Hey man, I read somewhere you had a 400 magnetic ballast? I'm trying to debate if a 400 is bright enough... I mean 1k right now I think is a little overkill for vege(mh) and flower(hps). Maybe 400 vege and 1k for flower type deal....
I swear I saw somewhere where you can get similar results in the end if you veg with 400 compared to a 1k, and then flower with a 1k. But that could be wrong.
how bright is that thing compared to a 1k? disappointing?

Damn dude, my bad! I usually only drop by certain forums, but rarely this one for some reason. :)
And yeah, I've got an older 400W magnetic ballast that I still use today. The difference between it and my digital 1000W system is like night/day... or, well, 'pretty damn bright' / 'damn near blinding'.
And doubling the light during flowering definitely improves the size and density of the buds. Before I got the 1k, I unfortunately only had one room to grow in. So I used the magnetic 400 for veg, and added another digital 600 system to flower, for a total of 1000 watts. The flowers definitely grew larger and were much more dense, some were rock hard. Now I'm lucky enough to be able to veg and flower in two separate spots. One room that's only lit by the 400, and a separate room with the 1k to flower. (Sold the 600) I'm definitely favoring this setup. Hell, if I'm not using the 400 to veg anything the next time I flower, I'll throw it in to the mix and have the ladies sitting under 1,400 watts of air-cooled blinding goodness.
Take care, chief!

This is exactly what I was thinking man, just seemed overkill using a 1k if a 400 would work good if not better. Two rooms always make things a lot easier.
Thanks man and no worries, I skip around sometimes

Definitely, man. I mean, don't get me wrong, if you have the space, the need, and the means to cool a 1k in the veg room, it'll definitely grow large plants... but I'm having no problems with the setup you described, and actually prefer it that way to keep my energy costs down. It's very efficient, and the plants love it.
Glad I could lend some reassurance, bro!
