This is my first shot at this so basically I'm stepping into a new area. I have experience with growing fungus so I dont think this can be a great deal harder, as with anything it just comes with its own new set of challenges.. Anyhow I just took some pics but it says at this time I cannot upload them I guess? or perhaps I will have to upload to another site but I'm just looking for some general advice and such.. Been trying to determine sex for a couple weeks now to no avail.. Not sure if its just not time yet or what but I will have pics very soon, I am not sure of the exact age of the plants, they were started from seed my best guess is that the seeds were started around jan 1st give or take a week.. if anyone has advice about uploading pics lemme know.. I'll see what I can do..

If you tried uploading pictures from your computer while you were writing your post and it failed, then I think you'll need 50 posts or so to be given certain privileges. I may be wrong, but I think that's how it works.

As for your fungi background, you shouldn't mention that too much around here. This board is solely supportive of medical marijuana and its patients, and the talk of any other drug use/manufacture is frowned upon by the mods. Not trying to be an ass, just thought you should know.

Take care.

Yeah, you wont be able to upload pictures until you reach a certain post limit.

Use photobucket or image shack to host the pics.

Mmm... shiitake's are delicious. I love adding them to miso soup in place of wakame, since wakame is so difficult to find where I live. But, for some reason, shiitake mushrooms are abundant at the Whole Foods grocer near my house. Come to think of it, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense...

Anyway, my mistake for jumping to conclusions. And your plants are looking nice and healthy. Have they been sexed yet?

No but actually thats kinda what I'm in need of because of my total lack of knowledge.. I feel like it should be very soon though.. I am needing to figure it out because I'm sure I have too many for my light at this time but once I determine sex I will be able to hopefully get rid of a couple/few.. Any advice on pre-flowers or determining sex or what have you I'm all ears, also if you have links and feel like posting them I'm all about reading up for sure.. I tried the search function but really did not find alot of great results, I will keep searching though..

Preflowers show up as lil lumps where new branches come out of the main stalk (or thats generally the first place they show up). How long have your plants been in flowering? Unfortnately I cant see anything from the pics, the resolution is just not good enough.

Grow Marijuana FAQ, Cannabis cultivation - marijuana growing tips & photos (http://www.drugs-forum.com/growfaq/1037.htm) This is a good resource to determine if yo have male or female plants. You should start seeing these about a week or so into 12/12, usually males first then females. The strains I grow it always seems that I see males about 4 weeks into veg, and females at 1 week into 12/12. which is kind of crazy.

Hey chief, here are a few good links for you to check out:

Sexing/preflowers (http://cannabis.com/growing/sexing-what-are-preflowers.html)
Sexing/identifying preflowers (http://cannabis.com/growing/sexing-how-can-i-identify-a-female-by-seeing-its-pre-flowers.html)
Sexing/male preflowers (http://cannabis.com/growing/sexing-what-does-an-emerging-male-preflower-look-like.html)

I like to take clones from each plant, and then flower those after they've been rooted. This way, I'm not having to stress plants that may still be slightly immature by switching the light cycle on all of them... then having to revert back to vegging later. There's another link for that under the Sexing area in the FAQs (http://cannabis.com/growing/index.html).

These are not flowering.. sorry if I misused a term when I said pre-flower(s) we are currently under 18/6 I honestly dont have an accurate time frame of how long they have actually been in the veg stage as they were started from seeds and I'm a complete noob so I'm pretty sure I am not flowering but I was hoping to be able to determine sex before starting flowering, I know even afterwards they can become male but I'm just looking for a way to tell for now.. Also any advice on getting rid of growth that could take energy from the plant? I dont wanna chop off the wrong shit so any advice there is also appriciated..

Older growth is actually what your plant will be relying on for energy, especially during the later stages of flowering, so try not to prune any more than is absolutely necessary. A better alternative, in my opinion, is LST. You're a bit too far into your grow to make a good 90 degree angle bend to the main stem, but you can easily tie strings to keep the bud sites separated and in direct light.

Sometimes preflowers won't show for quite a while, where others strains will begin to show as soon as they're mature enough to do so. If you want to force sex, you may think about trying the cloning method I mentioned earlier. If you do this, I'd recommend taking two cuttings from each plant... that way if one dies, you'll still have a backup.

Or, you could just go ahead and flower them. These plants can easily triple in size during flowering, so if space is going to be an issue, that's something you'll want to keep in mind.

If they were planted in the first part of Jan then you should be ready for flowering. If you have alternating nodes on your branching, (which it looks like you do) you could switch them to 12/12 at any time. That is how the flowering cycle is activated, when you roll back the clocks. :)

Unfortunately its pretty difficult for experiecend growers to identify and determine with 100% accuracy different sexes before flowering. Id say put that baby in flowering and in a week you'll know what can be tossed!

As for trimming.. some growers swear by it, others dont. I don't like to stress my plant any more than necessary, but I do trim off clones from the lower branches.

I believe I'm looking around the correct area for determining sex but not sure.. I'm not saying you will be able to determine sex on these its prb too early but these images are the same as some of the last just bigger (enlarged to show detail)
