since mother plants don't ever grow blooms or flowers, do they still have a very potent smell?

Other than a faint green plant smell, I don't think they smell much. It could depend on the strain, but most plants don't smell until a few weeks into flowering

It depends a lot on the strain, and also how big you allow your mother to grow. I had a mother plant that I kept in my master closet for a while, and while it was just a few feet tall it wasn't any issue. Once it grew for a few months and got bushy as hell, I started noticing that the clothes I was keeping on the other side of the closet began taking on a pretty distinctive smell! Certainly not as bad as a flowering plant, but noticeable nonetheless. Again, I think it also heavily dependent on the strain.

The mother I was keeping in my closet was White Widow. I was so used to going in that closet and smelling it every morning that I really didn't even notice what it was making my clothes smell like. Even when wearing cologne, it just smelled like I was trying to cover something up! A non-smoking acquaintance of mine pointed it out to me one day, said I smelled like I had been partying all weekend. When I realized what he was talking about, I just laughed.
