New Rubbermaid Idea

Hi all, I'm completely new to growing but I've been doing a lot of reading here. I've decided to go with the rubbermaid tubs to start off with, but here's my idea for stealth and upgrading. Once I get some experience with my first grow using the rubbermaid tubs, I plan on modifying this cabinet with intake/exhaust holes and setting up the lighting. At first I'll just hide my tubs in the cabinet.

The cab measurements:
72" (H) x 36" (W) x 18" (D)

I was first considering a cheap ass particle board cabinet from ikea until I saw this baby. Its more sturdy and is even lockable.

Here's my plan so far:

- drill some holes in the upper back for wiring
- use a hole saw to create the intake and exhaust ports
- add the basic plumbing so that at least the inside portion is done
- add some hangers on the inside ceiling for future lighting
- mylar the entire inside
- hang some high quality plasit down the front that will be attached either with velcro or a zipper
- weather strip all cracks of the front doors of the cabinet including any gaps between the doors so that its airtight and light-tight.

I plan to put the cabinet up against the wall in my room with the left side of the cabinet about 4"-6" away from the corner of the room. That gab will allow me to hide the plumbing. The air intake will be an PVC elbow that points at an angle upward and towards the rear of the cabinet that I will install on the lower left side of the cabinet. I'll be able to hide it by putting something like a narrow trash can or some other object.

The exhaust will come out in the upper rear corner of the top of the cabinet and then connect to a carbon filter that will sit on some brackets. This will allow me to put something like a bottomless shoe box on top of the cabinet and nobody would be the wiser. The box would be cut out on the bottom and half of the left side and half of its rear.

I could probably do the same for the intake plumbing so that all the plumbing is well disguised. It would just look like I have a box sitting on top of the cabinet and a box sitting on the side in that crack.

Home depot sells brackets that you use for creating shelves like the one below. I will probably mount those to the rear interior of the cab. Add a wood plank and you have yourself an adjustable shelf that will move your plant as close to or as far away from the lighting fixtures as you want.

oh yeah, I wanted to mention some of my requirements so you understand why I've picked this certain cabinet.

I live in an apartment that is on the 2nd floor. I wanted something light enough to carry up the stairs myself. The shipping weight on this cab is 68 lbs. It takes about 20 mins to assemble so that sounds good to me.

Even though I'll be getting my medicinal card soon, I live in a place where the management company enters your place for BS reasons like checking air filters. I've lived here 2 years and the screws to my vent where the filter goes has the same paint over them from the day I moved in. You'd know if they ever changed the filter because they'd have to actually crack the paint when turning those screws. :rolleyes:

Anyways, I'll be able to either put this cab up against the wall like I planned if it isn't too noisy, otherwise, it'll fit nicely in my walk in closet.

looks good man. i like the idea with the movable shelves so you dont have to constantly move your lights around.

I live in an apartment too, with a nosey landlord. I wish I could have something as tall as yours, but I'm stuck with this 36" tall little cabinet that I literally have to hide in my bedroom closet, with all my clothes hanging above it.

Be thankful that you have more room :)

yeah apartment live stinks but here in CA, property is a premium. I'm glad I have a walk-in closet. Its about the size of 3 small closets.

If I have to, I'll keep the box that the cabinet comes in and cut cut out the back of it so that I can velcro the box to the cabinet so it looks like its still boxed up :-D

Ok, now I've got a new cab on my mind. This one looks easier to work with and less conspicuous:

could you even finish a plant in that 2nd cabinet? i dont think its big enough, believe me, ive looked at tons of those and know the dimensions well, if someone sees a big one, 4 deep, 4-5 wide and 6-7 tall, and lockable/modifyable, let me know!! anyway, yer first one looked better to me, 2nd would be ok fer veggin.

deaner, from everything I've read on this board lately, it sure can be done! There's plenty of threads on using rubbermaid tubs stacked on top of each other. All you need is some TLC and LST :thumbsup:

With your specs, you're looking at a shed. Maybe something like this:

I'm just looking to grow for my own personal use, not snoop dogg's personal use :D

The way I see it, any cabinet or shed is easy enough to modify as long as you have a drill and hole saws. Everything else should be easy to install. The hardest part is making something stealth. Odor and heat are my biggest concerns. If I didn't have to worry about odor, then I would just get a hydro hut or use my closet.
