View Full Version : Plants Growing Sideways?

I wasnt sure if i should put this in techniques or problems cause its sort of both, i have 4 northern lights growing in a cab...they are still fairly small especially for day 37, they didnt like my original soil and it stunted their growth for a long while till i realized there was a problem (1st time grower)

anyways, 3/4 plants are good, there is only 1 plant that is not sitting directly under a light due to space issue in the cab...that plant is obviously growing towards the closest light at about a 45 degree angle, and im wondering if its a problem....i know that there is a technique used to train your plants to grow on thier side to maximize growth or whatever, but i wasnt sure when i should start training them...i wish i had a picture to show you how small this plant actually is...to give you an idea, i only just transplanted them into their big pots last friday

should I be rotating the plants daily to make sure they equally get directly under a light to help keep this one growing straight? should i try tieing it to a stick? or should i just let it grow crooked? I would much rather have 3 healthy plants than to risk messing up my 3 good ones to save the crooked one....any advice would be great

and since im on the subject i may as well ask about that technique, cause i had planned on using it, however its only a 15X30 space and might not be needed...but if i get 2 or 3 turn male on me then im going to want to know when and the best way to train the females...thanks again as always, WeedNeedy

Let it grow until it has 4 or 5 nodes, then train it however you like.
Here are a few suggestions...

Hi WeedNeedy

I am growing a strain of NL, I started in a short cabinet so I wanted them to grow sideways. I since then rebuilt my cabinet to 7ft and don't have that worry. I used a 450w MH for veg and had to keep them low they had only 4ft of head room. I just took some stiff wire and put a hook on one end, then stuck it into soil and pulled branches down to where I wanted them. I didn't move my plants around a lot, but it might be a good idea.

Here are some shots of my trained NL, none are above 2ft.
Most of the wires have been removed now that I have a lot of head room, but you can still see a few in place.

Training them to stay low is pretty easy.

Wow Dreadscale, gorgeous girl ....if any one of my plants turn out half as good as that i would consider myself lucky....as for the crooked plant, i tied it to a stake to keep it going straight, and also bought those electrical sockets that you screw in and it splits into two light sockets, this solved the problem of them growing crooked cause now they're all underneath a light, and it also increased the lumens (obviously)...I started my babies on 12/12 2 days ago, hoping to have them at least done flowering so that i can smoke my first bowl on 4:20 ...I'll post a picture on how they're doing as soon as i get my camera back...its been killing me not having it since starting this grow

on the socond node it will always have sidways growing. You can train them to do loops. I have made plants do 3 loops, as a joke.
ON earth plants want there roots pointing to earth center. The branches will point to the light. Now on Mars, check with local growers there.
IF the light hits the ground it will not grow ground, but if the light hits the plant it grows , so bend to fit the grow area. Use chlose pins to weigh the leafs /stems over , use panty hose strips to bend stalks over with out breaking them. NEVER use string or wire , it cuts off the flow on the stem.

I use wire and it doesn't cut off anything. Just don't wrap it tight around a branch.

I use wire and string :) Well, paper clips and yarn... the paper clip makes such a perfect lil hook and the yarn is so springy.. never had any real problems with flow being cut off.
I even did my latest lsting yet using this method (3rd week of flowering, damn thing outgrew my light) and she seems to be fine. No stress points where the wire is, no dips or hurt spots in any way.

Lol olds, ive never done that but that would be a blast to have a completely curly plant. Not sure what that would do for yield... :)

Weedneedy, just keep pullin her down and lsting so she can get the light!
