The time has come for New Jersey to join the 12 other states that allow seriously ill patients access to medical marijuana! Help make it happen by asking legislators to support the New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act.

Take action now.

In 2006, Drug Policy Alliance New Jersey launched the Compassion Use Campaign to advocate for the passage of medical marijuana legislation. The Campaign supports Senate Bill No. 119 and Assembly Bill No. 804, known as the ??New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act.? This important legislation would allow seriously ill patients access to medical marijuana with a doctor??s recommendation. Patients would register with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and receive registration cards indicating that they are legally allowed to use medical marijuana.

Drug Policy Alliance New Jersey continues to work hard to build our support coalition, educate legislators about medical marijuana, and advocate for consideration of the ??New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act,? but we need your help to rally support for the bills in the legislature. This means obtaining additional legislative sponsors in both the Senate and Assembly that can push the legislation forward. Urge key legislators to sponsor the ??New Jersey Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Act!?

Each year thousands of New Jerseyans are diagnosed with cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis and other life threatening illnesses. The symptoms and suffering caused by these illnesses can be devastating. Fortunately, doctors have an array of medicines and treatments to help ease this suffering and improve quality of life. But for some patients, currently available medicines do not offer relief. For these patients, medical marijuana may offer hope for relief from terrible symptoms such as pain, nausea, muscle spasms, loss of appetite and wasting. Compassion and common sense dictate that doctors be allowed to recommend, and patients be allowed to access, the medicine best able to relieve suffering and improve quality of life. For this reason, contact your legislators and ask them to support S119 / A804.

Medical Marijuana Closer in New Jersey

Dear Supporter,

Your faxes, emails and calls are working! I am pleased to report that our medical marijuana legislation has gained three new sponsors in the Senate, in addition to recent new sponsors in the Assembly, bringing us closer to becoming the 13th state to legalize medical marijuana. Sen. Sandra B. Cunningham, Sen. Raymond J. Lesniak, and Sen. Jim Whelan (who sits on the Health Committee, where the bill will initially be heard), have all signed on. With Sen. Nicholas P. Scutari as the prime sponsor in the Senate, these new additions make for a total of four sponsors in the Senate and seven in the Assembly!

As we build on this momentum, it is important to urge your local representatives and the members of the Assembly and Senate health committees to commit to the compassionate, common sense response to suffering by sponsoring A804 / S119. The more sponsors we have on this legislation, the better chance we have of making medical marijuana a reality in New Jersey. If you haven't taken action yet, now is a great time.

If you did take action, thank you! You can have an even bigger impact by forwarding this message on to friends and family and asking them to take your lead.

When you take action, your message will automatically be sent to the two Assembly members and one Senator who represent the district where you reside, in addition to the members of the Assembly and Senate health committees that are key in moving this important legislation forward.

Thank you for all you do!

Sincerely,

Roseanne Scotti
