I am aware that in veg haveing my T5's close to the canopy is helpful in managing stretch.
In flower, should the HPS be close to the canopy or does it matter?
It's 6 inches from the tops right now and the girls are still stretching (I do expect the stretch in the first week).

An Indica or an aff, will stretch alot less that a sativa.. They will stop stretching in a week or so..... The HPS lamp should be at minimum 18 to 24 inches above the tops.. This will keep the tips of your buds from getting burned.. I am assuming you will be using a 400 or better HPS lamp?

light follows inverse square law: If you are 2X as far away from it, you receive 1/4 the light. thats why you want it close
approx measurements:
400w hps: 14-18 inches
600w: 16-20 inches
1000w 20-26 inches
these may vary by setup and plant type however, but its a general guide

you can only make the real huge buds if the plants are practically touching the light. solution! homemade cool tube my friend. :rastasmoke:

the way to tell if your getting to close is that the top buds will curl in the pistils and look very unappetizing, and sometimes the upper leaves will form "canoes".
if this happens, back off 2-3 inches
