BOGOTA, Colombia: President Alvaro Uribe said Tuesday that his government would ask the International Criminal Court to try Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez for financing and supporting Colombia's main rebel group.

The Uribe government claims documents found in the laptop of a slain commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia indicate Chavez's government recently gave US$300 million (â?¬197 milliion) to the group known as the FARC.

The United States and the European Union classify the FARC as an international terrorist organization.

"Colombia is proposing that the International Criminal Court charge Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, for the support and financing of genocide," Uribe told journalists after meeting with an ex-congresswoman who was recently freed by the FARC after more than six years as a hostage.

Uribe did not explain what arguments against Chavez would be presented to the Netherlands-based court.

The Colombian government says documents found in the laptop of Raul Reyes, a senior FARC leader killed Saturday in a raid on a guerrilla camp just inside Ecuador, show Chavez's ties with the rebels date back more than a decade.

The documents indicate, Colombia alleges, that the FARC even sent Chavez money when he was in jail from 1992-94 for leading a failed coup.

Venezuela says Colombia is lying about the documents.

Colombian VP says FARC rebels were trying to make dirty bomb

Colombia's vice president has told the main world disarmament body in Geneva that police have found computer evidence indicating the FARC movement has been trying to get radioactive material to build dirty bombs.

Francisco Santos said Colombian police found the evidence in two computers discovered with slain rebel leader Raul Reyes.

Santos said the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia were apparently negotiating for radioactive material. He described the radioactive material as the primary basis for generating crude weapons of mass destruction and terrorism.

Colombia has already disclosed that it found documents suggesting the rebels have bought and sold uranium.

Maybe now, Chavez can actually justify his paranoia over black helicopters and stealth assassins. After all the time he's spent worrying about it, he'll probably actually feel better knowing that he has a legitimate reason to be paranoid. Interesting story, thanks for sharing, P4B.

Why do these dictators misbehave when they know they have oil? If you don't have oil, you can do whatever the hell you want, but if you have oil, you better not give us an excuse to invade your ass. Probably the worst thing that could happen to North Korea right now would be for them to discover they have oil.
