Palace Theatre: New Haven, CT - "[For some people] it brings out the best in their genius. And man, I know people who smoke some pot and they can't do shit. So, I'm not down with addiction."
:mad:I thought we all agreed it wasn't addictive.

I dunno, I dont consider pot an addictive substance, but there are a lot of things out there that are addictive. From drugs to stealing to sex (my personal favorite ;) )

its not addicting. if you are one of those guys who can't do shit when you are high, then you shouldnt be smoking weed.

In my opinion its not addictive, its a thing that people like so they want to do it alot, and is automatically labeled as addiction :( ..btw that song was great :)

Now cannabis is not physically addictive like opium or alcohol... but it can certainly become very psychologically addictive. Studies have shown that and anyone in Marijuana Anonymous can tell you it first hand. Drugs that alter your mental state can be particularly addictive in that way. A person may start to depend on the substance for their enjoyment of life... that is the problem. You should see the benefits to being high, and the benefits to being sober... and be able to enjoy both in your life.
So I agree with Ben. It's the difference between use and abuse, between enjoyment and dependence. Enjoying something that promotes joy in your life, or peace, or fun, or expression, or whatever... that is wonderful. But depending on a substance for those feelings is a bad thing. You should be able to have similar feelings without weed, and just use the weed as a way to experience those feelings from a different angle... and in moderation at that. Moderation is the key. I'm not drawing a line and saying how much is abuse. Each person is unique and has to decide that for himself.

well, i would consider myself addicted on cannibis, but, i have it in check, it doesnt rule me, and while it allows me to have fun if im just sitting around that is in no means what i like to do, i will go out, and stay in the park all day, i will stimulate the economy by buying compulsivly large quantities of food. It is a way to enhance my uptime, and consume my downtime. It brings me closer to those who share, and i share as well, and has me valuing my money.

This is it exactly. I doubt Ben was talking about a clinical definition of addiction --- sounded to me like he was talking about when abuse starts to interfere with your life, not enhance it. I've known that to happen to a lot pf people who are not actually "addicted."

A great song from my fav. Ben Harper album... (Fight For Your Mind).. suprisingly enough that's like the weakest song on the album. Wanna hear a really great song check out "God Fearing Man" the last track from that album. The slidework he does in that song especially near the end is just wow.

No it isnt, I went cold turkey about a month and a half ago, because of alergies, and I didnt withdrwal or go into confulsions. I didnt become sick, or get crabby, or jones for a hit, I didnt even look back as far as I was conceerned I can barley breath and I am constantly sneezing, my eyes are watering and I got rash on my face, throght, and Im sure lungs. But so does everyone eles in my area who has the same alergies, not 1 or even 20 people but, over a hundred people in my area are heavely affected by the tree pollen here. And it is gonna get worse cause it ended yeasterday and due to cold temps and now warming temps a whole new tree polination has just begun. At least 2 more weeks of this shit, and I dont plan on smoking herb right after as I know I will still have the after effects, a week or 2 after its over. I have smoked every day all day for the past year and the year before that, the olny time I quit or stop is durring alergy season, and I have never had any kind of addictive symtoms.
Addictive.............. yeah right!..

Everyone's physiology is different, so there are rare cases where a person is actually physically addicted to weed. It's rare, but it does happen. And everyone's personality is different too, so some people become mentally dependent on it without having a physical addiction, while a lot of people have no mental dependency at all.
I've known a few people who had trouble when they quit. For some, it seemed like it was the disruption of their long routine, so it messed with their mental depenedncy for how they went about winding down their day. And others had some physical symptoms like irritability, and trouble sleeping. None of it was very severe or lasted very long, but it was real.
But still, I don't think that was what Ben Harper was even talking about. He was talking about people who let weed hold them back in some way. For some people it enhances their life, and for others it holds them back. Too bad he even used the word "addiction," because I think it just distracts from his real point.

I cant stand the part in that song where he says
"Pass it over to me my friend"
definately should be
"Pass it over to you my friend"
anyway, pots addictive man....no you aint gonna have seizures or get sick without it, but you might have a hard time gettin ur head straight...or maybe people smoke cause it cures boredom....doesnt matter....addictive in a lot of ways other than just physical

I like all of his music. He's incredible. The last song on Fight for your mind is "One road to freedom". Both are great songs. lol
as to the quote. i just think Ben isn't about getting high to get high and forgetting life's responsibilities.
Smoke it, enjoy it but reality is much more important...

i think it is addictive in the same way that people are addicted to fun, cause isnt that smoking is, when i wake up in the morning and say i wanna have fun today, i start with a bowl, and when i go to sleep at night and think i had fun today, i think about how full my bag was when i woke up.
the act of smoking is fun, it is fun to be around other people, it is fun to enjoy music, nature, and thinking on that level, it is fun.

^^ exaticaly and that is not a addiction that is people not knowing when to say when. You cant go to the Carnival everyday cause eventualy the carnival will suck then what. If a person cant say no I cant eat the whole cake then it is not the cakes fault is it? What ever I have heard this argument over and over and even from people that I respect such as Dr. Dru and I heavely dissagree. Mabey its just the fact I have seen first hand withdrwals that have killed people, I have been misserable with kidney stone pain and refused to take morphine oxycotten or hair-on, not being able to go to the carnival every day does not affect me. The walls dont have to be painted white in my world because in my head they are Red.
"he who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man"
p.s..........I didnt watch the ben harper vid, I dont know who he is or what he wants. But I was responding to the posts on the thread, my bad if it has nuthing to do with ben harper

Down here innn the deeep blue seaaaaaa.
finally someone understands where i got that from, i like the show to a degree, at one of my smoking buddies' apartment there is always someone there watching nickelodeon and spongebob is always on, the dad, mom, daughters and son all watch, and all but the youngest daughter smoke, and we all think it is funny. The best episode, the one where they play in the box was on today and i was crackin up after smoking a bowl of some seriously dank weed.
but i find that sometimes i like to have too much fun, in which case it is all the more funner.
