As you guys might know, ive recently started playing the bass guitar.. anyway, the band im in at the moment is only really doing covers, coz we werent even thinking about geting gigs and stuff, but now we've done 2 gigs (one yesterday, and one last thursday) and we've been offered a regular spot, every thursday night.. the deal is, we get the regular spot on thursday nights, and we have to try and 'introduce new talent' every thursday night.. basically, we find any new singers, musicians, bands, whatever, that havent had any gigs, or at least not many, that are looking for somewhere to play.. we let them do half an hour or an hours set, and then if it goes shite, we'll do the rest of the set, or let them carry on, whatever.. oh and we get paid for it, too.. lol... anyway, since we werent ever thinkin about doing many gigs, we've only really learnt covers, and a couple of our own songs that our guitarist and our singer wrote.. so ive been trying to write my own stuff, but theres a problem.. i never played guitar, and ive only just started playing the bass.. so i dont really know much technical stuff about music, like what chords work well together, etc.. i mean, i know a few scales, like major, minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor, pentatonic, blah blah blah, but thats as far as it goes.. so basically, ive got shit shit shit shit SHIT loads of lyrics (writing is my thing, so i find it really easy to come up with lyrics.. i just wrote a some lyrics for a song in like 10 minutes and it blew all my friends away) but i dont have any music to go with it.. i mean, thats what our two guitarists are for, but id like to write the music for a couple of songs, too.. not just the lyrics.. so, any advice? lol

How about you play pretty much the same tune over and over again with different lyrics? Then you'd only have to make one. Oh wait, Creed tried that and they suck. Never mind.

i play 6 string..but i dont know about bass chords if there is any.just make your own tabs. once you play a good lick, write it down(so you remeber) and modify it.take a piece of paper and write E A D G(is that the letters for bass?) and the #fret you play ....etc etc.My buddy has a bass and a 15 and i love jammin on it when im wasted.

dont worry so much about the 'songwriting' part, get your lyrics down, and the next part isnt playing stuff till u "make up something cool",( or at least for the band im in 6 months of that resulted nothing) the next step after lyrics is to read the lyrics and figure out how you or the person who wrote it wants the song to sound , like the "flow" i guess u could call it. its a billion times easier to do a song like this than the play something till it works. and when u do make up something really cool just fuckin around on bass or guitar write it down, and when your figuring out how the lyrics u wrote want to sound pull em out and see if any of them fit good, ill try and help a fellow jammer out, and remember this is 'my opinion' it might not work for you
