I was wondering what you guys do for a living? It seems that almost all decent jobs now days require drug testing and random drug testing, and I was curious what kind of jobs you fellow marijuana smokers have. It almost seems like if you want to have a good life and make a decent amount of money, you have to quite toking. What do you guys think, honestly.

I'm a full time student. I'm trying to become a teacher (majoring in History). But I'm also going to start taking Dental Assisting classes so I can make some extra cash ont he side. As most teachers start as subs and thats not always full time. It's nice to have something to fall back on.
So no drug tests for me.

I'm work in the restaurant industry. I like my job and have plans to open my own place, probably a diner, in the future.
Working with food has always been a haven for those that use illegal substances. There's kind of a ongoing joke that if food service started drug testing they would have no cooks left.

Off topic for the thread, but anyway...
Last week I visited a "Market Garden" or "Market Farm" --- basically a one- or two-acre farm that grows crops for local farmer's markets and local specialty restaurants. The guy who is running it grows only heirloom varieties selected for exceptional flavor, not for high production or the ability to trasnport. He's committed to local food production. He's following organic practices but hasn't bothered getting certified because of the cost.
I was there with a group to see the composting operation, which is the key to his success. They make some big, hot piles! We helped them construct a pile that was roughly 5 or 6 feet on a side and at least 5 feet high. They rely on some amount of volunteer work and "work share" arrangements, so I will probably go back a few times in the summer for their Friday harvest parties, which they do before Saturday farmers' markets. You get paid in veggies. So, if this thread is about what you do for a living, I guess I'm one of those guys who will work for food. Ha ha!
So anyway, Stinky, if you set up your B&B, I will definitely come out for a weekend workshop. As a special gift to you, I will build you a "hot pile." And I'm thinking maybe you should try to set your place apart by offerring an upgrade to B&B&B --- Bed and Breakfast and Bongload.
Now, back to the thread. Up until about a year ago, I was a technical writer, doing mostly software documentation. Now I am an unemployed guy who posts on canncom, does projects around the house, does "house elf" duties such as laundry and grocery shopping and gardening, pursues interests, works for food, and attempts to decide what career to follow next. It's been a great year.

Emo you gotta tell me how to get THAT job. :)
In high school I was part of ROP, and did alot of work maintaining the school infrastructure and website. I was recruited by the local Geek Squad at 16, and worked there until I was 18. I got the majority of my certs while working there. They paid for my A+, Network+, Security+, and my first few MCPs.
After I got tired of working a retail-type job, I quit and got hired at Kaiser. I met some good contacts there, and also finished up my MCSE. I eventually got promoted up to a site lead, and started making pretty decent money. I liked my job, but it was alot of hours. The drive was killing me (over 300 miles a day), and so was the big-business red tape bullshit. I decided that if I stayed at that job, I would send my self to a stress-induced early grave. I gave my 2 weeks without even having another job lined up. I had some money saved up, and started collecting unemployment for about 4 weeks.
Shortly after I quit, I realized that the money was on the sales side, not technical. I took my contacts that I made at Kaiser, and took a job with this company. It was really tough at first. I was young, and had almost no experience on the sales side. Both of those were really working against me. Luckily, I have a really strong technical background, and that helped give me some credibility with clients. Its all about getting your name out there, making contacts, and building relationships.

i work full time at the moment, i work in retail, in a dog wash, its cool, i can make tips, and i really dont even have to wash dogs, i just have to clean up after other people wash their jobs, and my boss is atleast once was a confirmed toker, not sure about him anymore, but hes cool with it, the only problem is i think he can tell if i come in high. I got him and the assistant manager turned on to radiohead. I was a student last semester, but i took a semester off because i stopped going to class completely and i wasnt getting paid cause my boss thought i was in school, but i work 8 hour days, 5 days a week, and its not so bad, especially after getting paychecks.

RIGHT ON!!! I couldn't agree more. Drives me nuts to be a slave all for the sake of some 'money'...everyone wants the money. I wish we lived in a world where everyone could have a job doing something they loved. Society in general would be so much happier, imo. And there are far too many people who can't do what they enjoy because of some sort of restriction, and ignorant of the fact that this person would be so much more productive in that place than the inevitable one guy who's working there just cause he needs money. Sucks how we all just slave for cash...but we have to.
Sorry, hIgh ramble. lol.

12 hour work days, then another 2 or 3 hours of paperwork, *EVERY DAY*, then there is the 5 - 7 semester hours of continuing education and training every year to keep up with the ever changing technologies, and investing every extra penny back into the company.
To start a successful business today, you need a *MINIMUM* of $50,000 in start-up seed money, plus a years salary. I would also highly recommend some business courses at the local JC.
Good record keeping and book keeping is paramount. I get audited every 3 years whether I need it or not. Be able to track where every penny went (literally). Get a very good tax preparer, and put 30% of your gross profits in a seperate savings account so when it comes time to write those checks to the IRS, you *have* the money in the bank.
FWIW, it take a minimum of 5 years to make or break for a start-up company.
If you make it past the first year, you have done better than 90% of the other new start-up companies, if you make it to 5 years, your have pretty much beaten the odds, but.... the longer your company is in business, the more you have to work to *STAY* in business.
The best advice I can give is... *NEVER* be the low bidder, *NEVER* do "cheap", *ALWAYS* work to be the very best at your vocation.
Heard in the local grocery..."Mr Steve isn't cheap, but he is really really good"

Heard in the local grocery..."Mr Steve isn't cheap, but he is really really good"Yup. That's what I say about my mechanic. He charges more per hour than the dealership, but he's been wrenching VWs since God was a child and works much faster and more efficiently than the $10 per hour techs with the clean polo shirts :D
And he's got an almost cult-like following of loyal customers as a result.

in addition to my 9-5 i have my own business and i gotta say steve is pretty much dead-on.
i borrowed 20 grand extra to grow my already five years+ old business and it lasted a week.
one week and it was allllllll gone. truthfully it was gone before i even cashed the check. i don't think id try to start a biz today without at least a hundred grand. its rough out there!
owning your own business is GREAT and lots of fun, but it is 100x more work than just getting a job and working somewhere and forgetting about it when you go home at 5. being a business owner means you are at work every second you're awake and if you aren't, you're doing it wrong.

One day I want to patent something related to growing weed that can be used for growing other plants as well and make a fortune. I've got a basic idea right now, but patent law says once an idea is published in a magazine or public forum it is un-patentable. So... you'll have to wait for the infomercial. ;)
Right now I'm in law school full time. My fall-back is to become a patent attorney and represent large corporations as they sue each other over frivolous patent claims. Nothing is better for lawyers then rich people suing the pants off each other.
No drug testing at most law firms, from what I hear. Like the restaurant biz someone mentioned earlier... if they drug tested they would have to fire 75% of their work force.
I'm taking the "Patent Bar Exam" this summer. You don't have to be a lawyer to take it, it just certifies you to file patents on behalf of others. I figure then I'll be able to patent my own idea. I would just hire a lawyer to do it... but after my first year of law school I have decided that I trust lawyers about as far as I can throw 'em!

Any hints where I could start?I started with a BS in fisheries and wildlife conservation and a summer job at a hydroponic pesticide free commercial scale basil production facility. Then went to Alaska to work in the fishing industry. Keeping a balance between taking what you need and leaving enough to sustain the environment for another season is important, and working in the food production industry was eye-opening. I've also worked at several restaurants (back of house, with the exception of a 9 year part-time bar manager stint) and have the interest in food. Worked as a full-time bus boy for 7 months after High School.... HATED IT.. decided to be self employed. Now working as a logger doing small jobs that big companies don't do.
That TV show Axeman, I do that, but there is just 1 of me, instead of 6-8 on the work site.
I was very lucky my father knew how to run a company and take care of equipment. I wouldn't be doing this today if he didn't have the tractor, cat, saws that I use today(My father has started and sold both company's and now lives worry free)
There is nothing that I know of better than the sound of a 200-400 year old giant falling. I personally think that logging needs a new route in how we built our houses or general uses of wood, but for now, Im glad i am able to experience it cause in another 2 generations all they will be cutting down is tree farm trees the width of normal car tire.
Oh and I replant and don't clear cut. Also sell firewood on the side, and send semi rotted trees to be turned into sawdust(Which is more money than actual trees sometimes because of the current market being pretty terrible.)
and unban my other account, it was up @ 4/25

I think around here we would call that temp services- a lot of temp agencies staff factories, so that the factory managers can 'try out' employees before offering them benefits and a permanent position. If the temp worker does well, he will be asked to join the regular factory staff. Yankee Candle is a big employer in my area and that is how they get their help. Just stay away from Labor REady unless it's all you've got- if you have ANY type of experience, education, or training, a regular temp or staffing agency will be a better bet in terms of wages and eventual job placement, and they will occasionally even offer other incentives.
Lol... reap, sniffin around the 'attic'... :wtf:
Hydro... there's no more chips off this blockhead, but I'd say that the chicks I've gotten along with best are ones I've met in unusual types of fields- liek the greenhouse/nursery industry. It tends to attract chill, hardworking, laid-back stoner chicks who value friends and free time more than material things. Organic farms are a great place to meet awesome people... and it's that time of year! Farm labor ftw.

Full time student...part time lab technician, hmmm?, blackjack player, disabled Iraqi veteran!! Attending program for Associates in business management, plan to continue as far up as MBA, but basically I just plan to own a few businesses. Maybe a nursing home for starters, then a hotel somewhere up near the Washington-B.C. border. Maybe Mt. Vernon somewhere?

Student but also part-time relief farm-hand. Milking cows mostly, good fun and good pay per hour. Short hours which suits me and all the milk I could want..well not really but I drink about a pint a day (drinka-pinta-milka-day, any Hancock fans in the house, not the film btw) so it would be handy.
Would not do it medicated though, that would just be scary/really hard.
