digital scale but I can "guestimate" that I got around 50g total. Not too shabby for 110W of T5, and two plants.

Blueberry Smoke Report: Taste is excellent, smell is fruity and spicy. Its like the really good shit that you got "that one day"... the stuff that you brag about having long after the bag you bought is gone. I hope that makes a little sense LOL. The high is great - very strong head-rush feeling that lasts like 20min followed by euphoric numbness for 2+ hours. I LOVE this strain and WILL be growing it again in the future.
Bubblegum Smoke Report: Taste is OK, smell is great when you break it up - but it hasn't been curing as long as the blueberry. The buds are way lighter than the blueberry bud was. The high, however, is amazing on this one. Its more sativa influenced than the blueberry, so you have that energetic buzz if you are up and moving, or if you are just chilling you have that couchlock goodness.
