I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of the benefits of smoking with matches instead of lighters. I have heard from a few people that it is better for you because of the lack of butane. I even heard that it tastes better and gets you higher. Anybody have any thoughts?

I often use matches, both by choice and b/c i cant find a lighter. If you make sure the head burns first, I find you can get a better taste. Idk about any health benefits though. I do know that one of the worst things about using a lighter is the little pieces of flit that flake off. 'parently its highly cancerous, so if you use a lighter, light first then put over the bowl.
ever used a magnifying glass??? thats the cleanest way to burn the herb

I have heard about the magnifying glass way, but never have tried. Sounds like I have to get on that. Thanks for the reply man, I really had no clue about the flint either.

LOL....yeah can you imagine sitting there trying to get the focal point juuuust right for each hit? haha that would take forever, and I know I feel blinded after using my 30x after a while.
I did however render a still valid credit card useless this way, for some reason I got 2 cards well one I designated for scraping. Since it was still valid and I trust nobody to take it, I put a wicked burnt trail on the black strip, it was cool to see the smoke :D:stoned:

it really doesnt take that long to do if you're in the sun

Well no it doesn't, but when the bowl is a couple inches from your face like in a pipe it wouldn't work too well. Maybe with a bong...

A bong is surely the best for sun rips with a magnefying glass.
I ALMOST ALWAYS use a magnefying glass to smoke.(only grade AAA buds,no swagg or mids)all connoisseurs know that sun rips are the cleanest, tastiest way to enjoy buds.I love smoking the Jack Herer I have right now with a megnefying glass, the smoke tastes really skunky yet lemony.

Sunlight smoking sounds amazing, on many levels. Never tried it.
Matches would, in theory, be slightly cleaner than butane lighters - I can't give a personal story to back that up but the logic seems to hold.

Are there any adverse effects from the sulfer? If not, or if it's not as unhealthy as butane, then matches would be better.
I'll have to get a magnifying glass sometime during the summer, although it's finally starting to warm up here.

Let the tip of the match burn off before you try and light ya's bowl. and it doesn't need to be warm, you just have to have lots of direct sunlight, wear sunglasses, and yes its much easier to use a bong

Heat wands? I tried a quick search and got nothing that looked like it was suitable to light up with. Do you have a link to what you're referring to?

works just like flyguy said, it's just so hot it ignites it. they were actually giving them out a while back if you bought the super vapezilla, since it was on backorder.

any idea why i get a different taste from bic and other pre-filled lighters than i do from zippos or other refillables? I know they are both butane so i dont understand why it tastes so different to me.

They may use different odorants for the butane. Butane is odorless, just like natural gas and propane, so they add chemicals to help you detect it. Bet they don't all taste good.

i would think it has something to do w/ the fact bics are under pressure. zippos are not. zippos suck for smoking herb...nasty

Matches should be fine after the sulphur has burned off, man has been inhaling wood smoke for millions of years. Matches are also just the right size for cleaning out the holes in cones.

The classic zippo doesn't use butane at all, it uses naptha and some other heavier petroleum distillates. Butane evaporates and disappears at atmospheric pressure, even if it's soaked into cotton. He specifically said butane zippo refillables so I assume he's not talking about those.. though I've never seen a butane zippo before. The oil filled zippos are going to taste bad because the fuel doesn't completely combust and you inhale some petroleum distillates with carbon monoxide and soot mixed in.

Back in the day, when I used to smoke fancy cigars pretty regularly, I was always told by cigar afficionados that fine cigars should never be lit by anything requiring lighter fluid. Preferably not Bic lighters, either, because they took too long to light and saturated the tobacco with unneeded butane. Matches were the best way to go in order to retain the rich flavor of the cigars when lighting up, and butane torches were second in line since they'd light them quicker.
I'm much more partial to pipes for my mj, so matches probably aren't the best idea for me most of the time. Anyway, I love mah mini-torch too much to let it go... plus, the damn thing cost me $100 from - yep, you guessed it - the cigar store!

I just threw up in my mouth a little thinking about early match hits, or Zippo bowl hits. Definitely tried the matches, but didn't let it burn long enough and YES it tasted like shiiiiiiiiiiiite. (dry heaves)
Zippo's always leave a flavor IMO... and it's not a good flavor.
Sun hits are like a spiritual thing... I would even chop a huge hole in my roof just so sun could rain in, they are that good.
Bic lighters are my daily drivers. Reliable... and way less sketchy than those Calico (?) see-through lighters. Freakin flint pops out of them biatches like rockets, and could take out an eye.
My advice: Light the Bic away from bowl, hold the flame near the outer perimeter of the bowl, and just try to get a small piece lit by the flame creeping over the edge of the bowl... then through continuing to pull air and finger manipulation you get the rest going. Limited lighter fluid residuals, and way more convenient than striking a match everytime. And IMO... the smell of matches just makes me think someone dropped a deuce in the bathroom.
